88 ls1 IROC build

well im going to finally do the swap and im having this as my build thread.
I found a wrecked 99 z28 with ls1 for only 1400$. The car was hit in the front pretty hard but the engine looks okay. It came with everything exempt the trans and driveshaft. I got the clutch flywheel ext..
So my goal is to change almost everything over I can into my Iroc, console and dash, engine, rear end (3.73s installed),
I had previously had the 305 tpi to the 350 tpi.we painted the car then and everything but never got around to the interior. So my goal os to also do that. This entire swap is going to be done with my dads help as im still learning about cars (only 17)!
Right now im working on getting the engine running in the z28 before I swap it over to make sure it runs fine. We got it to crank but no start... it was the comp and had some bent terminals so we straightened up what we saw. It starts but has a terribly miss.
So working on that. But I started on the interior and changed the seats over and it looks alot better so illpics soon. Ill be sure to have alot of questions for you guys so I hope you all help me and my dad through this process. Also is a budget build so we will do almost it all ourselves

Sounds like a good start. Too bad you didn't get the transmission. Make sure the one you get is the LS1 style. I had a 4th gen aluminum driveshaft in the LS1/T56 car, on the 9th launch (sticky tires) the driveshaft did a Twizzler impression. I had a 3" steel driveshaft fabricated.

If you aren't planning on racing it at the track with sticky tires, a factory 4th gen aluminum driveshaft should be fine. Same with the rear. But, if you ever get the idea to go to the track with sticky tires, a factory driveshaft and the 10-bolt won't last long with hard launches.

Im going to be going to the track maybe twice a year otherwise it will my DD. Im not sure if it is a 9 or 10 bolt as the previous owner changed the read end.

Re: 88 iroc ls1 build thread!

I was looking alot at the ls swap guide and I was very curious on brakes? They are not mentioned? Are the stock brakes up to the task of slowing down the ls third gen or would a swap be in place? Possibly ls1 brakes?

I've got stock '82 disk/drums on the LS1/4L60E (that sees the most track time), and stock '82 disk/'83 disk on the LS1/T56. Both exceed 105 MPH at the track here (even faster at sea level).

Hello, I am creating a list of the LS and LT swaps on TGO if you would be willing to add your thread to the list just visit this thread https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...ltx-swaps.html and paste a link to your thread in a reply and I'll get it added to the list.

Re: 88 iroc ls1 build thread!

So a little update! The engine runs great! Started taking it out of the car along with the rear end. Still searching for a trans though.. I probably wont find the cash til I sell my built 700r4. Oh well, I actually had a question about a cams for a ls1. Do you think it'll be a better idea to put one in before or after I put it in? I was going to do it later on for financial reasons but if its too much of a hassle then the swap can wait a couple weeks.
And another question I've had is about the wiring.. since I pretty much have the idea of a fourth gen in a Iroc body then I can pretty much use the stock harness right? Im using the stock dash, alarm, fuel tank, a/c buttons ect im sure a couple things shouldn't need to be changed such as the light plugs, fog lights ect. Would it be easier to use the original dash or a aftermark sold by hawks?

Re: 88 iroc ls1 build thread!

havent really updated my thread in a while so i took some pics of how im going along with the swap.
ive got the fourth gen plastic gas tank up in the car along with the fourth gen exhaust and fourth gen rear end.
personally im in love with how much farther it sticks out because its not to much and it looks more like a muscle car to me
also started taking off the front spoiler today to trash to make it a little easier to swap the motor in and also start working on the other one

Re: 88 iroc ls1 build thread!

im surprised im not get really any comments on my build yet! anyways i have some updates on whats been going on. i finally found a welder i could use to weld my crossmember up after i cut out the space for the a/c condensor, i made a cut for the oil plan so its not so close and i also made another cut for the o2 sensor so we could take it out and replace if ever nessesary. also we are trying to mount the fourth gen tank on it near where the hood latch is. haha this really WILL BE a fourth gen inside a iroc body

Looking real nice man, I can't wait to join the swap club later this month. I too am buying a wrecked 99 LS1 car, planning in also swapping the fuel tank, dash, and related components to my 84. I've had some great running old-school small blocks, but I'm anxious to go Gen III in a 3rd Gen.

These swaps are almost becoming routine, you pretty much have to do something crazy to get noticed.

We still have the o2 sensor in the manifold and when we were testing to see if it fit we noticed the o2 sensor didn't fit with the factory crossmember. So we modified the cap off a oxygen tank and welded it in so we can change it if we ever need to

i thought that might be what it was. i welded a bung in the pipe further down....worked better than cutting a hole in the k-member.

I didn't even think of that. I don't think it made it any weaker the cap we welded in felt really strong we actually could barely cut it so it would fit

Re: 88 iroc ls1 build thread!

Well some good news and bad news..
We got the whole front suspension put back together and bled the brakes this weekend! We actually cut the stock springs and took a whole coil off and the way the car sits now looks real good! Almost stock I think
However some bad news is when my dad was drying his motorcycle it fell over on my door but its just something else that needs to be fixed.. and luckily it didn't get the fender or quarter panels
Ill attach some pics of the cars height with the springs cut and the new dings in the door

Re: 88 iroc ls1 build thread!

Swap is looking pretty good...

Yes that part is the traction control motor. Both the accelerator cable AND the cruise control cable hook into it...then a single cable to the throttle body. Your dad was partly correct that it is part of the cruise control.

However you do NOT need a new one. What you need is a non-traction control throttle cable. And if you intend to use the LS1 cruise control module (quite easy to hook up) you will also need a non-traction control cruise cable.

But for just a straight swap...that ASR motor is doing you no good. Even if you intend to swap all of the 4th gen wiring...still wont do you any good because there are no provisions for ABS wheel speed sensors on our cars in the front. So no use even having the module.

I might have waited on cutting the springs until you had everything together and settled...but hopefully she still sits good after its back down and on the road!

J.

Well its sitting good right now with the engine in. All thats left in the front is the radiator and front clip which I can't see making that much of a difference

Re: 88 iroc ls1 build thread!

Well I think a little update is required. In the pictures the first picture lead to the second and third . Die ford! Jk it was my dads car unfortunately but hopefully it gets replaced soon. We got it all in but had a he'll of a time bleeding the clutch. Finally took the rubber out of the resvior and it bled okay. Anyways we still need to finish up some wiring and the interior a bit and it'll be almost done! Can't wait for that first drive. One little thing im a bit worried about though is the motor mileage... the guy we brought it from said it had about 110,000 on it however the gauge says 176,000 . Maybe it was a diff. Comp? Idk it sounded pretty strong and the idle was almost perfect. We did however find a small leak in the rear main seal which we replaced when we took the clutch off to replace the pilot bearing and it hasn't leaked yet so hope im good!

Historic tagging. I think after 20 years your car is eligible. Just pay for the tags and that's it! No inspection or anything. Throw em on and drive also no cop has yet to care about my cutout which I find pretty chill

Re: 88 iroc ls1 build thread!

Some great news! Went for the first drive tonight and I couldn't be happier! Car felt pretty powerful even though I never got to hammer it. One of the problems we ran into was the steering. It needs to be aligned pretty bad but the steering was kinda tough compared to what it was. Im using the stock front suspension which just brought it all newer though so wasn't anymore play. Is this 'typical' ? Just kinda curious. Hope to get the new carpet in tomorrow and well get some pics

Great build thread man. i started piecing together my LS swap over the last few weeks and Im just waiting on some parts from eastcoast performance ( great guys to deal with ) and nook and tranny. I got to ask where did you get the cone and intake tubing from as its one of the few parts I need to finish my swap

Re: 88 iroc ls1 build thread!

Little update..
well I need new tires lol but not a biggy. Car drives relatively well. I definitely get up to speed much faster than it the ol' l98. Had to order hawks other tranny crossmember as the spoon one gives almost no ground clearance for the exhaust. After some new rubber ill save up to have the exhaust finished. Its getting pretty annoying driving around with only the manifolds and two turndown pipes in so nothing gets burned. So as of now quieter seems better
im going to try to take it to the track soon to make sure its running where it should be. Then after that, the fun part really begins.. the modding!

Re: 88 iroc ls1 build thread!

Well got the new tires on and hopefully they last til I get some black co z06s! Also noticed when I push the car that it does not want to shift mainly at high rpms. Looked over at ls1tech a bit (tons of good info, however alot of immature people also) but I think its time for the tick master cylinder. I already have a new clutch, rebuilt trans and new slave and the master is new also but its stock. Anyways hopefully when I get that it'll shift smoother. Also I got my new trans cross member so when I get some cash im going to get the exhaust fabbed up

Time to revive my dead thread . Got a couple more plans to do still. Brought a zex nitrous kit off craigslist for $350 missing a couple pieces. Hoping to get that in this weekend. Also took some nice pics of my car for you guys to check out!!

Re: 88 ls1 IROC build

Got started today and got most done besides wiring and the fuel fitting which I found out I gotta order. Finally decided to mount the nmu near the struct brace hole on the passenger side, bottle where the spare tire goes, and I think ima put the switches in the ashtray. Also for the lines I decided to go throug the inside of the car. I used the hole seen in the picture to run the lines through
Quick question for you wiring gurus.. I.e. pocket
Where the hell is the tps? (Throttle position sensor) I looked and looked but didn't find squat. Also if anyone has a good picture of where it is.. can you show me which wire is also used? Thanks!

Re: 88 ls1 IROC build

Couple more pics.. shows the bracket I made to hold the nmu. I think it looks and fits nicely.. I like it better like that as I don't need to drill holes into the body I don't need to, also shows the purge setup I have. Trying to keep it "stealthy" so I painted it black. Anyone think I need to cap it off there if it rains? Or should it be good?
