The lq4 build begins

Well ive been searching for engines for awhile now, contemplating on what motor i wanna slap in my 82 Z. i have been wanted a ls motor since my uncle got his 02 z28..So I had some money saved up an i got on Craigslist searching and i ran across this 1999 lq4 had 80k on it truck was totaled. guy was asking 800$ for the motor wiring harness cpu and everything inside that engine bay. ended up getting him down to 700$. i dont think i did too bad ive heard of people getting them for 3 and 400$ but i haven seen any around here will low miles for that, anyway i got it home yesterday looks good pulled plugs and a valve cover rocker arms are tight clean didnt haven any sludge , crank is tight. plan on pulling the pan after i get another engine stand this coming week. my plan is to keep its mostly stock im wanting to do a intake, throttle body, injectors and fuel rails (depending on which intake i get), timing chain, oil pump, plugs, and wires as far as mods nothing serious. Ive been doing some research on the truck engines i know the intakes gotta go, but what intake should i use i was thinking a ls1/6 intake but i will need ls1/6 injectors and fuel rails right? or i could go with a ls2 but i will need the correct throttle body and fuel rails? i am gonna keep my 700r4 in the car when i pull the old 350 i know the older lq4s have the longer crank so i will have to take the flexplate spacer out, also can i use the stock flex plate?what converter? im wanting to get a stall i was thinking a 2800k this will be my weekend warrior but i want good drive ability. This build wont be done til the middle or end of summer i will be buying parts each week as i go. Most parts will be coming from hawks i also have been looking a spohn k member is this needed? this is a starting point of what i will need i know im forgetting a bunch of little things that will nickel and dime me, but what major things will i need? ill be uploading pics of my motor and build .

Parts list-
-Fbody pan pickup windage tray
-F body clamshells, and motor mounts
-LTs or Fbody manifolds
-LS6 Intake/w fuels rails
-walbro 255 fuel pump
-lS6 timing chain
-Melling M295 oil pump
-custom fab alt bracket
-ls1 fuel line kit

What do you mean, "take the crank spacer out"? Does your engine have a crank spacer now? With the longer crank flange, it shouldn't. So it should be ready to run with the TH700. Use a flexplate for an LS1, which should bolt up to your converter.

The biggest challenge to using the TH700 is the TV cable. What do you have planned for that?

For cathedral-port heads, the LS6 intake is the best factory piece. LS1 will cost you the most power. LS2 is better than LS1, but requires the larger 4-bolt TB, and different injectors (you can get o-rings to adapt the truck injectors to the LS2 intake - my son had to do that). All of the 4-bolt TBs were DBW from the factory, so you're looking at an aftermarket TB for DBC (and you'll need a cable mount bracket - Holley makes one, 20-139). You can use the truck TB on an LS6 intake.

If you are going to fab up alternator brackets, you can use the LQ4 damper. But, the truck water pump outlet with a passenger car intake/TB is a real pain (even worse with a DBC 4-bolt TB). You might want to consider getting an LS1 damper so the LS1 water pump is a given. Or, the later 6.0l truck pumps have the outlet in a different location. Or, the L99 Camaro pump is the longer style with the outlet moved. You might be able to get away with an LS1 water pump and the truck damper, but the belt will be out on the edge of the WP pulley.

The truck coils get in the way of the LS1/6 fuel rail fitting. You can bend it up to get it out of the way. Or, trade someone one of your truck coil packs for one of their LS1 coil packs.

What do you mean by "LS1 fuel line kit"?

I have no complaints with my Rev Max converter. Best price for a quality converter that I've seen. Won a track championship with it in my '82 Berlinetta LS1/4L60E last season.

{Oh, forgot to mention: I moved this to the LTx and LSx subforum.}

Re: The lq4 build begins

Thanks for the input very helpful. its a 99 model so i dont think it does have the spacer. Will the truck flexplate work if i round out the holes to bolt up to my converter? the tv cable issue i was on ls1 tech and seen this http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/cata...php?ITEMID=225. im wanting to go with the ls6 intake fuel rails and use my TB. on to The truck water pump outlet if i get a ls1 damper i can use a ls1 water pump? as for the Ls1 fuel line kit here is what i was thinking http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/pr...l-Line-Kit.htm

I've heard of the Bowtie Overdrives TV cable LS kit, but don't have any personal experience with it.

The truck flexplate might work with rounded holes for the TC bolts. Personally, I'd be concerned about not having a full surface for the bolt shoulders to grip, and I've had enough TC bolt issues in the past to convince me it's worth the extra $60-$75 for a used or even new flexplate.

Something's wrong with your Hawks' link, but if you're talking about this (assuming this link works) http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/pr...-Line-Kit.html , it won't work with a factory carb car. For less than what that kit cost, you could put in all new aluminum line with hardware store and parts store fittings that would do just fine. I can't see if you got the flex line to the fuel rail with the engine, but I'm using the one that came off of my LQ4 in my LS1/4L60E swap into my '82 Berlinetta (originally V6 car, I'm using the factory steel hard line from the filter to the engine compartment).

Re: The lq4 build begins

as far as mods im going with LS6 intake/w fuel rails using my TB,LS6 timing chain,LS6 cam figure if i got the engine out might as well do a cam swap melling oil pump just for insurance.. Will i need to do any tuning with a cam swap? i wanna get the engine built and and everything before i start tackleing the wiring.

I'm just running a mail order tune. Someday I need to have it done "professionally".

You'll have to have some level of tuning done to get rid of VATS, unused emissions functions, etc.

You'll also need to get a VSS signal to the PCM. You said TH700, which is cable drive speedometer, I presume. A transducer between the cable drive and cable should do it, wired into the proper PCM pins.

hmm i might just go ahead and add a ls1 flexplate to the list. Yes that was the fuel line kit i was talking about. ill just wait get the motor done and go from there, this build aint gonna be done over night just trying to build my foundation and go from there. thanks again for the input.
