articulated GTA headrests

The GTA had an option for "aticulated headrests".

I have a friend who is trying to make his 92 GTA convertible back to original.

Were they offered as an option in '92?

I am re upholstering them for him, but do not want to waste my time if they were not original to the car.

Re: articulated GTA headrests

Not an option. They were STANDARD equipment on all GTAs & those seats were not available on any other Firebird or on any Camaro.

From what I've read on these boards the Ultima seats could be ordered with Formula's and TA's too I believe. I just have never seen a car with them. But someone provided documentation showing that a non-GTA could be ordered with them. Its on these boards somewhere.

Actually there never was a '92 GTA Convertible or for that matter there was never a GTA convertible, at least not a factory one, now it was possible to buy a hardtop and ship it to ASC to do the convertible conversion. I know this did happen before 1990 but I have never seen or heard of someone doing this for a 91 or 92. The only reason I bring this up is it sounds like being original is important in this restoration so I would first check to see if it is a real GTA, if you have the spid label yet I believe Y84 is the code for GTA. There are a few that show up on ebay that I have seen people claiming to have a GTA convertible but they always turn out to be a regular Trans am. As far as the seats go I am pretty sure that they were also available on the regular Trans am too, but I have heard they were pretty rare, but I would assume they were probably more common on 91-92 trans ams since they were changing the seat style for the 4th gen and probably wanted to use up some of the 3rd gen style articulating seats.

If you are interested in finding out exactly what your car had when new and your spid label is missing you should try punching the VIN number into the compnine.com website, I have never used the website but I have heard they have good records for the 91-92 cars, that way you know exactly how to restore the car. Good luck and keep us up to date.

Re: articulated GTA headrests

Now I am more confused!

These seats were specific to GTA's, yet there were no GTA convert's that were factory, except in 89 TTA pace cars. This car has them and it is a red with tan top convert. It is not my car, I am just doin the upholstery for a friend. He is trying to get it as original as possible. He was not the first owner. I do not know if he has the RPO codes. I e-mailed him and have recieved no response.

here is an excerpt from the GTA source page:

"......Second - There is no such thing as a FACTORY 1991 or 1992 Trans Am GTA Convertible.* I have the factory Pontiac Firebird order sheets for 1987-1992, including the 1991-92 convertibles, and they clearly state "Convertible - Available Firebird, N/A Formula, Available Trans Am, N/A GTA". For anyone who disagrees, I will be happy to send copies of these forms for your verification.
I can relate to the latter dilemma personally; several years ago, I was offered a chance to buy a supposed 1992 GTA convertible. It was a beautiful black 5.0L/5-speed car with 40,000 original miles. The details were so "dead-on" that it was scary and I even again e-mailed PMD just to be sure about its authenticity. Needless to say, the owner was quite upset when I told him the truth, as he had bought the car as an authentic GTA.... for GTA money.
The kicker is that all 1991 and 1992 T/A convertibles with Beige tops came standard with the 16" gold GTA rims, so all that one would supposedly have to do is to go down to your local Pontiac dealer and buy three badges.... and PRESTO! So be very careful if you see one of these cars; the person trying to sell it to you may or may not be aware of what the "real deal" is, but don't fall prey to this little game. It can be the timeless old game of "bait-and-switch" at its best....
* There are GTA convertibles in the world, and they are rea; GTAs. But the 1989 ASC convertibles were the only ones to be considered “factory”, as they both had an RPO code and a drop ship code to have the cars sent to ASC for conversion after production. All others were converted after production by selling dealers or by owners. But there are cars out there that are real GTAs; when dealing with the possible purchase of one of these, it is best to again go by the
Y84 GTA code for authenticity. ......."

Well first off I know it's not your car but there's nothing to be ashamed of by having a Trans am even if it's not a GTA. Also in 1992 this was the top of the line convertible that pontiac made. And Thank you for the clarification on the 1989 GTA convertibles.

This did get me thinking though and I skimmed through the gtasourcepage for 1992 here's the link http://www.gtasourcepage.com/92optionspriceinfo.html but from looking at this (and again I just skimmed through it) I didn't see anything that came on the GTA that you couldn't get on the Trans am (except the badges obviously), but if I remember correctly the taillights are pretty special for the GTA but from what I see on this page they are the same as the regular trans am. But most importantly if you go down to the Trans am convertible section there it says that power articulating buckets were an option and with another radio they cost $680. So the seats probably are original and if you get the spid sheet AQ9 is the RPO code. If you get the VIN you can run it through compnine to find out for sure.AfghjQ9AQ9
