i bought a gto cai(points to left) for my ls1 swap. my question is do you relocate the horns or cut a hole where the evap canister used to be? does it really matter? let me know what fellow swappers have done, thanks
Well what does the kit dictate? Does it place the filter over in the battery tray area? Or does it require the filter to go behind the fender of the GTO?
A lot of guys just leave the filter over top of the battery tray (there is a battery tray on both sides of the car, some cars had the evap/battery switched). Other guys, myself included, cut a hole through the tray and mounted the filter under that. You will get cooler air if you isolate the filter from the engine bay. Even with the filter shoved over and forward as far as it'll go, you'll still pick up hot engine bay air. But the further away you get it, the better.
Can you post a picture of the kit you have? How about a picture of it attached the car so we can see how it sits?
But really, you are only limited to your imagination/creativity. You cant really go wrong...just some ways work a little better than others.

Ok. So that kit will put you right over by the battery tray area. So you could either just run it like that, or route it down under the tray. If you do that, you'll need an elbow and some more piping to get it down there. I recommend intakehoses.com for all your parts and clamps. They have a great selection, good pricing, and good shipping. Im not sure how big your filter is, but mine was the perfect length to go between the lower air deflector pieces and the underside of the tray. So I didnt even need anything fancy to hold it in place. You can check out my pics for some ideas...but basically just use your imagination to get the filter wherever you want it.
The only probably I see is depending how far over the MAF sensor is, it might make things tight for making the turn down to the batter tray. Its going to be a pain to modify the plastic tubing itself, you might be stuck with working off the end of whats there. So you might just have to run it as is. Ide have to see it on the car.

I can recommend going through the battery tray - I first did that on my car back around '98 or '99 & ran it that way for years without any problems. (Of course it's been a nice-weather cruiser for years, but still...)
I just drove mine about 45 miles in pouring rain yesterday. Both on slow backroads with puddles and on the highway going 70. No issues what so ever. Pretty protected under that tray, as everyone told me it would be.
My IATs stay super low, and it looks pretty clean without the big filter sitting there.
