Heads Up Display?
So before I joined the Army an bought my old 91 RS on the other side of the country, I had an 04 Corvette Z. Well I still have it, just.. on the other side of the country One of my favorite features was the Heads Up display that was pretty much a screen reflecting the RPM, Speed, and either oil, temp, fuel, or several other options of your choice onto the windshield in view of the road, so that you never had to look at the cluster for safety reasons. I'm curious how all of this could be implemented, if anyone has done it, and any ideas pertaining to this. Our dashes have such a nice flat work space to build off of, I'm just itching to see it be done!

I have a old thread kicking around and had all the parts from a 91 cutlass and 88-93 grand prix. But never did it because I had a 4thgen dash. It will wire in easily in flat dash cars. You will just have to see if there is enough visibility with the unit installed. It is very easy otherwise.

Re: Heads Up Display?
The problem with a HUD is that you need special glass for it to display clearly. It is actually semi reflective. I have thought of doing the same thing and I think the best option would be to get a piece of Teleprompter glass (30% reflective) and set it up like you would find in a airplane HUD. I have also seen people that have put a small semi reflective sticker on the windshield were you want to aim the HUD.

Re: Heads Up Display?
I owned a 2001 GTP with a HUD. The windshield was exactly the same as a non-HUD car, except mine had a very minor tinted square where the HUD displays on the windshield. You would never notice it if you didnt know it was there.

Id even be willing to cut into the dash to seat a HUD. Thats how the vettes are. Good point on the reflective part.

Re: Heads Up Display?
Mounting it would be.the.simple part. Wiring would be more confusing (imo). I have a few hud's from newer and older gp s. Id be happy to donate one to the cause if someone wanted to figure it out

I have one sitting in my basement from a mid-90's Pontiac something that I pulled from a junkyard. Just haven't gotten around to wiring it up.

Re: Heads Up Display?
You'll need to connect +12V ignition feed, ground, tach, and your VSS. The tach wire is a white wire connected to you gauge cluster. The VSS wire varies on color and PIN number throughout the years. It can be tapped into behind the gauge cluster as well. You'll have to check the wiring diagrams for your car. If you've got an earlier cable-style speedo, you'll need some type of adapter or buffer box to create the electrical pulse signal used by the HUD.

Re: Heads Up Display?
I know there have been a couple of threads on this topic, and this particular one is a year old. But I thought those interested in adding a HUD unit to their car might want to see this article from a service industry publication I get. A system to keep an eye open for in the future.
Add-on heads-up display unit scheduled to enter aftermarket arena
http://www.searchautoparts.com/after...orta?cid=95879
The only thing that article does not define is if an OBDII feed is needed.

Re: Heads Up Display?
I seem to remember someone doing a project with the GTP heads up display or something. I'm fairly sure it was on these boards, the poster had pictures of the mock-ups and how it was going to be wired into the car.
I can't find the thread, but I do remember reading about it.

Re: Heads Up Display?
I do a little data logging to help with tuning. There's an app for Android devices called ALDLdroid. I use it so I can log the computer data with my phone instead of a laptop. It has a HUD feature, where it displays everything in reverse. You just put your phone/device up on the dash and you have an instant HUD. You need an ALDL cable to go along with this, or the bluetooth adapter, but it works. You can customize the display to show anything you want.
However, our winshields are laminated glass. There is a reflection from the surface of both pieces of glass. The end effect is multiple images. Something will have to be added to the windscreen to prevent this effect.

I tried exactly what jichniow is talking about. There are very noticeable reflected images. It looked pretty bad.
