What is the purpose of the flood lamp on on the underside of the dash pad?
I owned my car for about 7-8 years before I even knew this little useless light was under the dash pad, until the clip became brittle and broke and it popped out and hung down out of the dash by the wire. The light is extremely, extremely dim.

Yes that has always been my understanding too, the reason I'm posting here is, did they move this light to the rear view mirror at some point? My 92 Camaro has a very dim light that shines strait down from the rear view mirror and I have no light under the dash that I have seen, the only reason I ever noticed it is I put my hand under the mirror one time and remembered someone posting something like this and just figured that's what it was. As far as I can see it's a pretty useless light since I believe the HVAC controls are backlit (at least they are in my 92) and I'm sure the auto gearshift indicator is also backlit (mine is a 5 speed so obviously nothing is backlit there) it is interesting though that they thought of that even though it really didn't do much although maybe in earlier cars it did.
