Led gauge questions

Hey guys I'm witching out the 194 bulbs with red leds(5 points). I have the cluster off and there are 17 bulbs, which ones do I replace. And I want to replace the green turn signals with purple(pretty sick I know). Now I was thinking I could take out that green translucent disc and just put in a purple led. The only ones i could find were UV/blacklight ones, is that purple or not?

And I wanted to paint the metal part of the gauge behind the clear plastic a metallic silver paint. what you guys think>

Re: Led gauge questions

You should . There are alot of threads like this here.

http://www.thirdgen.org/leddash

The UV/blacklight ones are purple but I think they are not so bright.

I changed all 11 bulbs to blue LEDs but it was quite dim. Painted the back of the metal thing white and it's perfect for me now. I was thinking of the turn signal bulbs too but I thought they wouldn't work cause the LEDs use so low power. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Led gauge questions

Thanks for the link, I basically got all that, but instead I am using 194 mini wedges(5 leds in one), they are a direct fit. I am confused about what to paint white(in my case silver). In that link he says he painted the back of the front piece, but then you said the metal piece( I'm assuming the metal piece that is black in the front and blue in the back???

Thanks
Chris

Re: Led gauge questions

I used 194 mini wedges too, they had 1 diode per bulb though.
Yes, the metal thing that is black in front and blue in the back.

Yes, that black piece. Here's the one I painted red to match the car. The back side was painted silver, but I've since painted it flat white.

Re: Led gauge questions

Would you say the white works better than a metallic silver would?

Re: Led gauge questions

The only difference i think there would be with a chrome/metallic color would be the arrays of light shining vs white is more of a flood light type, such as metallic too but like i said it'll give arrays.

Re: Led gauge questions

Here's what I did back in 2002 (so long ago I had to go looking for it):

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/bo...r-cluster.html (Color and Cluster)

BTW, even with high intensity 194's, the difference from OE was considerable. As a side note, I can't believe how much the interior of my car has changed since those pics were taken. A newer pic in my Car Details below.

Re: Led gauge questions

Hey guys,

I did something similar with my 84 TA and I wanted to paint the back of my gauges white because as of now they are orange and they reflecting my blue LED's and making a mixed orange-blue. but my problem is i could not get the metal part of the gauge off on the speedometer so being my young impatient self i thought the needle came of by pushing in and sliding. Well i really should have asked on of you first because i basically sheered the needle off at the connection so does anyone have any solutions like a fix for that or a new speedometer anything would be much appreciated!!

Re: Led gauge questions

JamesC, What kind of paint did you use for the silver. Was it a metallic rattle can, or actual automotive paint, thanks
