The hopes of a beautiful thirdgen start here.

hello I'm kinda new to this board, not new to cars for my age. This is my second thirdgen my first one was a complete lemon.

I have no pictures of it but it was a red tbi with a 5 speed. I bought the car for 2500 drove it 5 hours home and 4 hours in the trip it began overheating pulled over put coolant into it limped it home watching the gauge.

well 4 months the car finally left the garage. I had replaced everything. timing chain, fuel pump, injectors, numerous gaskets, timing chain, clutch, drive shaft, and ecm the car just wouldnt run right. It was extremely jerky. Finally last solution cut the cat out start the car instantly I know its fixed take it out for my first drive since I got it 4 months before. get up to 60 miles an hour viloent shake, well somehow I bent two rims coming home>????? Replaced them still shaking, all the tires balanced. Turns out it had bad ball joints one was so bad for so long that it hollowed out the spindle. got sick of this car pump went out replaced it put a g92 from and 89 firebird 3:45 gears awsome couldnt get the ebrake to work. I had it with that car sold it for 100 less then I Bought it.

Well I got kinda bored of 240sx E30s and e36s just lacked the fun.

Decided I wanted another go at a thirdgen so searched high and low. for a 5 speed tpi car. Found one was an 89 iroc lb9 g92 car looked awsome in the pictures well I ended up driving 5 hours to rust so bad I could see through the framerails, rusted out, and overheated while the test drive.

well one week later drove to parsons kansas to find this one. This car isnt perfect but its a good start in my opinion for a 19 year old I car alot about cars I'm not about speed Im about a quality of ride (got it from bimmers) The guy gave me 4000 dollars worth of reciepts. And I bought the car for 3000 It needs a pilot bushing and injectors. Its a white z28 with red leather interior L98 converted to a 5 speed. It has all new poly bushings and hotckis springs. Plans for it are sfc, all suspension I can do.. rebuild the motor stock or with very mild cam.

But for now I'm just aiming to work the kinks out. Here is my new project.

it has 162k on it he said the owner before him put a crate motor in it but you can never go off what people say. The car starts fine runs like a champ and doesnt smoke at all. Plans for the future are to rebuild the motor anyways. Also have receipts for pretty much an entire new suspension. with the last year.

That thing looks mint dude. Good find. I really like the stance, colour and rims! I was never a fan of the stock 91-92 Z28 rims but painted black like that, brings all new means to sweet! Nice!

-ditching the t5 and got. T56
-picked up everything for black interior
-smog delete pulley
-hooker 2460'
-36 mm sway and 25 mm for rear
-quick ratio box
-ls1 brakes for the front

And I'm still saving and shopping

Re: The hopes of a beautiful thirdgen start here.

You and I had similar experiences....I purchased a 1989 IROC 5.7 11 years ago and spent $500 a month fixing the darn thing. In the end I figured I spent about $900 a month owning the car!!! Ended up trading it in for a BMW which has been an awesome car but there is something about the third gen I just love.....Went out and picked up a 1988 IROC last February and it has been just awesome!! No issues at all (not a DD though)....At this point I have a Durango R/T, a Mercedes CLK 430 convertible, BMW 325i and the IROC....guess which one is parked in the garage??? LOL!

Dont beat on the T5 too hard, it will break, but as long as you dont power shift it all the time it should last a while. I think all V8 sports cars that aren't used exclusively for drag racing should have manuals. It's just way too much fun to bang em through the gears when there's that much torque behind it.

well they previous owner pretty much destroyed this transmission I believe. I hear gears whining at idle and they dont sound any better going up from there. So I found a t56 and just locating some other parts and it'll be ready to go in.

Re: The hopes of a beautiful thirdgen start here.

well Its been A long time since I've updated. I still haven't driven the car more then the distance home and maybe a few times around the parking lot.

I've been extremely busy with projects for others, Friends bmw cracked a head, girlfriend vw golf motor had it. That cars just a lemon though just constantly needing something.

And now I pulled in my dads 77 camaro to rebuild the front end. Was gunna be a simple job until I looking at the driver side lower control arm mount. Turns our someone must have wrecked this car or ditched because the bracket had clearly been cut off and some metal welded back on. Well I didn't want to send this car out with the amount of power its putting down it could get someone hurt. So I ended up just pulling the trigger on pulling the subframe. Heres it present condition I'm kinda trying to rush so I did this in roughly two days. (this was a running driving car before this.)

Ill get some picture when its done. Its 1977 camaro z28 with a muncie 4 speed, 350 bored .030 over with more work, Brodix heads with 2.02 and 1.96 valves and abit of porting, full comp aluminum roller rockers. 468 lift cam, and a demon 650or 750 I dont remember right now. This car makes me very jealous of that power.

Well heres some updates on My camaro.

Other then its been sitting. Ive been saving and collecting alot of parts and still have alot more I plan to get.

Picked up a pbr caliper 10 bolt out of a 91 camaro with 3:42 gears I just rebuilt with all new seals, bearings, pads and rotors. Also went ahead and got a ta cover and a set of ss brake lines. I spent a bit of time cleaning it up and everything else I almost dont want to put it under a car.

Re: The hopes of a beautiful thirdgen start here.

well finally after almost two years of just looking
at the car and rarely getting to even enjoy the pleasure of just moving it around. I got tired of it and decided I was going to start making some serious headway. So I found a garage for rent about 6 miles from my house. So finally here are some progress shots right now its the boring stuff just dis-assembly.

heres a shot of the interior after sitting for ever

after tearing it apart

Re: The hopes of a beautiful thirdgen start here.

heres a shot of the wall of parts. I dont really know what do with all of them Most of them I won't be using again.

I'm also working on removing the undercoating which is the worst job I know everyone says this. But until you get under there and start doing it. It just sucks.

I've completely stripped the car of all its suspension, interior, fenders, and most the drivetrain

Just ordered some koni sports to top of all the suspension goodies this car is going to get. along with a tubular crossmember and control arms I bought from spohn when they where having the independence day sale.

Re: The hopes of a beautiful thirdgen start here.

well been busy with the car lately finally feel like I'm making some progress, in the past few weeks I ended up pulling the motor to make the suspension rebuild easier and cleaning as well. So I decided against putting it back in stock,

so I'm having the heads rebuild and ill be doing some porting and right now I'm searching for a super ram to replace the stock tpi setup, and a doing a gasket overhaul along with a new cam and lifter.

so While waiting for the heads I cleaned the firewall and painted it white, I dont really like how it turned out so I might redo it;

and finished cleaning the and coating the front fenderwells I'm very excited about this

these photos are with just the first coat

sorry the lighting isnt the best.

Re: The hopes of a beautiful thirdgen start here.

well I wanted to finish the front suspension today but had so much trouble getting just the passenger side spring in that I wasnt able to start on the driver side. seriously is it that hard? I was worried the the compressor was going to break, I had pulled it down so far. Scratched some of the powder coating kinda bummed about that.

I also Dont like the red strut boot but I couldnt find them in any other color locally Probably will change this out once the motor is back in.

I also got the power booster and steering box cleaned and painted so went ahead and installed them to relieve some anger from the springs.

Re: The hopes of a beautiful thirdgen start here.

well got the other side done today, also mounted the sway bar and wonder bar, I would have done the steering but I think something is wrong with the center link I got in the spohn rebuild kit its very tight and I had to unbolt the idle arm and put it on the center link and bolt it down and it pulls down really hard.

so the front suspension is pretty much done.

Re: The hopes of a beautiful thirdgen start here.

as well As making decent progress on the car today, I got my major piece for the motor, wasnt planning on building the motor just yet but Since I pulled it I decided to do some work.

So far I've ported the stock heads and are at the machine shop being machined to accept a larger cam, The cam I'm going with is a lunati .489/.489 112 lsa dont remember the duration right now and a super ram which I got the top half today

still looking for the base and a set of 1.52 sa roller rockers.
