Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to

The interior pieces in my 84 are originally the light blue color as the rest of the interior. It has faded/chipped away since then. From the end of the hatch glass to the end of the car is good condition, but the rest is crumbling away in this fine sandy type stuff. I was told to do almost this same thing in this tutorial, but sand it down with real fine sandpaper to smooth out the scratches in it and get rid of the sand stuff coming off. Would that work?

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to

When it becomes sandy like that from drying out, it is really hard to get it sand smooth. You could also lose the texture of the plastic that is on the good parts you have, depending on how "deep" the sandy/brittleness. You might be better off if you were to pick up some cheap replacement panels (can be almost any color) from the for sale section.

Sticky???????

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to

Bringing back an old thread - I called Baps to order some paint and they told me they needed a code from GM for the color. None of the codes on my cowl tag for the interior worked. He suggested I bring in a piece to match. That's a little inconvenient as I live in NYC. How did you get the interior color code for your car, or did you bring in the piece to match?

Guys! don't use any sprays for plastic interior!
I got my Firebird with factory gray trim, being painted black by previous owner. It was scratched everywhere and i couldn't move black paint off. I used even gasoline but there was no result...
So I used 6 square meters of carpet to cover all the interior, except door panels and front panel.
This is such a carpet as is used to cover subwoofer boxes. You can find it in car audio stores. It stratches perfect, so is very easy to work with. I used rubber glue to stick it to plastic.
Here some pics.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to

If it is done right, it will hold up fine. I painted an armrest with SEM 6 years ago, and it has held up great on my daily driver that I abuse the heck out of. It's all in the prep. If you don't prep the plastic properly the paint will peel and scratch off.

Do you have a RPO code sheet in your console?

I got my paint from BAPS and it came out beautiful,it's really all in the prep you do,got to be clean first of all and you have to use a paint adhesive,if you don't your wasting your time and money.

No SPID on early models. I have a tag under the hood. The interior code is 18E for charcoal black with Recaro seats. The only paint codes are for the exterior.

Maybe you can look up the rpo code for charcoal black, their has to be a code.If your keeping it the same color that's even better when you paint it.I painted carmine red on carmine red.

The guy was asking me for a paint code. I thought 18E would be the code he needed. What did you give him when you ordered your paint?

Check your codes again,I looked up the codes for 82 and the only ones showing for trim are 18 R,C,D,if you can give me all the codes I'll try and match them up with your trim combinations.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to

If you check the attachment, 18E is for charcoal Recaro interior. I think the letter denotes the trim inside, because it looks like the 18D is for the PMD seats. It lists 18E9 for the Recaro interior. But my tag underhood only has it listed as 18E. I wonder if 18 is the interior paint code color?

The Recaros are Parella cloth. If you look at the last seat option, it lists it as 18E9.

What was the color code you used for your interior? Was it a number, or letters, or both?

That's similar to my code. 72 must be Carmine Red, and the C is the type of seats you have.. Maybe I talked to the wrong guy. Do you remember who you spoke to over there?

So the way I see it is,if your seats are cloth you order 18ED.If your seats are vinyl you order 18R.

I just spoke to the right guy, and he was able to get me the paint! If you guys call the York PA store, talk to Dennis. He seems to know his stuff. All he needed was the code 18. How many cans did you order? I got 3 off of him. Is that enough?

I'm sorry my trim is 72I,my seats are 72C,the C denotes cloth, the I denotes the trim,I don't think it matters much on the color of the trim or the cloth it's all 72.In your case it's all 18.

Great thread. After reading this though you guys are making me feel bad about ditching the carmine interior in my car. However it looks like I'll be painting my carmine plastic pieces black to go with some ebony 4th gen seats

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to

Great info ... thanks Hawk!

Here's a totally stupid question: can the same aerosol dye be used on the carpet as well as the plastic panel itself? The carpet on my pace car is in good shape, is just faded.

Also, I assume if the panels are really scratched and gouged, that the 1000 grit scuff won't really fix that and replacement panels are necessary.

SEM says their dye can be used on carpet, but the PPG stuff is only for plastic.

I haven't had a chance to paint the panels yet. Hopefully this week now that the holidays are over.

Got it. Thanks. I may give the SEM stuff a shot to see what kind of results I get.

Re: Restoring interior plastic and carpet how-to

I just did the sills today with the PPG paint. It is a good match, maybe 1/2 shade lighter. But considering that none of the plastics seem to match from the factory, it should look good once everything is the exact same shade. I will take a pic when the paint cures and the sheen evens out.
