Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Made some good progress and got the IROC all together.

I mounted the fuse and relay for the intercooler pump on the passenger front side wall... this made it relatively close to the pump. The relay triggers on with the ignition. The rest of the wiring was pretty straight forward i will post some updated schematics

Using HP Tuners I made an initial tune file, it is essential to make sure the injector values are updated prior to initial start due to the large change. I also incorporated several ZR1 tables for idle spark correction, adaptive idle correction, etc. For the main spark table I adjusted the timining significantly lower than what i previously had to avoid getting knock.

The IROC fired up without trouble but had a lot of issues idling, and would immediately stall upon movement and letting off the throttle... note that i have only driven it in my driveway due to the weather

I made some further changes and ditched the ZR1 idle spark correction as my cam is significantly larger than the ZR1 and it was causing much of the issue... I also did some initial tuning of the airflow by adjusting the low range input of the MAF by logging long term fuel trim versus RPM between idle and 4000 RPM (again just in my driveway)... This made a big difference and the car now is fairly stable and i can drive back and forth without stalling

A lot more tuning work left to do, but at least it is alive!

I also need to decide if my single fan is going to cut it... i think i am going to upgrade to dual fans as with the additional restriction of the intercooler heatexchanger i probably need more capability in that area

Also got the hood bolted on, but it requires to be properly fitted

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

So today it is off to take the IROC for paint... They say 4-6 weeks, so hopefully by mid-May as i can't wait to see what i can get this thing to do

For paint I am going with Factory Black, Red IROC decals and bottom stripe.

I also got some custom "6.2 Liter H.O." decals made that go under the Z28 rocker badges.

I got all new sealing, emblems, etc for the shop to use. I am also upgrading to the stainless hawks t-top center piece

So as far as my performance goals-

I had 448 rwhp and 408 rwtq last year after the tune and dyno at Hutters on their Mustang Dyno

My plan is to take it back to Hutters for a similar session

A couple things I want to see-

- I want to retain an aggressive idle, but one that is still reliable

- I want to have this IROC have aggressive performance but still street drivable in traffic

- I want to stick with the basic stock look, (the hood a minor exception, but am hoping after paint this style blends in well)... So wheels I am using are IROC 16"... Now i do have 2 at weldcraft wheel right now having 1.5" added to them so i can use a larger back tire, but this will still be limiting even with a street drag radial

- I want to stay pump gas (93) and realizing that i did not change pistons or bottom end at this point take that into consideration, so on boost i am likely going to stick in the 6-10 psi range, balancing all the above

- For final rwhp and rwtq i would be disappointed if i didn't add 125 to each of the above, however depending on how we initially end up if just tipping over 600 rwhp looks achievable that is probably what i will adjust for

- Since i am able to adjust my own tuning with HP Tuners i can tolerate not having things perfect on idle, etc from the Hutters session so will probably push them on concentrating more on making the performance goal while we are on the dyno as i can work on cold start, etc myself

What do you think?

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

That is the best looking aftermarket hood for the 3rd gen Camaro, the "Sunoco" hood. Where did you get yours and how much? if you do not mind me asking. I know Hawks carries them.

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

There has been a lot of questions on radiator hoses, so here is what i use-

For the upper hose, i use two and splice together to get a good fit with no twist
- Dayco E71696
- Dayco B70704
- Pegasus Racing HI35 Aluminum Hose Joiner (35MM)
- Gates Power Grip 32941 to join securely

For the lower hose
- Dayco D71321 trim to fit
- I slide in a Pegasus Racing Alum Joiner inside the hose to around where the idler arm bolt is then shrink a Gates Power Grip over it to provide additional abrasion resistance

The attached pics show you the finished product.

A black IROC with a blown LS3, wow. I'd prefer a turbo, but with over 400 RWHP, who cares!

Awesome build.

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

So the car is now in for paint... hood is going to be the major work to get exactly correct.

I went with the new quik-latch type hood hold down to make sure it is going to stay down at speed... we are going to have these latches "embedded" in the hood so it stays pretty much flush with only the push button release exposed

http://www.q-latch.com/product2.html

car is pretty much in the strip down process... going down to bare metal... also all new glass

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

while the car is out for paint, i have been working on the interior...

bruce got these custom seat covers made for me, i think they are going to look great

the first pic is the original back, the second is the new seat covers, the third is the partial front driver seat... those hog rings are a little tough, especially as the drivers seat has a lot

I always dug that seat pattern that said Camaro. Hawks sells those new, I would buy them if they were not so dam expensive.

Those are the coolest looking seat covers I've ever seen, especially since the outer sections are leather/vinyl! My dad would die if he saw that, he'd want a set in the charcoal/grey for his car.

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

they have been making steady progress on my iroc...

all the parts have been completely stripped and first coat of primer epoxy was on last week... all the bumpers, spoiler, and body panels looked pretty neat stripped down to bare material... the car had a couple paint jobs on it so this was definitely the way to go

this week they will be working on getting the hood in good shape... the hood has a slight dip in the middle peak line from the original molding so they have to build that up as well as re-enforcing the underside to get it nice and stiff while flowing it around the magnason

oh and yes you can get the "CAMARO" with the gray/silver inserts i have a set of those and they look great as well

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

So they are working on the hood and should hopefully have that in good shape by the end of the week... i am getting anxious to get my IROC back so i can get going with the magna charger tuning, but it is going to be a little while yet.

In the mean time i have been working on other items... i have had my wheels widened to 16X9.5 in the back by weldcraft and just got them back from the refinisher today and they look great... i had them refinished by wheel collision in bath, pa

for tires i got 275/45/16 toyo drag radials for the back... i have toyo r888 for the front, although i am still thinking about the fronts

How kick *** are 16x9.5 's, There is a guy on here who goes by JerryWho who was supposed to take my 91' Z28 stock wheels and make them 17x9.5 and 17x11 for me, but now he does not answer my e-mails or phone calls and it really bums me out cause I was drooling over having those done, he has a set on his and it looks phenomenal!!
Please post pics of tires mounted on those 9.5's

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Progress being made slow but sure... the hood is starting to take shape... they have worked on getting the interior / exterior rear openings in place and working to complete the rest of the underneath portion of the hood...

probably will put in some type of mesh to finish off the rear exterior / interior opening

progress should start to pick up as the rest of the car has been basically waiting for the hood to get to a point that the rest of the work can begin to progress

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Looks löike you´re getting a good finish on the inside of the hood aswell, well woth it everytime you open the hood. Your ride is going to be supergreat. Mine is finally running now. But I only have 2" of ground clearance so I can´t drive it at all on these roads we have here in Sweden. I´m trying to bolt in my dads used Pontiac Grand Prix springs in up front right now....
So maybe yours will be painted and ready for reassembly in a week or so?

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Paint has been a slow process, but it is progressing

In the mean time i did get my tires mounted and took a look at how they will work out by seeing how they fit on my '88 Sport Coupe as it has the same axle spacing

Looks like with a 0.5" spacer the rears should work out, a 0.25" was kissing the bump stop, i will also probably try 3/8

Anyways i think they are going to work out good... first shot is a comparison of the 275 R16 on the 9.5" wide rim, vs the standard iroc 245 R16 on the 8" wide rim, vs the standard sport coupe 215 R15 on the 7" wide rim

the second shot is the 245's on top with the 275's on bottom

third shot is the baer spacers

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Here are a couple comparison shots on the car

First one is the standard 215 R15's

The second shows the 275 R16 on the driver side with the 215 R15 on the passenger for a comparison

Good thing i have long studs left on the IROC as with the standard axle i only have a couple of threads once the spacer is on, just enough to hang on for the photos

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

I haven't been able to spend much time lately with the painter due to work, luckily my good friend Rich has been able to be giving them some direction and checking up on them... a couple quick pics of paint process update he took yesterday while i was out of town...

Also gives you an idea of how we are sinking the hood latches down into the hood

They noticed and then measured that the front driver wheel position is ~5/8" further to the rear than the passenger driver... As the k member bolts up without adjustment not sure what is causing that... after i get the car back i will have to investigate what is off... may make a custom a-arm to get it exactly right we are thinking

What size tires are those 275/ /16 on the 9.5 inch wheels, and are you planning to run 9.5's in the front too? Also, I always have to comment on the Sunoco hood again cause it's such a bad *** hood, the only aftermarket hood in my opinion that looks good on a 3rd gen. Also, taking everything apart like your doing for the paint is the only way to get a good job on a 3rd. Please do not put some gay rear spoiler on it at the end. So far all of your choices have been tasteful and correct, no homofoils please, LOL.... What color are you going w/ by the way?

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Thanks for the feedback, i really like that hood as well as the lines of the hood match the car real well... I am sticking with the standard rear spoiler as i prefer the stock look to keep it nice and clean.

I am going with Black, not sure if i will do the IROC door decals and any bottom stripe or just stick with solid black... car might be painted by end of next week, so we will have to decide soon.

I am just using the standard 16X8 in the front with a standard 245 width wheel.

The place that widened the wheels for me was Weldcraft Wheels. He did a very nice job

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

I was just thinking about your front wheel not being positioned correctly. How are your bushings in the A arms? It might also be that some previous owner had a minor accident and that the arm is slightly bent. You could try to find used ones to measure things up before to start fabbing things up.
It´s gonna be one nice ride once the coat of paint is on for sure :-)

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Some good update news-

We weren't happy in the end with the way the hood was completely turning out so decided to make a course change with it that is going to be awesome in my opinion.

We were having trouble getting the crown on the hood perfect and after thinking about what we were going to put into it still, why not just really go crazy and make some more radical changes...

So what we ended up doing is cutting the middle up and grafting in pockets that now mount the original IROC louvers... not only has this added some nice structure, but i think it looks really awesome

Here is a couple pics from Thursday with it in its final stages... hopefully should be finished and in paint by mid next week to join the finishing up with the rest of the car

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Here are a couple pics i took this morning of the IROC after paint last night...

The hood still needs to be painted but making good progress.

The team working on the bodywork and paint for me is a company called Bonnell's here in the Erie area

There lead guy Phil is a really creative guy and perfectionist... He is doing a great job and the work on the hood as you can see in the post above is really amazing i think...

Anyways they are going to be working on flattening out the paint next week to give it a great shine and we should be moving to get it together here shortly...

Then lets get that magnacharger fired up!

The Sunoco Hood you got for that car is hands down the best looking hood on the market. I am a little apprehensive about those IROC louvers grafted into the hood though!!! I hope I'm wrong and it looks cool!!. Keep on truckin, it's coming along great, and when it's done I will be sending you offers to buy it!!!! LOL............... After you have a little fun first, after all, you busted your ***** building that rig!!!

Ok, we are getting down to the end of the line on paint so we can get back to seeing what this thing is going to do with its new blower... Looks like i will probably have it back at the end of next week.

Here are some additional shots of the hood... i think it really is turning out nice... it still needs buffed and the louvers haven't been sprayed new flat yet, but it gives you a good idea... i really like the way he was able to make the contour of the hood around the louvers match the factory hood curves

the rest of the car was in the process of re-assembly, so a couple more days and hopefully it is home

progress should start to pick up as the rest of the car has been basically waiting for the hood to get to a point that the rest of the work can begin to progress
is that the sunoco style hood? also good luck with your build, the more lsx camaro's the better!!!

That Hood looks great, once you paint those louvers with some black trim paint, it should look great!!!

yes it started off as a sunoco hood from hawks and has been heavily modified top and bottom to get the IROC louvers mounted, hood hold down end latches and underside finishing

thanks guys for the comments, i really now want to get it back so we can get some performance numbers on the blower add!

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Got my IROC back last saturday, it looks awesome...

Here are some quick pics, working on getting the interior back together and tuning for the tvs

I have it running pretty well for tuning on just a couple of runs, but i have very conservative timing at this point... the LS3 only comes with a 1 bar map sensor so wasn't sure how much boost, just got a ZR1 sensor that will be installing soon...

Will be taking to the dyno later this month

im surprised how well your hood fits the lines of the car. especially how it flows from the front bumper.

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

I spent most of the weekend working to get the interior back together... Attached are a couple of pics, i really like it and in person it really looks sharp in my opinion

Also i will get some more info up to share shortly, but i am working on getting the tune in good shape so i can dyno later this month, a couple of notes

- The base MAP sensor runs out of scale as it is only a 1 bar so i replaced it with a ZR1 MAP sensor with changes to the tune for the new scaling... with it i can read now up to 3 bar and with the present 3.2 pulley on the tvs2300 i am making ~5.5 pounds of boost... at this level it feels very responsive

- With the boost i am at, i am coming close to the air flow reading limit of the ECM as i am pushing into the 510 g/s area, with the max scale being 512... this means any more and i really need to either scale the whole tune for fuel and air or i am looking at a newer version of the GM OS as with the ZR1 gm raised this limit to 4000 g/s

- The dual fans from Be Cool i installed work real good so far compared to the single stock fan i was using.

I will get some more pics, etc but anyways a quick update

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Looking great, Alan. Going to have to see the car in person soon. I considered widening my 91 Trans Am wheels, but had not heard of a good place to perform the work and refinishing. We'll have to discuss to see if I'm further ahead with Year One billet snowflake wheels or putting money into the originals. My taste in general is more original, but those billet snowflakes with deep rear lip and gold accents are so attractive (but on a 3rd gen?).

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Thanks guys for the comments, mike i think your project is going to be real interesting that we discussed

Here are a couple shots of the new Be Cool dual fans, they are really working well keeping my water temp inline as well as keeping low IATs with that big heat exchanger for the supercharger i put in front of the radiator

A couple of other things i have done such as changing out the plugs to NGK TR6 with a 0.026" gap per Hutter's recommendation. We have a dyno tune scheduled with them for thursday.

I also smoothed out my spark advance table today giving it a little more up top... right now it feels like a real strong performer, we will see what the dyno says. I also have two smaller pulleys just in case

Re: LS3 Engine Swap

Had a good day at Hutter Performance yesterday on the dyno... Did about 5 hours of tuning and dyno runs with Trevor getting the virtual VE configured as well as all the other parameters.

We stuck with the 3.2" pulley for now at just over 5 lbs of boost as i am maxing out my airflow sensor limit in the GMPP OS and don't want to do scaling as i am working to upgrade to a OS without this limitation.

So we made 566 rwhp in the end with the 5 lbs of boost. That is up from my 448 rwhp last year

My numbers over the past couple of years all at the same facility with the same dyno are

2009 LS3 Crate with GM Hot Cam - 389 rwhp / 370 rwtq
2010 Add ported heads and Texas Speed Cam - 448 rwhp / 408 rwtq
2011 Add TVS2300 at 5 lbs of boost - 566 rwhp / 489 rwtq

So still some room to grow over 600 rwhp if i desire, but it is already pretty stout driver!

With 566 rwhp, it should be no problem to pull mid-low 10's with a third gen making that kind of power with some good drag radials like some ET-streets. After looking at your car painted and with that awesome sunoco hood, I think you should reconsider your wheel choice, the stock IROC wheels just dont do the car justice, plus your making way to much power for that size wheel/tire combo, I would get some 94-95 black 5 spoke ZR-1 17x11's on the rear w/ 315/35/17 tires and 17x9.5 in front w/ 275/40/17's In the 17x11 size, GM made two offsets, one for the ZR-1 and one for the 1996 Grand Sports, there are replicas you can buy, but they dont look right and are built different, I can tell the difference by the depth of hole where the lug nuts mount, the replicas have equal depth on both the 11's and the 9.5's
Just my $.02,

yes it was quite a lot of work... they basically had to cut the center of the hood apart and re-work it to accept the louvers... i wanted it to match the same lines as the original IROC hood so they used that as the guide... it has a lot of detail in it to get it right... The hood had more overall cost in it than the rest of the body work and paint on the entire car by the time we were done!

mike, i appreciate your comments and suggestions... i have thought about the wheels and continue to think about them. i have considered the exact ones you are referencing... not sure yet, but it will give me something to consider over the winter
