I bought the hedman shorties for 135.00 and the y pipe for 95.00. Ordered from summit, jegs is back order on the y pipe for about 3 weeks. I also to summit that jegs has 1-2 day shipping for free, they were going to charge me 30 something to ship.

The best headers are the Hedman 68479 for the painted and 66479 for the coated. These headers have the d-ports and also will clear the angle plugs as well. They have a matching y-pipe that fits like a glove. You will have to buy O2 bungs and have them welded in either the headers or the y-pipe though.

just go to summitracing.com and search for 68479 or 66479. Hedman makes a long-tube d port header too.
If you don't get ceramic coated then buy header wrap and put it on. Header wrap is probably more effective anyway but i'm no expert on that. Definitely cheaper.

I think some people spray that 2000 degree spary paint on them and it seals the header wrap better to prevent rust. I don't know if thats total BS or not.
The old HS mechanics teacher always said if you don't coat em, them wrap em.
Stainless steel headers(SLP?) with ceramic coating with header wrap would be the ultimate.

would the hooker headers for the 94-96 impala ss fit? i was talking to the counter guy @ the speedshop out here and they said i have to run the impala headers to keep it smog legal.

Hedman 68481 (painted $359.95 at Summit) or 66481 (coated $618.99 at Summit) smog legal in all 50 states. Shorty header with y-pipe from what the website looks like. Will fit angle plug heads as well. Best fitting header I have found for the LT1's going into a 3rd gen car.

Hedman makes a d-port longtube header too, I think. Hooker longtube super comps will bolt up, they are 1 3/4". Search around on summitracing.com or jegs.com. Any thirdgen (82-92) header with 1 5/8" primary minimum made for a 350, shortie or longtube will work but as Klortho said, the Hedman shorty d-port header with its ypipe fits the best.

Plus he's in California as well and those shorties are the only ones that Hedman show that are 50 state legal.
And 1 3/4 are a waste on these motors anyway, the 1 5/8 to 3" primaries are just fine and I know alot of guys putting down a ton of HP though that size header.

why didnt anyone mention dyno dons headers? Seems like they would flow better being that they are 1 3/4. i would think 1 5/8 would be fine for a long tube but i would rather have the 1 3/4 on a shorty.
Also I noticed 66481 headmans are oval port and that wont work on a d port head. I just sold a set of headmans for 50$ for that very reason.

The correct part number for the d-port angle plug headers are 68479. 1-3/4" headers are over kill for these engines since the ports on the heads are 1-5/8, you would have to hog out the exhaust ports just to keep the step down from happening which does something to the exhaust and kills performance, can't exaxtly remember what it is, but I read it somewhere on here about it.
He was needing smog headers, and the 66481 were the only ones that Hedman had listed with smog provisions.

It creates turbulance. In theory, its so close to the head the gas is still expanding so it shouldnt much matter. do you have a coated number for non emission d port?

Sorry to intrude, will Edelbrock TES shorty 1 5/8 headers from an L98/LB9 engine work on the LT1 from the Vette and Camaro's?

Re: lt1 swap headers needed
Will they bolt to the engine, yes. will they work, no. Its not something you want to buy to use on this swap since it doesn't cover the ports correctly. I tried a set and they leaked like crazy.

Thats funny, i've used them twice on two different swaps and neither leaked, nor were the ports off enough that it would come close to leaking, maybe you had a warped set, the difference on the ports was around 3/32nd of an inch.

the size now is dual 2.5inch - single 4inch - dual 3inch out spintech muffer..
As for the edelbrock TES, it worked fine for me with no leaks, but kills the power above 330 or so rwhp.

Re: lt1 swap headers needed
For my longtubes I got a drews xmember (skulte makes one too), a flowmaster Y collector, and then took it all to the exhaust shop to have them weld it all up to my mufflex 4inch catback.. the ground clearance now is just as good as my shorties used to be..

Re: lt1 swap headers needed
Here are some pics. The first shot is looking forward you can see the longtube collector tucked up nicely..excuse the slave cylinder I am in the process of machining down the mounting plate. The second is from the side of the crossmemember, as you can see the lowest point is the crossmember itself.
To get the exhaust in I still had to notch the a-arm mount and lift up the passenger side of the engine.

No, it is around ten degrees in my garage right now. I just ran out and snapped them. In a few days I will heat it back up when I put the slave cylinder back on and take a few more then.. any specific section you want me to focus on?

Re: lt1 swap headers needed
As long as they are 1 5/8 D port. The exhaust on the lt1 is 1 5/8 d port shaped. you will need at least 1 5/8 D port or 1 3/4. I recommend 1 3/4, since they don't even make 1 5/8th headers for lt1 F body's to begin with. Dyno Don makes some excellent headers for the swap.
