little brother's suprise graduation present (start to finish)

jack (my little brother) frequents this board, so to keep this a secret, i couldn't post it up on here. but, i figured since you guys like to see progress pics and such, not to mention finished products are a plus, i'd post up since he got the car back today.

as a result, i'm just going to copy and paste:

so my little brother now has andrew's old car. we've been working on it pretty diligently the last few months trying to get the car ready for paint. he really doesn't have the money to get it painted and i started thinking about what i was going to do for him for graduation. it's not gonna be a show stoppin' paint job, but it'll be all one color and i think he'll crap a brick once he gets home from visiting our grandparents for a month and sees it. anyhow, here's progress pics.

my good friend jeremy winters is doing all the work. i'm helping as best i can, but it's turning out to be mostly me just being a "go-fer", lol!

yes that is the hood from my white car. i'm gonna fix my old cowl hood and put it back on the white car. jack didn't like the iroc style hood so this is what i came up with. all this is happening in secret, so keeping it from him, but still pulling enough information out of him for his personal prefrences has been an interesting challenge.

jeremy is coming over to block the whole car tomorrow and wednesday, and i'm having my ISS at work (i'm working at O'Reily's now) order the paint today. "flame red gm paint code 9353" is what it's getting painted...basically back to stock, the maroon metallic color. i'm getting excited now

pics of yesterday's work. like i said, the car is now blocked in 320. jeremy's coming over today to get the rest of the car prepped and in 600 wet. so far, i've pulled the rest of the emblems off and pulled the inner fenders. i'm not really sure what's left to do. i don't wanna take lights all the way out cause it has to be driven to the paint booth where i'll ****** the tails out. anyone got any ideas of what i can do while i'm waiting on my day off, let me know!

Re: little brother's suprise graduation present (start to finish)

i just left jeremy's house. our paint booth fell through, so we made one at his house. i'll get some pics up as soon as he sends me some( i forgot my camera again) the booth is actually pretty nice looking considering our situation. this job is done on the CHEAP, but we still are doing the best we can with what we got. basically we just hung some tarps around the side of jeremy's car port, then he put some box fans at each end with old A/C filters on each side. it's lookin' like it's gonna work GREAT. the car is taped up and is getting basecoat tomorrow afternoon and a clear on friday morning. i'm getting the car friday evening and i'm gonna be able to get good pics of it saturday. i'm excited!

Re: little brother's suprise graduation present (start to finish)

it's back at the house guys! went and picked it up this evening between storms, lol! there's some minor issues that'll need to be addressed by jeremy behind a buffing wheel, but he's assured me it'll all buff right out. i'll get some better pics later when it's reassembled, but i can tell you this right now, the color is gorgeous.

Re: little brother's suprise graduation present (start to finish)

yes, it's actually an 82-83 z28 hood. very rare in good shape. this one is in excellent shape. it's a factory fiberglass hood. (fyi, the 84's looked identical, but were infact, steel) i bought it for my race car, but after using it for a couple of months, i realized that i need to go back to a cowl hood for my own camaro. so the hood was donated to the project as well.

The "You guys suck" comment was hilarious.

I don't want to sound uber-queer and say that what you did was "really sweet", but it was. Very thoughtful gift.

Like he said...Not so much as rare, as in good shape. Although, the factory 'glass ones are becoming "rare", and the steel ones are more common. The factory 'glass ones had a problem with the top panel suddenly peeling off, yet the bottom was still down & latched. Customers got steel ones as warranty replacements & while the 'glass ones only lasted 2 years.

Re: little brother's suprise graduation present (start to finish)

the paint is nason and consumer price is roughly $40/qt. not banged up yet, lol! he's got plans to put a new grill in it, as well as new emblems and decals all the way around. he wants to put the iroc stripes on it too. as far as future plans goes, i'm not quite certain, other than full suspension...maybe a motor build eventually?

so my little brother now has andrew's old car. we've been working on it pretty diligently the last few months trying to get the car ready for paint. he really doesn't have the money to get it painted and i started thinking about what i was going to do for him for graduation. it's not gonna be a show stoppin' paint job, but it'll be all one color and i think he'll crap a brick once he gets home from visiting our grandparents for a month and sees it. anyhow, here's progress pics.

what kinda wheels are those? on the car being fixed. im diggin em
my good friend jeremy winters is doing all the work. i'm helping as best i can, but it's turning out to be mostly me just being a "go-fer", lol!

That was only on certain 83 SMC hoods. In order to save a few bux, GM changed the supplier for the glue that held the hood together. So when GM switched vendors, the glue was bad. All 82 SMC hoods, and the left over 82 hoods that were put on 83 model cars in the beginning of 83 production run, where not affected by the separation problem. So GM put a recall on certain 83 SMC hoods because of this glue failure. I did a lot of research on this, I even found the range of VIN #s that the recall applied to.

FYI: If you had one of those hoods effected by the recall, GM replaced it with a steel hood. And all 84 Z28 hoods were steel.

Anyways, that is awesome what you did. I always loved that style hood. Hense why I have one too.
