My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

I just thought when I got finished de-pinning the 98 LS1 harness it would look different?? Not like 70's drapes! LOL!!

Re: Harness Progress??

best of luck to ya. i made sure to label every wire like you did, making sure to note their function and original pin location. get yourself a ton of zip ties and electrical tape; route it pretty then cut and solder/shrink wrap. take your time and enjoy!

Re: Harness Progress??

Thanks Dan, Starting to loom things up. This is why I was trying to figure out the CAI system for MAF and MAT wiring. It is 35 degrees in the shop with no heat (Texas) so It will sit for a bit till it warms up a little. Getting there though..

Then It was time to tackle the brakes, New rotors, pads, hoses and calipers.

Then it was on to fixing the leaking factory injectors.

With that out of the way it was time to address some exhausting issues. Cause you dont put crap like this on cars!! Yes, Someone used lug nutz for spacers

Now with that done I was thinking of painting colors??? I have decided to go with Clarett red Met Tint coat as seen on this fine ride.

Next up, ooops. The hatch motor broke so time to order parts and fix it.

Then I found some good used Drag radials to go play.. Car ran 9.3 in the 8th in stock form.

Then the game changed - I found this 98 SS for cheap and this is where the LS1 swap began. I figured I would let the two meet before the transplant.

And so the time came to gut the 98.

Down to bare bones.

Got some goodies in for the swap, Stainless works headers from Hawks, Mounts and x-member.

Re-visited My Thoughts for color. I know, But I realy could not make up my mind without seeing it on the car.

I have decided to stay with red.

Swapped the ole 3rd gen seats for the leathers from the 98.

Tore the old LS down to see what I had. This car was sitting in a feild for two years..

Looked pretty good to me but decided to have it built.

The 98 was a true SS by vin# but it had been wrecked several times from the looks of things. It had been rear ended more than once and this last time it cost the guy his life due to complications... So needless to say I did not really want the car, just the drivetrain and wiring. Gutted it and sold everything.

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

Started putting the LS together and Well, seems either the books are wrong or the torque wrench is off. Got the oil pump on and .002 gap around the shaft and wouldnt you know it!!! The books call for 18 ft lbs on this little bolt that holds the oil pump pick up tube to the pump. I may have gotten 10-11 lbs and snap!! Figures!

Time to start putting things back together. I heard a lot of good feedback on the Founders products So I went ahead and got my lower control arms and panhard bar. Looks like good stuff here and good prices!

I also ordered Founders Panhard relocation bar and bracket and also their Camber plate/strut mounts. They look nice, Will tackle camber plates later.

Sold the longblock to a guy for his truck and he did not want the tuned port so all of this I had to remove in about 30 min. He was coming to pick it up quick!

I will be selling all of this once the project is done.

OK, Back to wiring. Got the Chassis side cleaned up and ready( for the most part ).

The bumper is off because I needed to replace the headlamp mounting panel. Previous owner tagged a truck or something and broke it as well as pushing the upper core support back about 1/2 an inch.

Whitch leads us to where I am now, Redoing the 98 harness. Its raining wires!!

Locating connectors and laying the harness out.

Most of the harness is figured out but I feel it would be easier for me to set the motor in the hole and I think the two harnesses coming together will make more sense to me. I do have a question? Has anyone set the motor in the hole with the headers attatched? Will it go?? How hard is it to install the headers after the engine is in?? Any words of wisdom would be great

It is sold but thanks for the interest. Will be selling all of the tuned port stuff soon. I can only multitask so much. I am not familiar with selling things and shipping and payments. Will focus more on that when my mind is not overrun with wiring

First off great swap and great progress it will be a fun car when you are finished. I do not think you can put the motor in the car with the headers attached with the stock K member. I believe with the stock K-member you can fit the headers in as you are lowering the motor in. I have a tubular k member so I can't help with any other tricks though.

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

I just dropped mine in last night and there was no way it was all going in together. When the motor was on the mounts, the headers wouldn't slip in either. We had to pick the engine up a few inches off the mounts, slide the headers in, and then lower the engine back onto the mounts.

Thanks! I really hope it will be a blast to drive. The last few projects I have built I found myself pulling punches on the build and when it was said and done I was not pleased with the performance. So, I hope this thing SCREAMS!! I think once I get my head wrapped around the wiring everything else will fall into place quickly. I need to read over Pockets thread about 10 more times and I might feel comfortable with it by then... LOL!

Thanks! I figured it would be that way but was not sure and did not want to find out the hard way. Did you slip them in from the bottom or top?

I went in through the top ( engine and headers). I second the comment about reading pockets threads ten times before it feels comfortable, haha. It becomes to become easier and make clear sense of everything once you actually start putting the harness back together.

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

I have no doubts this thing will scream..especially once it is tuned.Believe me I was nervous when I did my first swap for the wiring.Pockets posts help alot but its easier once you start getting in there.Dont look at it as a mess of wiring..make yourself a chart of wires that you know you need to hook up inside the cabin vs under the hood...tackle them 1 by 1 and it will be over pretty quickly.

Its coming along nicely, dont worry about paint.I did my engine bay after I swapped the ls in and it wasnt noticeable.Just took my time with some rattle cans and cardboard

Question? With the stock K-member, are we relocating the hard brake line that runs left to right?

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

Thanks! It does look quite at home there. 2 quick questions if I may??
1. I have read that the factory P/S hoses will work for this swap ?? Which hoses? the 3rd gen or the 4th gen??

2. this little Bracket. #712 in the pic.

It is part # 12578463. I cant find any info on it other than it is related to fuel injection systems?? Needed??

Thanks in advance.

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

Factory thirdgen return ls hose is perfect, factory 4th gen pressure line works with a little bending and twisting.

Bracket in question looks like it could be the piece that protects the rear of the drivers side fuel rail from getting damaged upon install from factory. Hopefully someone can confirm or deny the bracket I question.

Lee Manufacturing, in Sun Valley, CA, has fittings you put in your steering box if you want to go to Braided steel lines. The fittings are NOT expensive. Course, ss braided line isn't exactly dirt cheap. Does make handling where the lines go easier.

Re: My 1989 IROC LS1/4L60E swap

Got a little more done today (avoiding wiring). Got the A/C bracket on and P/S on. Got the bracket assembly from Holley through Summit Racing. It worked out good I guess. I just wish the A/C lines were not all on the fender well..

Oh well, Pics of progress.

Has anyone found a fitting that would just go from the factory TPI supply hose to the quick connect at the rail? The factory TPI hose will reach with much to spare, would be such an easy thing???

I think you would need two, one to adapt the quick connect to AN and then an AN to ?? (I think saginaw, or something that is 0-ringed inside)
