speedometer needle jumps by 5 mph back and forth!!!!! - Third Generation F-Body Message Boards

1983 z28 camaro.
i have a factory gauge cluster with a 165 mph speedometer. as soon as the needle leaves zero it rises like it should but it bounces up and down with a range of about 5mph. what could it be and how do i fix it?

Probably got a sticking speedo cable. You can probably just pull it out and lube it up as long as the sleeve isn't kinked, burned, or otherwise damaged.

I didn't read JamesC's link, but I had the same problem with mine. I removed the whole cable and lubed it Graphite lube.

No problems since. cost a few bucks.

The 85 mph cluster in my sport coupe had the same problem I replaced the speedo cable but still did it. Turned out it was the actual speedo head itself. It's probably just the cable but the head might be bad as well.
