so i found a 2006 gto ls2 with a 6 speed that i would like to stick in my 91 camaro. i was wondering how similar this swap would be in camparrison to a ls1 swap. i know you can buy all sorts of parts for the ls1 swap to make it easier such as the plug and play but im not to sure if it'll be so easy with this motor. if you know much about these motors and how many hurdles they create when putting them into a 91 itd be nice to hear before i buy it. thank you

I is somewhat of a straightforward swap, but there still is a lot of work involved. I suggest searching. I am not sure if the GTO T56 is the same as an fbody trans. so you may or may not have a problem there.
as mentioned, you'll have all the hurdles you'd normally encounter with an LS1; accessories, oil pan, engine/trans mounts, wiring, and so on. LS1tech is great for info on the differences between the motors and what's needed to get it to work. More people on here are doing the swaps, so the LSX/LTX subforums getting more data on a daily basis. I know I'm reading everything I can for my LS1 swap

far as I know, the GTO uses a rear end mounted trans (kind of like a vette), don't hold me to this but... I don't think the tranny will do you any good in a thirdgen.

Wrong, they used a conventional longitudinal transmissions mounted directly to the rear of the engine. The biggest difference between GTO and Fbody is the lack of a torque arm mount on the tailshaft. GTOs were IRS so they didnt need the mount
Only Corvettes and XL-Rs used the front engine, rear transaxle on a LS platform. Anyways, there has been a swap using the C5 drivetrain into a 3rd gen so dont say its out yet. The owner had it at autofair but is not a member of this site otherwise Id post a link. I can link to the Civic hatchback using the C5 drivetrain. Another improbable swap that is well documented on LS1tech
From a wiring perspective the LS2 is very similar to the LS1. Some connectors were moved around/changed/added but the overall harness is pretty much the same. Modifications to the 3rd gen wiring will be identical to a LS1 swap
Use a Fbody or LS2/3 vette pan + related and the LS1 swap mounts will get the engine in. One extra would be the DBW pedal/wiring. That and DBC conversions are covered in depth on LS1tech
The GTO tranny is the standard T56 but with some internal upgrades; different gearing and a wacky shifter adapter. It is completely interchangable, you just need to do something.. exactly what escapes me currently.. to install the shifter plate.
For the shifter you need the shift plate and shifting block from an F-body T-56. When you take off the shifter plate you'll see the shifting block (I think it's also referred to as a bushing) it's what the shifter drops onto. It's attached by a roll pin. Just pop out the roll pin and you can pull it out. The blocks are different because the GTO T56 has some extra linkage to move the shifter back farther.
