hey guys i got a 94 LT1 and I'm looking to drop it in my 91 3.1 Firebird I'm wondering would it bolt right up to the stock mounts or is their modification needed for the extra 2 cylinders? Do i need a new k-member i know i need stronger struts and shocks. the engine is out of a Impala SS. I just wanna get it in there without much frustration and confusion. i got lost with the resistance and the VAT and MAF please someone help my parents don't even know i got this engine lol I'm only 17 and I've done engine swaps before but i never put in a bigger engine before i only swapped out for the same motor

Re: Swaping LT1 1993

I have a 1990 Camaro RS with the dog 305 TBI with 237,8xx original miles on the engine and I'm going to be looking to drop an LT1 from a non-Police Chevy Caprice in my 3rd gen Camaro. So, obviously I have some questions/points for the knowledgable here.
  • I understand that the LT1 will directly work with the stock engine mounts.
  • Will the auto tranny from the Caprice fit my Camaro? Or do I need to grab a 4L60E from a 4th gen F-body--and will that fit.
  • Someone told me about the "reverse cooling" on the LT1 that needs to be re-engineered--anybody know of any guides how to do this?
  • I'm planning a custom dash+console with a completely custom instrument cluster--so that means I won't be using my stock instrument cluster from my Camaro. Is this a problem--or will that just make it easier in terms of the wiring.
  • Will I have to relocate the A/C compressor--or can I just add a "delete" pully?
  • What else will I have to relocate/fabricate/re-engineer on the LT1 for my 3rd gen?

Thanks in advance for any assistance on my project.

Re: Swaping LT1 1993

first time ever posting on here not sure were to start or look, but i'm looking to buy a 1996 or 1998 firebird formula with an lt1 to swap out the tranny and lt1 into my 1990 firebird, i was wondering if it would fit without any fabrications needed, or what i would have to do to get them to fit? I won't be doing it myself i was just wondering if it would all fit ok or if i should go another direction, and also how hard and much would it cost to go from my auto trans to possibly a 5 or 6 speed trans?

Re: Swaping LT1 1993

Hey guys first of all I just wanted to thank everyone for their very helpful information on this swap!

I just bought an 87 Trans Am with a junk *** bone stock 305 4BBL in it...needless to say I'm not at all impressed with it. So I have decided to swap an LT1 that I'm getting for a decent price along with the stock ECU and harness. I mainly bought the car for the cleanliness of the body not for the motor. I went to school at wyotech and am very familiar with the sensors and what they do and what ranges they need to operate in so I think I have a little bit of a jump start on this (atleast I'm hoping lol). Here are the ?s I have...i apologize if I'm asking redundant questions and appreciate your patience on the issue.

1. If no air conditioning...physical fitment of engine shouldn't be and issue and should just bolt right up correct?

2. VATS module..if I do not have the vats module that was originally in the donor vehicle is there a way to trick it? I have the ability to get resistors and solder them in...just need to know which ones...if it all possible I would like to just disable VATS completely

3. Are there any extensive mods that I need to do to the stock LT1 harness to get it to work correctly? Also does the LT1 ECU mount underhood (like LS 4th gens) or in stock 3rd gen location?

4. Also as far as converter clutch wiring goes in the trans can I just splice converter clutch engagement wires from LT1 harness to the stock connector on the 700r4 trans and get the converter clutch to operate normally?

I'm sure I will have other ?'s as this goes on but if I could get these answers before I begin the swap it would help greatly to atleast get the thing to crank lol

thanks again guys!

what if you already have a tpi and you just want to out the lt1 in?
sorry im kinda still new to this

1. Contact S&P or March and get a new serpentine pulley kit to mount the A/C up top

www.hpsalvage.com/3rdgen.htm
You will need a different fuel pump (electric). SLP's headers have worked for many people on LT1's. The painless wiring harness is highly recommended for ease of installation, it's part # PRF-60501 in summit and is $350, it specifies a reprogrammed prom. Hope this helps.
if it was only 350 i would be all over it1

Its no different than swapping in an F-body LT1, other than you'll have iron heads vs alum, and iirc they dont have vats to contend with.

All of the swap info is here, you should be able to search and find virtually anything, the swap has been done countless times since the first few of us got started back in late 90's/2000 lol.
