Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
Hey im not going to be able to piant the car till after winter so for now me and my dad are giving it a temp spray can job. Any one got any pointers or tips??
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
I live in omaha nebraska and it can get pretty freakin cold here during the winter. I was wondering since i have a fiberglass hood, during the winter going from cold to warm to hot would it crack the hood. Should i take off for winter and put stock hood back on? Or is there some temp thing i can do to the hood to prevent cracking (if it would)?

Awesome, did ou notice much difference in sound?? Im thinking about taking mine off, but i have emmisions testing here and would haft to put it back once a year....was your bolted on or had someone already welded it? mines welded so i gotta find a shop to get rid of it
These are the videos of my exhaust with out the cat.
And its bolted
And K&N tomorrow 2.5"
Awesome! Ive gotta see if I get an exaust shop here to brake the welds on my cat and put exhaust hangers on so I can take it off. What did you put in its place? just a piece of pipe??? Also how big is the piping from the y pipe to the muffler??
Ive ment to post this, but this is my spolier brake light
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
New tranny pan that i bought off summit
Im also thinking about buying a B&M shift improver kit to hopefully solve my slippage problems. Has anyone heard of any thing with those? I would probably take to a shop too because i really dont wanna screw up with that stuff.

skip the b&m junk. does nothing but jury rig your tranny to bang shift, doesn't do anything to increase holding power.
if your slipping isn't bad, a corvette servo, a .500 boost valve, and an oversized low/reverse boost valve will do wonders.
i know when i had my tranny rebuilt, i was told i had the weakest servo available for a 700. i had a decent amount of 2-3 slip when it went in for a rebuild. surprisingly he also said my clutches didn't look too bad.

Ive heard the b&m ones are junk and that a trango one is the way to go...If you do this let me know how much the install was, im curious to know.
Also I got my cat off, it is so damn loud now, I will try and make a video soon
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
My tranny blew today on my way to school today, I totally lost 2nd gear. So my parents are buying me a new one for Christmas. I plan on buying a rebuilt 700r4 from ebay for $800. The new things done to it are
1:CORVETTE SERVO REAL FIRM 1-2 SHIFTS HERE! 2:HARDENED SUN SHELL AND GEAR (A MUST FOR ONE WITH SHIFT KIT) 3:.500 BOOST VALVE AND PRESSURE SPRING 4:PERFORMANCE T.V.BOOST AND SPRING 5:NEW/REMAN PUMP ASSEMBLY 10 VANES 13 IN OUR RACE FULL MANUAL UNIT. 6:NEW HIGH ENERGY CLUTCHES 7:NEW HIGH ENERGY BAND 8:STAGE 3 JACKSON PERFORMANCE SHIFT KIT. 9:JACKSON PERFORMANCE 3000 STALL CONVERTER BALLON PLATES AND FURNACE BRAZED FINS.
I'm probably going to buy it tomorrow or sometime this weekend.
How hard is it to install it myself because we don't really have the money to buy the tranny and have a place install it?
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
Lose the hatch, gloss black, get rid of all the shucks stuff the steering wheel and seat covers and floormats is what i mean, get some stock rims would be a good start

What is wrong with the seat covers and floormats? I understand the steering wheel and hatch, but wht the other things?
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
so did you decide to do it? or get a shop? its not a big deal, just pull the engine with the trans......id say put on a new flexplate while your at it, 30 bucks? and give the engine bay a good cleaning and maybe a coat of gloss black? If you do decide to do the tranny swap it wouldnt be that hard, just mark where all the wires go
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
Yea im gunna do it myself. I was wondering if i need a new torque conveter, i wanna keep the stock stall. Do you think the stock one i got on there now will be fine?
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
curious why do you wanna keep the boring stock stall? Why not up it a little bit to say 2k or so? If you're putting in a new tranny its normally a good idea to replace the converter too but you'd probably be alright with reusing it.. Also on the pull the engine idea to do the tranny, thats just extra work, just jack the car up and pull the trans by itself.. don't make more work for yourself.
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
im sure id rather wrestle with a transmission out of the car instead of up under it with a jack......its only 2 bolts and a radiator and a few wires.....it may seem like extra work now.....just wait til you go to put in the bellhousing bolts and hooking up the convertor......plus you might bust your distributor when you take the trans loose from the engine
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
go with an s10 torque converter. 2200 stall. would be worth 2/3 tenths in the 1/4.
if i hadn't of gone with a custom 9 inch TC from edge racing, an s10 woulda been the ticket.
i believe the 96 model with a 4.3 is the one to look for.

Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
that intake really doesn't suit your combo at all, especially with a stock converter.. not really a good manifold for a street driven car at all, I'd suggest selling it and looking for a dual plane. You'd really loose power down low and slow your car down a ton. If you're gonna use it anyway look for a converter around the 3k stall range, that manifolds powerband is from 2,500 to 6,500. Also what cam are you running? That would be terribly mismatched to a stock cam.

Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
Well the tranny is in and works! i ended up getting a medium stall torque converter from advanced auto parts. I have the stock cam in right now but once i get some money that will be my next project. Since I got the medium stall is that intake manifold good to put on?
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
id go with like a performer or a performer rpm......if you want one i have a nearly new one for cheap....the Torqer is a high reving intake.....305s dont do well at high rpms.....for your set up something around 1800-6000 would work well
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
So i was cruisin around my neighborhood yesterday and i gassed it all the way and my exhaust fell out of the y pipe. so im runnin the exhaust out the y pipe until i buy a cutout. It sounds sooo freakin sweet!
I did my first actual street race today, i lost by the front end of my car. It was a newer turbo'ed eclipse. The guys were real cool about it though.
Im getting a Eaton posi unit from summit for $480 within this month or the next, then after i get that paid for im gunna do cam, intake, and K&N xtreme flow (or whtever its called)
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
for all the money your pouring in that 305 you could be building a mean 350.........posi sounds good, but for the money you could find a used posi rear
for way less and install it
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
hey nice camaro man, I just bought an 84 for my first car a few days ago. (check post) My first mod will also be a pair of headers. I can't wait. Good luck with further mods.
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
Thats cool about the rear end, but if I was you i would find a used 9 bolt with posi and dsic, that way you could upgrae to disc brakes too and get a stronger rear with posi.
As much work as a cam swap is you might as well do a 350, I was looking into doing one a while back, but the more i looked i realized a 350 would be a better choice.
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
Well im gunna drive this little 305 for alittle bit longer, prob till mid summer and Im hopefully gunna convince my dad to let me to build a 350 or a 383 over the summer and ill drop that in there.
As for the torque converter I no it is a lot higher stall then stock so im not really sure.
Instead of making wild guesses, you can read the # off the side of your case and it will tell you what the stall speed most likely is. All bets are off for auto parts store reman converters because they often mix and match internals. I bought a high stall application converter from Advance a year ago that ended up having low stall internals in it.
But if you made any "upgrade" at all over stock stall, it was probably about 100-200 rpms upgrade. There is no such thing as "a lot higher than stock" w/ the low/medium/high stall stock converters. They are a couple hundred rpms apart depending on application.

Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
I picked up a set of cragers with triumph tires for $125, i think the tire specs are 315-75-15 in back and 315-70-15 in front, tires still got bout 95% tread left on all of them too, it was one hell of a deal!
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
soooo i pretty shure im gunna buy a 350 prob pretty soon! Im gunna spend about $500 for a used one from craigslist.org. just got a couple questions. Will my 700r4 bolt up to the 350 without any modifications? And what should i look for when looking to buy the engine (like cracks in block and other stuff like that)?
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
Its a solid, nice driver to start off with.... and the 305 carborated motors are easy to work on and easy to diagnose problems as well.... its a good clean slate and a nice looking driver, good luck with it and its a nice car!!!!

I would go with an eldelbrock intake for now, its a nice intake and it will give you about 10 to 15 horse power...... They make a nice intake and its a good temporary intake if you want to go with something else later on down the road if you want to do heads and cam...... you can pick one up cheap at a pepboys or speed shop!!!!

Just make sure the bell housing matches up and if it does then you dont have to modify anything, if it doesnt you will have to go with a 700r4 from a 1988-1992 v8 305 or 350 camaro..... The things you want to check for with the motor is no cracks like you said, make sure it runs also before you buy it, ask what car it came out of, past owners if they beat on it, if the motor was rebuilt, and and any modifications done to it such as heads, cam, ect.... if there was mods then ask who installed them because many people dont know what their doing!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!! if you have any questions ask me im here!!!!
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
of course your 350 will bolt up to your 305's trans. If the intake you are refering to is that victor or whatever it was u were talking about a few months back why havnt you sold it yet? Really though don't put that on you will regret it. The $500 price sounds good if all it needs is a lil paint.
Re: My first car! 1987 camaro! suggestions please!
This is the post from a guy that had a 350 up for sale
"I have a 350 I bought as a new crate motor and put it in my old chevy truck.
It is a 4 bolt main.
It has an edelbrock performer manifold and edelbrock 650 4 barrel carb.
Roughly 40,000 miles on it. Running STRONG when I pulled from my truck.
It has been in my garage sitting for about 5 years. never drained the oil or anything so it should be fine." Same Guy Earlier post
"Up for grabs is my 4 bolt main chevy 350 that I bought as a new crate motor and put in my old chevy truck. It has an edelbrock performer manifold and edelbrock 650 4 barrel carb.
I put roughly 40,000 miles on it before the truck fell apart. Running STRONG when I pulled from my truck.
It has been in my garage sitting for awhile, but i checked and it cranks over by hand. Has all the stuff still on it: alternator, steering pump, distributor, fuel pump, etc...
A great price, the Intake and carb would cost you nearly as much as this whole motor. This is an email i got from him
"I would sell it for $400 on the spot.
That was the original minimum I had in my head.
It is a solid motor.
I will even throw in a set of Micky Thompson Aluminum Valve Covers that
I had for it"
Does this sound like a good deal?
Is it a bad thing its been sitting for that long with the fluids in it?
Please give feedback!
