Help on buying a 1992 Z28 25th Anniv. Camaro

Ok so im looking to go buy this Z28 ASAP..I just need to sell my car first.
But before I do anything I have a few questions.
Well basically, is it worth it? I went to check it out and it runs perfect, nice smooth ride, interior needs a little tlc but idc about all that, as long as the thing runs.
It has a "new" 350 TPI with around 10,000 miles on it.
Starts right up and the 3" flowmasters sound AMAZING.
Mileage on the body is unknown, the dash says like 5x,xxx?
And also, the speedometer only goes up to 110, I thought the Z28s went to 140?
It has a B&M ratchet shifter which is actually pretty hard (for me at least) to get into gear. I guess that just takes some getting used to?
The body is basically perfect, heres some pics.
Let me know what yas all think? Thanks Alot
Hes asking $3500 OBO

Re: Help on buying a 1992 Z28 Camaro

Personally if it was me I would check the vin number and make sure the 8th number is an 8 to verify that it was a 350 car. The speedo going to 110 doesnt sound right for a 350 car.

I mean even still, its been swapped over to a 350 TPI with just around 10k miles..Im not bothered by the speedo or anything I was just curious. I checked all I could on the car, it seems solid. Im just checking with the Camaro pros on here first haha. Since my last Camaro (4th gen) went on me within the first 5 months

the 110 speedo almost makes me think that car was originally an rs turned into a z28.

Re: Help on buying a 1992 Z28 25th Anniv. Camaro

If the speedo goes up to 110 it had a 305 initially but it could still be a Z28.
There were 3 different Z28 models: http://www.thirdgen.org/1992-chevy-camaro

Just check to make sure he didn't do a hack job when swapping in the 350 and just the other basic stuff. Might want to check Vin just to be sure.

Re: Help on buying a 1992 Z28 25th Anniv. Camaro

What do you mean your 4th gen went on you in the first 5 months? Im just curious what you meant by that?

Also I only posted that about the 350 with the 8th number cause I thought you was curious about the car being legit. It does look like a nice car though overall. I just recently purchased an 88 Iroc, and it was the same way NEEDED TLC IN THE WORST OF WAYS!!! I actually just put some 4th gen leather Firebird seats in it last night and MAN did it make the interior look so much nicer. My factory driver seat was a pile of junk, but the passenger and rears were just fine but I couldnt stand it. If you want to replace seats just keep your eyes out for some nice 4th gens, they bolt right in without messing with anything.

Re: Help on buying a 1992 Z28 25th Anniv. Camaro

I'm pretty sure it was originally a 305 TBI that's been swapped - it has RS wheels, the 110 speedo, etc. And you need to verify that the wiring and such from the swap hasn't been hacked. It looks good though, so it's probably been done well - but "probably" doesn't make it run in 6 months!

And in my book, $3500 is too much - what's KBB value on it? $3500 (to me) sounds like trying to recoup some of the mod money spent - and we all know we can't recoup that - if that were the case - my 1992 RS is for sale at $13k!

But take my words with a grain of salt - I'm tight - I paid $800 for my 1992 RS - and overall, it was in great shape - but my goal was to buy one that NEEDED the work done, so I could do the work, because I wanted a hobby! But definitely check the VIN, pay $14 for the Carfax report and check it for mileage, and check the KBB blue book value at KBB.com.

You NEED to know the body mileage - it might need $1200 in suspension work, it may have a salvage title, it could be rusted through the floorboards. Did you take the rear plastics out and look at the metal? Take the door sills off and look under the carpet? Put it on a lift and look underneath? For that much money, to me - it needs to be pristine! Because I can get a convertible in really nice shape for that as well, and I've always loved the verts!

Re: Help on buying a 1992 Z28 25th Anniv. Camaro

Well to answer the question about my 4th gen, I bought it as my 1st car last December, by like May, the front seal went, the water pump went, and it was running like **** basically. I got the seal and water pump and belts and all done which ran me about $1200..and the car still ran shitty. So I bought a 1999 Eclipse and this is running fine but id like to go back to the muscle scene

And I forgot a few things. The car DOES have a reconstructed title, the owner said the front end was in an accident and he got it repaired, a whole new front end from repair, 350, 56mm Throttle Body, rebuilt auto trans, new rear, new flowmaster exhaust, ect.. He said all new suspension, brand new tires, I checked the car and I saw NO body rust. The body is EXTREMELY clean, its just the inside that looks like it needs a bit of working on. I drove it, it started right up, shifted smooth, getting it into gear was a bit hard because of the B&M shifter (idk if its common?) But yeah, cars awesome in my opinion. I just dont wanna get screwed over again ya know? OH and when starting it up I checked under the hood to check out the engine and it seems like theres nothing wrong. I listened for any weird noises, looked for anything odd, saw/heard nothing out of the usual. And how could I tell if he did a hack job with the wiring?

The KBB for a 1992 Camaro Z28 with a 350 TPI, and I just put 100,000 miles due to not knowing the body mileage, and it still came out to like $3000 something. I can probably get the car for $3000 or most likely less, so hows that sound?

2800 cash in hand. He's put that engine in no doubt. The front seats are 4th gens as well. Nothing looks too wrong with that car, definetly look underneath though, paying attention do the rear bumper impact bar, those rot out pretty bad. Take a look at the rear axle area paying attention to how much rust scale has built up. Gives you an indication of what to expect when / if you ever start modifying suspension and underbody parts

If it were a salvage car and you were looking to keep it for later on, I would just pass on it. There are many other cars with non salvage titles that are In good shape for this price. You just have to keep looking.

Re: Help on buying a 1992 Z28 25th Anniv. Camaro

I'm amazed at the misinformation here. Appearance wise EVERYTHING is correct to a z28. Check the 8th digit of the vin, it will tell you if its a 350 or 305 car. If it is indeed a 350 car, the cluster has definitely been swapped, probably to "lower" the mileage. If its a 305 car it may in fact have the true mileage displayed, may. One more thing to consider, it might not even have a 350 swapped in. I personally think its a good buy but I would haggle the price down a bit.

Also I just noticed, they didn't put the fog lights on correctly.

I for one am curious what misinformation here amazes you???? The owner has TOLD him he put another 350 in.
Other than that, I agree the appearance externally looks good for a 91-92 Z28. Interior still doesn't agree. Those AREN'T 3rd gen seats.

Re: Help on buying a 1992 Z28 25th Anniv. Camaro

well yeah of course I wouldn't go and offer the guy the full $3500...the highest i would offer would be $3000 if that, id definitely try for like $2500 though. And im not really worried about the speedo or seats of anything, I was just being curious. I really dont mind, ill still never got that vin, ill have to give him another call tomorrow and see whats up.
But I mean, as long as the 350 swap is good, and everything else is fine with the car, I should be good right? The front end of the car was in an accident and he said because the value of the car was so low, they were just gonna total the car out, but he just payed and got it repaired, thats why it has the reconstructed title.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. People in this thread are stating that the car is bogus because it has the 110 speedometer and "rs wheels". You're right, those are not the original seats.

I don't think we are saying the car is "bogus" - I think we're trying to give the kid some "technical bs" with which to debate a good deal for himself. Knowledge is power - nothing wrong with empowering the boy.

With the few exceptions of some of these riced out ebay 3rd gens that no one on TGO seems to like, in my book there's nothing bogus about any 3rd gen - they're all good - just not all worth $3500, and anytime info can be passed along to help a fellow 3rd genner, especially for a "buyer beware" interest, it's good info.

I wouldn't go with any car with the word "deer" in its sales description... haha

But on a serious note, it looks like that car needs some decent body work... The hood and front cover damage is obviously due to the deer but wth is going on with that rear bumper??

Well the guy with the rs isnt really budging too much on the price and he said the right headlight is just sitting in there due to the damage...at least the z28 doesnt need any body work..i have an offer finally for my car, the guy is coming tomorrow to check it out so im praying it gets sold. Ill probably go check out the Z28 once more to be sure before I make any move.
Is there anything in particular I should be looking at? Im definately gonna check the vin while im there and see if its an original 350.

bring a measuring tape to check if the frame is bent on the z28. Measure fomr a given point under the hood to see if they are off.
