LS1 T56 in my RX-7

I am new to the forums. I just picked up a 1991 Formula from a guy locally here in Indy. Its in the process of a 305 to 350 TBI swap. But I wanted to post up and show you all my 1995 Mazda RX-7 that I swapped a 2000LS1 and T56 into in 2007/2008. I got all the mounting parts from Hinson Super Cars in Alabama. The engine/trans are a complete pull out from a 2000 ws6 w/ 45k miles. I did all the work myself (aside from the exhaust I had a shop build that). The car runs great and is fun to drive.

http://www.venomspeedshop.com/RX7%20Build.htm

just a small introduction.

I had a 1988 Formula in high school so I couldnt pass up the 1991 formula I got on craigslist for a trade. I just have to finish bolting the engine in, attach the wiring harness, and put fluids in it and it will be on the road. Im going to repaint it shortly after that.

Nice car. Don't be upset if the mods close the thread though, because it's not 3rd gen related.

haha yeah I would love to do that too but $$$$ ive already got too much in the 7, I just want the formula to kick around in.

Bone stock LS1 (intake and exhaust) stock exhaust manifolds, Stock clutch. 12.40 @114mph 1.8s 60' It weighs 2830lbs with about 1/2 tank of gas, full interior and heavy *** wheels.

Re: LS1 T56 in my RX-7

great job on destroying the handling of the car by swapping in a heavy inefficient motor.

HAHAHA im just kidding, I absolutly LOVE your car, swapping in an ls1 is the best mod you can do to these, The look of the car is gorgeous! and the fact that it has over 300hp to the wheels and only weighs about 2700 isnt bad either! I really dont like rotary motors at all, and I hate it when the Rotards get pissy about ppl swapping out their beloved holy grail. they just cant handle the fact that the lsx motors are superior in almost every way.

anyway, sorry about the cruel joke, and hope I didnt get anyones blood boiling.

Im glad you like it! Thanks

The wight balance being changed from the rotary is a commen misconseption about this swap. the LS1/t56 combo is actually 50lbs lighter than the Twin Turbo Rotary Mess/5speed transmission. I have had my car on 4 wheel scales and it literally has perfect 50/50 weight distribution front and rear/left and right. Mazda fudged their numbers when saying that the weight balance was perfect... it was close but not perfect.

I bought the car without an engine in it. I have never had any interst in a rotary engine. I think they sound like crap (buddy has one). I have always been an F-body american V8 person at heart (1st sports car was an 88 formula, stepdad owns a 2000 ws6 TA). So when i had the opportunity to put one of my favorite engines ever into a tiny sharp looking car I couldnt focus on anything else. I am a member on RX7club and i dont tell anyone its swapped, people get all bent out of shape on there about putting a good engine in a car. I have a buddy that always tells me I stole the sole out of my car, haha. I always respond with "yeah, but it now has the Heart Beat of America".
It dosent really get much better than hearing that LS1 Fire up and looking at peoples reactions. You cant tell by looking at the outside of the car (or interior) that anything is done.

I get similar looks, ppl dont expect my third gen to sound like it does, but when that ls1 fires up, no cats, and a loudmouth exhaust ppl look. also im installing a radix magnacharger right now, so ppl are really going to look when they hear an odd whining noise

yeah I have stock manifolds going to 2 1/2 pipes that x then run back together into a dual inlet dual outlet muffler that baiscally has nothing in it. So you can definitely hear the V8 its not too loud though when on the highway so its not bad to drive. I am daily driving the car right now because my passat's timing belt broke.

My plans for the car are to put probably a Texas Speed Magic Stick 4 and supporting mods and maybe a 100-150 wet shot. Then down the road I want to build a 408ci stroker from the LQ4 truck block and run a Twin Turbo setup... but who knows if/when that will happen.

Re: LS1 T56 in my RX-7

I was looking on TheFormulaSource.com at their Galleries by year the other day and looked at the picture that is representing the 1988 category and its a picture I took of my car when I was in high school. i have no idea how it got here but its pretty cool. I had lost all my old pictures of that car so its nice to have one again!
