Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

Yes it came out amazing. i was skeptical at first because i thought it would come out too high. But it was perfect how half the tips are below the bumper and half are into the bumper. Everything is loose right now so thats why it might look tilted some. I have to run through and torque everything down and get everything lined up how i want it.

Not too much left but just need to find the time to finish.

I actually need some opinions/help with the fuel system. I am running Aeromotives A1000 system and need to figure out where to mount the fuel regulator and the y-block. i dont want to mount anything to that nice firewall unless i absolutely have no choice. im trying to see if i can get as low as possible somewhere down by the frame rail. if anyone has pics of something clean looking please share! Thanks

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

y not run the fuel lines inside the front fender well and have the stainless lines come out and go to the engine? thats how the 4th gens do it but u could do it a lil more custom then how its done there

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

Yes! its been a while. The car is running with a couple issues. I broke in the engine just fine and went out for a 2-3 mi drive and everything was great.

I am not having problems with some black (i guess carbon) build up in the passenger side tail pipe with symptoms like no power and struggling/shaking when accelerating. I had separate exhaust pipes - headers and 3" all the way back to the rear. each side is completely separate from the other.

I've been reading online and it sounds like it could be a number of things causing this. I'll try to get some pics during the week when i am working on the car trying to figure this issue out.

One other issue is the spohn panhard bar is hitting the UMI panhard relocation bar (for the 3" exhaust). i guess cause the car is so low the bards touch and going over bumps they separate and come in contact hard and doesnt sound good. I may just need to get a custom bracket made so i can lower the panhard bar mount a little more.

Time to work the bugs out. hopfully its just the little things now.

Just curious why no X or h pipe to equalize / join the 3inch pipes?

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

The car is too low to fit an x-pipe. The spohn T56 crossmember is a HUGE pain for long tubes. I had the flanges on the cross member plasma cut so the long tubes would fit with the 3" exhaust pipes. The exhaust is like 2" off the ground... Nott good.

I don't have the blower in yet. I wanted to break in the motor and work out any issues right away before putting on the boost. I'll be getting a D1SC running 12lbs over the winter.

EVERYTHING is new or aftermarket so trying to figure out what to diagnose first and how to go about it.

awesome looking car good luck and THAT'S the way to go about it so you don't compound issues with a blower on it be chasing your tail in a circle

just wondering what drivetrain setup you have, i.e. what driveshaft that's supposedly hitting that safety loop??

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

Hey, lots of things have been happening since i last updated this post. 99% of my time as been consumed by me just getting married this past November. I am finally getting time to get back to the car again... after a year.

Anyways, the driveshaft i have is a custom driveshaft made by a local shop and it is much larger in dia. than the factory. I forget what it is now, but can get a measurement this saturday when i get the car in the air. It may be 3"? The driveshaft loop was hitting the end of the yoke at the transmission end of the driveshaft. I had a local shop cut the arm the loop was connected to and extend it further back a couple inches to clear the yoke.

The carbon build up has been due to the passenger O2 sensor not working... and thats 4 different sensors not working. i checked all the wiring and the continuity and it all looks good so no idea what is happening here. i got fed up and decided to change from the factory PCM to a new FAST XFI 2.0 system. this is what i plan to start installing this saturday.

Recently i turned the car on to move it and noticed a strong oil burning smell and a ticking noise i had heard before. the ticking was extremely fast and much louder than i remember before leaving the car in the garage for a while. i think it could be a loose rocker. I didnt notice an exhaust leak and it sounds like a unique metal to metal tick but im not 100% sure.

I hope once i get the FAST system in i can work out the last couple of bugs and can finally enjoy the car. i still have not driven the car except for taking it to the shop with the driveshaft loop issue and trying to figure out the O2 problem driving around the block a few times. very frustrating.

ALSO, my lexan windshield decided not to stick to the adhesive and come off about 70% around the entire windshield. i am looking into fastening the lexan in with nice flat head stainless steel screws. hoping to make this look good.

These things just never end i guess... Pics will be coming up soon.

Your engine cosmetic wise looks very similar to mine. Canton overflow/Valve covers, Trickflow Ceramic elbow, ebay intake, etc. Just you have a very nice paintjob.

Love the build. I can't wait to see this outside and get some good pictures taken.

I Love it, just pure ***** that your going with the lt1, i don't know your financial state but from the looks of it you could have afforded the ls1, but your looking to make a statement that the lt1 is still alive and going to take anything it comes across. Pure perfection.

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

Someguy,

Nice build. Some serious work in there.

As far as your ProCharger questions, I would run the SBC Gen 1 street rod bracket. The only thing you'll have to check would be the fore/aft spacing to the LT1 crank pulley. (also, we have a 12 rib ProCharger LT1 crank pulley, test fit only in stock, $80+ship)

Shawn at IndianaMuscleCar.com found this pic online (attached). (I dont know whos it is or any details, so if it is someone's engine on here, thanks for the use of the pic)

To dial the fore/aft spacing I would: Test fit bracket with ProCharger head unit and LT1 crank pulley. If the spacing on the ProCharger pulley is too far forward, take it to a machine shop (or we can do it) and mill the spacer. If it requires spacing forward, buy another spacer from ProCharger, mill the new spacer to whatever additional you need, and stack the spacers.

The Camaros are more forgiving with respect to hood clearance then the Firebirds, so that should work in your favor.

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

http://www.procharger.com/chevy.shtml

If you talk to ProCharger or BruteSpeed.com it is the small block carb bracket. Few examples in that link above.

Hope that helps,

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

Thanks for the help! i'll def take a look through this stuff and see wht i can make happen but probably wont be for a while.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone. Been a very LONG road working on this car and still going. I didnt get to pull the car out this weekend like i wanted to. i went straight into removing the entire stand alone harness and related wiring. I got the new Fast XFI wiring harness in. Very disappointed in how short all the connectors are from the firewall grommet. some of the connectors dont even reach the front of the motor. I extended the ones i needed and was just a waste of time but necessary.

There are A LOT of unknowns and it may just be that im no expert when it comes to wiring and electronics for engines.

Not sure how to wire in the Coil module, knock sensor, maf sensor (not sure if needed), distributor (MSD opti), or any of the T56 connectors.

will be spending some quality time on the phone with a tech rep i guess.

89rs454 - i wish i did got with an LS1 but when i first started the build i was on a tight budget and didnt plan to do nearly half the things i ended up doing. i came across a complete 383 lt1 build for less than 1500 so i jumped on it and went from there. lots of things changed and in the end i could have spend the money on a solid LS1. but live and learn i guess. I dont care to run on the drag strip or make 1300 hp or anything so im ok with what i have for now. will have some fun with the procharger on there and just enjoy the car on the weekends. Ultimate goal is to get in road racing with another thirdgen which is somewhat in progress in the background but wont have anything ground breaking happening for a while.

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

Update.

FAST XFI 2.0 is installed and the car runs! first try too after swapping over from the factory PCM/stand alone harness.

Incredibly easy to setup. I am scheduled to drop the car off at the shop this saturday morning for dyno tuning. I'll finally have some pictures of the car out of the garage for everyone and hope to put up some good numbers on the dyno.

Windshield will be redone probably with glass that is custom cut to fit, the plexiglass just isnt worth it anymore and i dont like the glare/reflections you get off of it.

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

Hey guys, thanks for following up!

No supercharger yet unfortunately. After getting the FAST XFI tuned at a shop i thought things were well and the car felt like it was running well, but I have never been in a car like this or driven something with a built motor so had no idea what to expect. Long story short, after doing my due diligence i was burning up plugs and did my own research and because the FAST system is so easy to access with a laptop and see what your computer is actually doing i found out that my tune was total garbage. it was WAY too rich throughout the entire RPM range and had huge jumps all over the VE table.

I did a lot of reading and researching and found some great peopel on the FAST forums who helped me get my tune in line. I got the VE table completely smoothed out the way it should be, no more burning up plugs and a MUCH smoother engine now. I cant believe the difference. Lesson learned - never trust any tuning shop. This place i went to came highly recommended too. They obviously had no clue what they were doing. I posted up the file on the XFI forum and everyone was amazed a how terrible this tune was. I was better off tuning it myself with no knowledge and following simple steps from the manual.

Anyways... had to vent a little. Now that the car is running pretty darn good. I havent had time to go down the path of the supercharger because of these issues and because of how busy i am at work. I have barely been driving actually.

Im hoping to get more research in over the next month or two and maybe start ordering some parts in the fall. It looks like this will become a winter project when the car is stored for the winter. Thats when work will slow down as well.

Sorry guys. But stayed tuned... I'll be posting as i get some more info on the procharger progress.

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

thanks for following up. I was getting geared up for the Supercharger this spring/summer but my T56 decided to act up. During an event right at the beginning of winter while pulling through gears on the highway, i found myself not being able to shift into 4th. No sounds, no grinding, no smells, no sign of anything going wrong. so i skip and go into 5th just fine. then try 6th... no luck. now im like WTF. so, i cruise in 5th for a bit trying to figure out if i should pull over or not. I make my way to the slow lane and now i cant get out of 5th!! now i am really screwed.

I didnt want to pull over because i have no way to get the car home. I am too low to get towed, no friends to help at this point. I choose to stick in 5th and head home, praying I dont hit traffic. I am only 2 lights away when i get off the highway. Cross my fingers and i get lucky with the lights and make it home.

I have the car in the garage now and have yet to diagnose the issue because of work and the weather. After searching online I found it could be broken keys in the transmission or a bent clutch fork. I checked with Tick Performance who built my transmission to a Stage 2+ and they believe it could be the shifter and a loose bolt that just fell down preventing the shifter from moving (BEST CASE and easiest fix).

I'll probably take a look in the coming weeks and if its something internal then im going to be on hold for a while because pulling the trans is going to be a huge job.

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

Awesome car. I had all sorts of problems with my Spohn k member and a arms. Coupled with his poor customer service I will never use anything from them again.

Re: 383 LT1 Supercharged Build

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been spending more time and money in my newer toy and less time on my Z. The transmission issue mentioned above was a very simple and stupid issue... one of the screws used as as stop for the shifter came loose and backed out so far that it prevented the shifter from moving at all. at first it wouldnt let me move the shifter down (gears 2, 4, 6) then it continued to back out while i drove in 5th until it hit the shifter and then i couldnt get it out of gear. Easy fix , thankfully. Had the car running in no time and its hasnt given me any issues since.

I took the car on a 4 hr drive to GM Nationals in Carlisle, PA. I was nervous about the long ride but got great gas mileage and no issues at all. I prepared well for the trip and made sure to bring lots of tools and repair stuff with me just in case but never needed anything. Now i am confident for any trip, anywhere. I also spent about 1 hr in traffic with no issues. Other than my leg going numb, i was good lol...

As far as the Spohn products... I could have had better fitment with the K-member but my car was involved in two wrecks before i owned it so i am not 100% convinced it was a product issue. One of the mounting holes was off by about 1/8" which was not bad but i had a shop help with this.

No progress on the supercharger. I've fine tuned the XFI 2.0 tune and now i am running with perfectly clean plugs which is great.

I bought a 2012 S4 a couple years ago and started to get more into modifying that and left the Z the way it is. I am actually trying to sell it now as I dont have much time to spend working on the Z and put on the supercharger. Looking for a good home to send it to but certainly in no rush. Just waiting for anyone who makes the right offer. Otherwise eventually i may get around to the Procharger, but with kids in the near future and working getting busier year after year, its just one of those things I have to unfortunately pass on.

I'll have it and maintain it (plugs, oil, etc.) and drive it a few times a year until its sold but I dont plan to spend significant money or time into it anymore, unlesssome extra cash comes my way for me to have a shop do the procharger work/tune for me.
