Doh! I wanted to run new headers with a 3" but my friend is determined to make true duals with an x pipe for when I go forced induction with new heads. I know that can be a headache on these cars though.

If you run hedman LT's the collector will try to occupy the same space as the slave cylinder on the T5. HOWEVER... if your buddy can cut off the collector, extend it a few inches and slightly BFH it where the slave cylinder is, you can actually route a dual 2.5 pipe OVER the crossmember and get AMAZING ground clearance.

I saw a buddy of mine do it to another friend's car, and he said he would only do it if you had solid motor mounts, but the ground clearance from that setup was incredible. Not much needs a dual 3 inch setup. A dual 2.5 is equal (baaaaaaaaarely bigger than a single 3.5) to a single 3.5, and a 3 inch pipe is supposedly good to ... what? 450hp?

I will get a vid of the car tearing loose soon... If I wasn't doing a complete new system soon I would definitely install a resonator... The car is very very loud at all RPM ranges... It has a single Flowmaster in the rear, nothing in between. I push in the clutch and coast by cops now

My old V belt driven powersteering pump has been growing a persistently bigger leak out the pump seal, so I am looking at throwing on my GM performance serpentine system I have in the basement on this week. I love the clean simple look of my car right now under the hood. Very 60s, but the reliability of the serp system (Where as V... multiple belts, having to tighten frequently etc...), and higher amp alternator + all new accessories, outweighs the loss of classic appeal... Heck it's an 80s car, might as well use the 80s top of the line technology for the time!

Installed my serpentine setup last Sunday. This has been the BIGGEST single improvement to the car yet. I don't know if it was the age of my accessories, or the inefficiencies of the V belt setup, but now the car runs much smoother through the entire power band. I picked up a few MPG and the car is now a pleasure to drive at low speed around town, or the city here in Boston. A lot of the low speed jerkiness is entirely gone and the engine revs much more freely. I just have to reroute a few lines to make the engine bay cleaner, but I am very happy! I am about ready to choose my EFI setup. I am not sure if I should cheat and get the Powerjection, or get into a MPFI setup.

Looking for tranny advice... I have decided to put off other mods until I can grab hold of a T56... There are a lot of resources here for the swap, but anything else one can suggest? I want this to happen in the next month, before I spend my tax money on something else! Whenever I wallop on the T5 I get case flex, which scares me.

I would honestly just run the T5 til it pops. Go ahead and get a T56 if you want to use some super short gears in the rear end, but dont get too hung up on it til you need it.

Do you KNOW you're getting case flex?

Btw, with my experimentation with T56 hydraulics, I think you should keep your thirdgen pedals and run the T5 hydraulics on the T56. The only issue is the T5 hydraulic line isnt long enough, so if you can source a T56 braided line it should work fine. You may have to drill out the opening in the T5 slave slightly, but 2 seconds with a drill is all you need with that, not a big deal. I can get you the size if you need to know.

I think the T5 hydraulics with thirdgen pedals and longer hydraulic line should keep your clutch feel very similar to what it is now. I am running a Cavalier slave in mine, huge 1.25 inch slave cylinder (stock T56 slave is 11/16's and may not work, the pressure plate was disengaging so far the clutch fork was banging on it when I had mine.) that gives me a VERY soft pedal with engagement just off the floor. Not a bad setup, but I think the T5 slave (1.00 inch) is a better compromise between the stiff pedal, high engagement feel of the T56 slave, and the super soft, floor engagement feel of the Cavalier slave. The master cylinders are the same size for both transmissions.

That should save you a bit of money, actually, if you can figure out how to source some longer hydraulic line. Maybe a shop near you can fab up some? I wish I had my original T56 hydros around... They sell for nearly $200 new from GM.

Thanks for the input... The T5 began to leak soon after I had it rebuilt... Mostly from the rear seal, but a little where the tail shaft bolts on. I payed for it, to be done over again, and it was fine for a few weeks, before it developed the rear seal leak, and more profusely out of the tail shaft area... I am running a poly trans mount, and poly engine mounts... That combined with the roughness of the TrueTrac dif, doesn't seem to make the T5 very happy. I don't really beat on the car, or bang the gears to often, so I figured I would just upgrade... The funny thing is that GM didn't switch over to a hydraulic clutch until 84, so my car has a mechanical linkage with a BIG honkin' spring being an 84. I wonder if I can better seal the tail shaft, but the rear seal leak, is due to vibration I am guessing.

Also I fear for the tranny when I add any more power... It seems on the verge of something bad as it is!

Tomorrow I am fitting my C5 wheels, and new z28 wheels I picked up off another board member to see how they look! The z28 wheels will be nice for cruising, but disregarding looks of the C5 wheels... The extra width should really help my performance down low, and help me stick better... This car really handles with the suspension goodies I have... It'd be nice to feel "safe"? LOL

if i can make any suggestions or give any tips at all, please do not get the professional products PowerJection. that system is terribly unreliable. i know two folks with it here locally, and they both have the same hard start condition when hot.

take a good look at the new msd atomic fuel injection. it's self learning, and should handle the engine you have no problem. it's a pretty ingenious piece.

I like the clean look for now, but maybe some day... My new wheels are going to change the look of the car a lot.

I spent yesterday cleaning every square inch of the entire car... I have noticed the car really likes the warm weather, and runs MUCH stronger when the outside temp is over 60 degrees. I tried a warmer thermostat, but it didn't do much. Then I remembered that my intake manifold has NO exhaust crossover... I think my fuel is not correctly atomizing as it comes out of the carb.

This car may look a little goofy, but it's a racing legend.



And actually, the 82-86 15 inch Z28 wheels were allegedly copied from Ferrari wheels. They're not too far off. And the 85-87 IROCs are pretty much an evolution of those.

Like I said, red car with gold 5 spokes is a pretty classic combination, especially amongst race cars.

If you were talking to me... it depends, I'd love to do it, but I've yet to really find any wheels that I think worth buying. Everything that looks good is too narrow. Or too weak. Or has a BMW bolt pattern. Or it needs spacers... etc etc. I've about given up and decided I'm just going to wait til I get done with school and get some Weld RTS or CCW's.

Depending on what wheels I get, I'd love to do them gold/bronze. I'd even love some gold IROC wheels, but that's money spent on wheels that offer no performance advantage over what I've got.

The IROC wheels were a must for comfortable drive ability... I am not claiming my car is super fast, and what not, but even with the IROC wheels she breaks loose in 3rd, which is why I am getting much bigger wheels all around. Should make her handle a lot better, and I will get a better launch at the track. If you can safely run the stock 15s for the life of your car, it may be a nice driver, but it cant possibly have the power some of us are putting down, because I'd probably be dead by now if I was running those. I would like the Red/gold combo more if my wheels were in OK shape with center caps, but they were very abused by past owners, and were a temporary solution to my problem.

Most drag racers run 15's, though? Larger diameters areb etter for less sidewall flex in cornering and acceleration and braking. But for hard launches in drag racing a smaller diameter is better. Wider is always better in moderation, though.

shoot, i ran the stock 15's for a long time...went into the 12's on those:
