Installed: 241's. Have:

317's. I understand they are basically 243's with bigger chambers.

Question: Would it be worth having the 317's shaved to the LS6 chamber size and installing them on the 2000 LS1? I already have an LS6 intake and Hawks/SSW long tubes, deleted A.I.R./EGR, etc.

At this time it's the stock cam. Would a cam upgrade be needed to make this worthwhile (assuming the 317's are fundamentally better than the 241's)?

You could mill the 317's down .030 and I think that would get you about 65cc (stock is 66 I believe). I would sell the 317's and get a set of 243 or 799. You could run them with the stock cam, but to really take advantage of them you should have a better cam. My .02's

IIRC the ports are the same between the 243 and the 317 but the chambers are different. Again iirc Patriot performance stage 2 CNC heads start with the 317 casting, weld up the combustion chamber to allow the nec meat to CNC the chamber into a more advantageous power producing shape. I didnt verify any of this Im going fully on memory here so... But long of the short of it the 317 has a great runner shape but Im not sure the chamber is better. If your not planning a cam swap I dont think I'd bother swapping them

if i wanted to upgrade heads i would sell the 317s and invest money into the 241s. have them ported and milled. how much milling is up to you as the cam choice (potential reliefs in piston) and desired compression is all on you.

just my 2 cents. yes the 317s are *basically big chamber 243s, but you can only mill so much off of them before you run into intake fitment problems (somewhere around 40 thou i believe). i think you could port and mill the 241s and end up ahead of the 317s.

Since I didn't accomplish my goal of getting the car running for the racing season this spring, I'm toying with the idea of a cam change while I (hopefully) get it running over the winter.

I'd definitely be tossing a cam into this motor over the winter, it really wakes these motors up. Something like a futral motorsports F13 cam would still exhibit daily driver type personality.
