Reverse Glow Gauges: Hard to see the needles

Hey guys/gals,

I have installed a set of Auto-concept Z reverse glow gauge overlay's in my 87 IROC and of course with all of the normal bulbs taken out (to get the maximum effect of the reverse glow) I find it hard to see my needles.

Has anyone found a solution to this small problem? I know I can put all of my white 194 bulbs back into the cluster but that sort of washes out the reverse glow effect.

I was thinking about getting a couple of UV Blacklights (194 wedge types) and some Blacklight UV paint ...install the blacklights in the cluster, either in the stock locations or maybe somehow remote mounting them so they shine down on the gauge faces to illuminate the needles.

And ideas?

Painting needles adds unwanted weight to them. They typically will not read correctly after painting them.

Re: Reverse Glow Gauges: Hard to see the needles

Thanks for the replies... I have already painted my needles red with a light coat of Testor model paint and have no bad effects (my speedo cable gets sluggish after about 1 hour of continuous driving, could be the cable or maybe the gear in the transmission..will find out later this year)..

My question is ... has anyone installed these Autoconcept-Z reverse glow on an older 3rd gen (ie: not the newer 90-92 cluster with the backlit needles) and solved the issue of not be able to see the needles very well at night?

Re: Reverse Glow Gauges: Hard to see the needles

I always wanted to try a phosphorous paint and add small black lights in there somewhere, similar to what I believe the c5 vettes had going on. I just painted my needles red and use indiglo gauges. After going back and forth between those and reverse glows, I opted for the indiglo because of the needle issue. Never did use the reverse glow set I bought
