Heads up Display (HUD) in a 3rd gen.
I am going to be installing a heads up display in my 87 iroc. Just some background info on my car it is LS1 swapped along with a 4th gen dash.
The HUD came out of my dad's 96 grand prix he decided to junk. He called me asking if there was anything I wanted before the junk man came to get it and I was like HELL YES THE HUD, so I drove to his house and went to picking lol.
I grabbed the whole dash, dash pad, HUD unit, controls, wiring, and even the info center.
I'm going to use the dash for the mounting area for the HUD and fit that part into my dash. Just have to figure out where the controls and info center are going to go and look good.
After I dig up some pinouts and wiring diagrams I'll be on to fitting this stuff into my car and post the process here. Anyway here's the pics of what I have.
Edit: Fixed those pesky image links.

Re: Heads up Display (HUD) in a 3rd gen.
Just a small update, felt like doing something quick and easy as a start.
I cut the mounting tray for the HUD unit out of the Grand Prix dash as a start point. Here are some pics just for reference. I'm going to try to make use out of the dash pad if I can.
Cut in the GP dash
The tray out
The dash pad
HUD unit in the dash tray
I know phone pics are not the best ever but its what I got lol.

This sounds like an interesting project. My understanding is that the windshields used in cars with heads up displays have a special coating for the display to show up. Have you figured out a way to deal with that?

Well I dug up some wiring info off some w-body sites. Still looking for diagrams/pinout pics but this is a start. Splicing it into my 4th gen wiring looks like it may be kinda easy.

The display shows up just fine on the glass. The special film some HUD cars use is a polarizing filter so bright sun doesn't wash it out.

Re: Heads up Display (HUD) in a 3rd gen.
Messed around with it yesterday. Turns out the HUD unit is entirely too large to simply mount it under my dash pad. I have 2 options: Either extensively cut a hole in my dash to mount it or take apart the HUD unit, remove the mirror box and just use the computer and display parts that are A LOT smaller by themselves. The problem with not using the mirrors is that one of them moves the image up and down and makes the image larger. The display is rather small so I would have to find a way to expand the image or just have it be small. I'm not a big fan of chopping up my dash though. We'll see what I come up with.
Maybe stick something like this above it. http://www.seeitbigger.com/collectio...er-bausch-lomb
I'll have to pull my dash out to see how I'm going to go about mounting it.

This is why I'm following this. I see lots of interesting interior mid ideas on this forum, but I think until you gave actually taken the dash apart on these cars you can't understand how little space there is. They don't have a glove box for a reason.
Please let us know if you are able to compact thus unit enough.

Re: Heads up Display (HUD) in a 3rd gen.
Well I took the HUD unit apart, I now fully understand how it works as far as the display unit orientation, mirror reflections, and height adjuster motor.
The large mirror has 3 functions: Expand the image, adjust height, and widen field of view (due to being curved). The small mirror simply flips the image to the large mirror. Removing 1 mirror will cause the image to be upside down or backwards. No mirror will cause the image to be 100% static and a bit small.
I'm considering using the adjustment motor directly on the display unit to keep height adjustment (it attaches to the large mirror) and cutting up the case to re-fit the parts used, possibly cutting down and reusing the mirrors. I have a 4th gen firebird dash sitting around that I plan on using for mockup purposes so we'll see what I come up with.
Pic's of the disassembled HUD unit:
The display screen.
Mirror and motor in the case.
Control board.
Motor and mirrors

I was going to install one from a 90 Grand Prix Turbo in my 89 GTA convertible, but then I realized I really don't care what speed Im going in that car...always above 55

I'll tell you guys this. It's not as easy as I thought it was going to be. I'm still trying to find time to work on it but I'm so tied up with work these days it's hard to find time, but I'll get there.

Re: Heads up Display (HUD) in a 3rd gen.
It would have been easier to buy an aftermarket HUD and start from there.

Re: Heads up Display (HUD) in a 3rd gen.
I took one from an 03 GP I believe, looks the same as the one in the pic.
Given all the other crazy stuff I ended up doing to my car (Keyless entry, S10 Overhead console w/homelink) I had to look into this.
With the third gen dash, there's a 0% chance you get it in without losing something stock. I've determined I could fit the circuit board and plug it into the pigtail through the left side speaker. However you lose the motors and I might be only able to get one mirror to project. A custom rig would need to be made in addition to cutting the speaker cover in the dash pad out.
Other option to retain the HUD functions would be to drop the driver side speaker AND HVAC vent. It would also require removal of a bracket holding the main dash to the car. Would still be stable but it's gonna take some work for a MAYBE, in addition if it doesn't work then the dash was hacked all for not.
Debating if I'm gonna go ahead with it or just get one that mounts on top of the dash.

Re: Heads up Display (HUD) in a 3rd gen.
I've been looking onine for one that just sits on the dash and uses gps for the speedo display but have not been to happy with my findings. Either crazy over priced or terrible reviews. The speedo in my car ( my wife's car, hence the screen name) is way off due to a gear swap, and until I do cutom gauges I'm trying to figure out a cheap solution. The decent looking HUD's all require a obd II port to get the speedo reading from, well that aint gonna work for a third gen.
