1984 z28 Restoration/Build thread. Body, and drivetrain.

Ok I have a 1984 Camaro z28 that I bought for $500 with no engine or trans. I am going threw the whole car. In the end every part off the car, including every nut and bolt will have been taken off. I am doing all the work myself.

Here is how it looked when I brought it home.

I then took out the rear end, and cleaned the hell out of it, New calipers, and pads, machined the rotors, dumed the fluid, and re filled it. and painted it.
Took out the tank and it was soo rusty inside, I had to get another one.
Newer tank put in.

the shock towers were completly destroyed, it looked like someone drove around with bad shocks for along time, causing them to go threw the floors. So I got some thick washers and welded them in.

Very nice Curt, prolly would get more good replies and help over here being a thirdgen and all. But I wanted to ask you, when sanding surface rust off your car like a fender or something. How do you begin to do it correctly? Just jump right in and start sanding and smoothing it all out? Help a body newb out a little! lol

Well I would just take 36 grit sandpaper on a 8 inch or 6 inch DA type pad, and shave it off with a buffer/polisher at a low rpm. Thats what im doing with my whole car.

nice project! I also have 84 Z-28, original owner, starting fairly major freshening up of a car already still in pretty good shape, but I am borrowing/stealing all kinds of ideas from your work and pictures. THX for sharing. bob y

Re: 1984 z28 Restoration/Build thread. Body, and drivetrain.

I love how this is proceeding! And I have a huge sense of deja-vu - it's just like my own restoration over the previous winter 2008/2009 (although I only did about half the work myself, I'm nowhere near as skilled as you...)

I just can't help but think it's a shame you didn't save the original 82-84 nose section There's so few of them left... Was it bent too much? It didn't seem like anything that couldn't be brought back to shape.

But I see you're changing all the gfx around the car so that they'll all match, that's nice!

Can't wait to see the whole car painted, or at least nicely primed

Thanks! Well The nose that was on there when I got it was garbage in my opinion, it was really warped and bent up. But I had A brand new 82-84 z28 nose for it, it was never painted, BRAND NEW, and I was going to stick to the 84 gfx cause they are different but I just cant get over how much I like the look of blue iroc's so since I was doing everything on this car the way I wanted it. I thought I might as well put the front nose that I like on it. Then I had to find the rest of the mathching 85-90 gfx.

And yeah it wont be painted for a while. Im a broke 17 year old, that is trying to build a car by myself. So Im just going to finish the body work, put a nice coat of urathane primer on it, leave it for the year, and put my money twards the drivetrain so I can enjoy it this summer.

subscribing! although the newer IROC nose looks good, I would've gotten an original 82-84 Z28 nose but that's just my opinion. I also LOVE how you painted the engine bay!

NOO lol, don't tell me that, I already sold a BRAND NEW one that is no longer produced. But W.E I'm still happy with my choice, I wanted it all solid blue, and the 82-84 z28's don't look good is solid color, they need two tone, like with silver, and I don't like the color I got with two tone.

I just subscribed to your thread too. Good luck!

You're 17??? The work you're doing there screams something along the lines of 57 and an experienced veteran of 100 restorations, LOL!

You're really good with this stuff

Yeah you have a point. Personally I think that monotone 82-84 cars look kinda cheap, especially the Z28. But the newer thirdgens look good in one color. And thanks for subscribing!

And yeah I as well just noticed that you're 17. Damn! I wish I had the resources you have!! I'm 18 right now; I bought my T/A back in August when I was still 17 too.

They still need at least the stripe decals above the gfx, IMHO. They look a bit weird without some color/tone accent there.

I guess that's true for some colors. Although these monotone IROCs look fine, but that's just my opinion.

But yeah assuming you're painting it blue I guess you'd wanna slap on a small strip running along the bottom I suppose.

Re: 1984 z28 Restoration/Build thread. Body, and drivetrain.

ok So I got a good update. The car was primed with Uratane 2k Primer, To seal it from rusting for a couple months, and Then I sprayed it with Hot rod Black Primer, cause the yellow doesnt look to good. I will be leaving it like this for a little while untell I finish the Drivetrain. I would rather drive it with flat black, then not have the money to finish the drive train, and it be painted. So the car was down to bare metal when I primed it. And I will be priming all the gfx, spoiler, hood, and rear bumper in a few days (wasnt enough room in the little bay) I think it looks good, and should be decent for now. BTW, The Body work is NOT done yet, and still had alot of dents and what not. I will finish body work before I paint it for the final time.
Here is the hood that I got for $50 bucks, it was a brand new Hardwood 3" cowl bolt on hood, it was badly damaged. But I reparied it.

The interior is still empty.

Few pics of me priming it.

2k urathane

Re: 1984 z28 Restoration/Build thread. Body, and drivetrain.

Then I 320'd the whole car after it was dry, and Then today I painted the Black. Here it was after I unmasked it.

Also I got my crank back again, After being balanced, I mic'ed it and the last rod bearing jornal had a small tapper to it, So I had it ground about .0010 or soo. So Now I can start building my bottum end. Also I will be getting my heads tommarow, They are World products, Sportsman II's, 2.02 1.60 valved, 200cc intake runner.
