85 z28 t top+84 sport coupe= one solid camaro

I was looking for a trans and a guy i know had a 700r4 so i went to look at it. the trans was sitting in the car he wanted 150$ for the trans. While im really bad when it comes to projects i tend to buy everyone i come across. Soooo i asked what he would take for the whole thing it was all there - engine which i already had he said 400$. so as i was driving home car on trailer (yes bought it on spot) i started planning it out figured i would start a project log

Hood in in the bed of truck ints not missing just no on the car

i took the lights out the min it was in the shop i started working on it

fav pic so far

all in all think i did good considering it came with everything - engine and i only paid 400$ and maybe 15$ gas he lives 10 min from me. Only rust is in the floors and surface rust on the lip of the quarter panel i do lots of metal work so no issue

also have whole interior just took it out its blue i want black

I like black air cleaner set. It'll look good in the engine bay IMO. Can't wait to see!

Re: 1985 z28 t top

also have a black timing cover and the engine bay is getting sanded down and bedlinered and wheel wells and whole bottom of the car. BEFORE i get a comment about how it looks stupid the stuff i used is paintable and will all be pained same color as the car. gauges are also being replaced with all autometer gauges. im undecided on wheels still though

Re: 1985 z28 t top

yeah i checked it out and commented i have the same floor issue you have no big deal best place to fix metal just weld in a plate and call it good nothing fancy its gonna be hidden anyways as long as its strong and done right

only reason im bedlinering is because i have a 5 gallon bucket of it still 1/2 full after i did my mud truck why waste whats already paid for

Re: 1985 z28 t top

Heres the rest of what i did the first day. After ripping the inside out it was getting late but i wanted to look at a few things so heres some pics

got the passenger wheel off wheel wells look great on the passenger side theirs a hole about the size of a dime but a easy to fix spot.

close up of the same spot

i was surprised how well its cleaning up the strut tower is what i started to clean so if you look at the firewall you can tell how much it cleaned up

quick undershot (took for a before after pic)

ill have more tomorrow

Re: 1985 z28 t top

alright another update

since im bedlinering the front end i had to take the front clip off soo heres some pics of my progress

took it a little slow got the first fender off 1/2 the dang bolts broke but i got it out

than i took off the front bumper and everything all as a unit went faster than i thought it would actually sure makes the car look a lot smaller

no real rust to speak of up here i was worried taking it apart but i was happy once i was this far its better than i expected it would be

little bit more time i got the other fender off it all looks really good accept the lug nuts i have to drill out 4 of them

theirs a quick update for today any suggestions lets hear them

Re: 1985 z28 t top

OK now for the actual work .... FLOORS YEAH ... not

as you can see drivers floor needs help nothing i cant do but its what you get when you pay next to nothing for a car

back part of drivers floor

general shot inside and front passanger floor

rear passenger floor not to bad there

as far as the front end goes this is the only damage little rust hole in fender well easy fix (already fixed lol)

front clip has really really cleaned up a ton im getting close to blasting or sanding it and painting it

i know this is usually a problem spot but my core support is 100% in tact just some oil and dirt i have to brush out

Re: 1985 z28 t top

little more progress getting close to blasting the bottom fixing floors and undercoating

dropped the trans out i have high lift jack stands so i was able to just slide it out from under the car dipstick tube and all

i dont think the torque converter is the stock one its very new looking and the trans had no dust shield so im guessing this was replaced not to long ago

a shot through the rad support down the trans tunnel lots of dirt and grease to clean off

removed the 1/3 of a factory ac box that was left someone hacked it up i got what was still attached lol

and suggestions comments etc lets hear them

the back is faster and easier than the front on the front you have to trim a ton and cut out for seat mounts and trim the sides a lot but the back was a lot faster almost just drops in

im going to put dynomat down soon (the carpet is cut and fitted but not glued so i can still do stuff to the floor) but i plan to do it since im gonna have my subs it will help with that. Also por15 on the floors inside and out + a layer of flat black paint making sure i can avoid rust as much as possible. Been thinking about putting a stick in vs the 700r4 thats in it to

Re: 85 z28 t top+84 z28 hard top= one solid nice camaro

while something new some interior shots. i got loads and loads of parts now between the cars ive bought and junk yard trips i think i have about 2 of everything or more so now i know i got everything needed for interior so thats gonna be set heres some picks of the stuff and my piles of crap for the car lol

that pile is all interior plastics (keep in mind theres a set in the car as well) so ill be able to put a nice interior in as well as new carpet and great door panels

custom aluminum panels for the gauges and center console and B&M shifter

looks crazy dirty in pics idk why but its actually clean i think the flash reflects dust bad but thats the back seats and trunk is all there and installed with new carpet

i think i really lucked out on this car it was a good find

Re: 85 z28 t top+84 z28 hard top= one solid nice camaro

alright few days ago i spent some time taking things apart to get the front end ready for sanding down and coating so i can drop the engine in

heres how it started out (theres a plate screwed in over the heat and ac im gonna take it off and reinstall heat

few side shots of the strut towers (really the paint is not that bad but if im gonna make it look nice im gonna at least make it nice under the hood to )

got the hood off starting to rip it all down

got the front clip removed all taken down found one nice thing the front fenders are both 100% new stock replacements so i got new fenders

Re: 85 z28 t top+84 z28 hard top= one solid nice camaro

NEWS

so i was workin on the car today and found something interesting. the vin # shows they car was an automatic (which i know it was not it was factory stick) and that 2 vin #'s didnt match. the car came with a firebird front end a z28 front end and a sport coupe front end. While i knew it was not a firebird but i was looking and couldnt see how to mount the ground effects and than it hit me why there 2 vin #'s the car was a sport coupe cloned to a z28. a few things tipped me off no ground effect holes, k-member was modified (was a v6 stock now v8) , and the different vin #'s. so it turns out my second body is a 84 sport coupe v6. I plan to keep it v8 but im gonna use the sport coupe front and need a rear bumper as well. someone just changed the easy to see vin # to a z28

Re: 85 z28 t top+84 sport coupe= one solid camaro

did a bit more work yesterday

started sanding it down a bit removed the steering and master cylinder all i have left to remove is the break booster and the engine bay is spotless.

also pulled the trans out of this car as well

now is the fun part rear end drop out and sand and paint engine bay and underside of the car

since its a sport coupe i think ill put that kinda front end back on it and its stock color was a light blue anyone know the name of that color ?
