Is a VSS signal really necessary?

Hey everyone I would like to know if the VSS signal is really necessary with my application. I am swapping my 95 LT1 with a T-5 behind it(please refrain T5 sucks comments,I found one with trans, master cylinder, shifter and boot and virtually everything to go with it for 250,so I'm just gonna go with it).Anyways... I'm using the stock ECU and engine wiring harness. The donor car I got the LT1 out of was a manual(T56 was already sold) and I would just like to know how the ECU will react to not having a VSS signal. The reason I ask is due to the fact that the tranny I have is cable driven, along with my autometer speedo.

thanks for your help -Cameron

Re: Is a VSS signal really necessary?

I dont think it would matter as u are 5 speed and cable driven for ur speedo. As long as the computer is tuned for a manual I cant see an issue. An auto needs it to shift (when I rewired my car I hooked it up and plugged my speedo in wrong and the car wouldnt come outta first lol. All i did was pull the speedo out and switch the wires around and bam it shifted lol.

Even a T5 ECM looks for a VSS signal. If it doesn't see one, it'll set off the CEL.

Not sure what tuning changes happen, if any, when the VSS signal is missing.

Re: Is a VSS signal really necessary?

I wonder if it would be worth it to just get the VSS programmed out of my ECU along with the VATS?Because I would like to have a properly functioning check engine light...

Its very easy for a tuner to disable the trouble codes for VSS and VATS. I have the tunercat program and its nothing more than un-selecting a few checkboxes. If you are going to pay a tuner to do only that then it probably isn't worth it but if you pay someone to do that and get a performance tune yielding approximately a 10hp gain then it would be worth it. If you have a PCM from an automatic car, the trouble codes for the auto tranny will have to be disabled as well. Also, other trouble codes like traction control, etc, etc. Look into madtuner.com

Another option is to build an interface cable, buy a program, and program it out yourself. Would need a soldering iron, solder, and good soldering/computer skills. Kind of explained it more in this link: http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/lt...-question.html (94' LT1 vats question)
