weighed out all the parts for the rotating assembly, just got the rings so tonight I am going balance the crank.
Up and forward turbo headers.
Custom PTC torque convertor
Moved the car to a new temporary home in Leduc this weekend. I have a friend letting me borrow his heated garage.
Started to strip the car for paint and clean up the wiring.
going through all the wiring under the dash

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
We have seen failures caused from abnormal wear in the outer sheel from the rubber rings in the aluminum shell ATI's. Everything we build has a steel shell on it, the crack was in the hub and just starting to form from the edge of the keyway. I am not worried about the 4-5 HP I may be leaving on the table when I will have anywhere between 800 and 1500 on tap with the push of a button.

Finally got to balance the crank...
Also set the crank in the block and checked rotating clearance.
new manual rack and pinion to shave some more weight out of the car...
Pulled apart the 9" to change the gears

Had to do some clearancing to the block and belt drive plate to make it sit flush on the block.
New aeromotive Eliminator fuel pump installed in place of the A-1000, and fuel pump controller wired in.
[/URL]
Checked rod bearing clearance with the calico coated bearings. Had to go to a X bearing. Got the rods and pistons assembled aswell.

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
Started installing the new front suspension this weekend...
Goodbye to the horrible trick springs, swapped out for a much lighter coil over setup.
Stock k-member out, getting swapped out for a much lighter tubular unit, A-arms also getting changed for some units without spring pockets to shave more weight.
Poor quality pic of the dusty k-member installed lol
Went to installed the coil overs in the caster camber plate and realized once the nut was tight, the the taper on the top of the coil over would bottom out against the strut mount, limiting the movement of the bearing in the strut mount...
5 minutes on the lathe and problem solved...
Also dropped the pan on the transmission and installed the lokar locking dipstick.
New S&W Anti roll bar.
Also finished up the machine work on the block and got it washed and ready for final assembly.

Spring is in the air! When do you anticipate your first dyno session? (Assuming you'll run this engine on a stand before you install)

I dont intend on running the engine on the engine dyno. Gonna put it in the car and run it on the chassis dyno.
Got my new ADE LS-3 coil mounts
Made some more progress...
Cam bearings installed.
Fresh coat of gloss black paint.
Cam installed, main bearing clearance done, ready to drop the crank in.
Crank in and mains torqued
Belt drive assembled
Degreeing the cam.
Test fit pan and pump. Head just arrived back today to I am going to check piston to valve clearance and assemble the shortblock.

Once I build mounts and install it I will have more info.
Got the heads back yesterday, so I was able to perform the last bit of checks before assembling the shortblock.
Checking brow clearance on the pistons
Checking piston to valve clearance
Filing the piston rings, gaps are 0.030" on the top and second ring as per total seal.
Assembled shortblock.

Mocked up my crank trigger/drive mandrel and pulleys for the drysump pump last night.
also got a 3d drawing of my new billet intake. This gives a pretty close idea of what the finished product will look like.

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
Most progress and parts.
New HP EFI system showed up.
26x8.5" slicks mounted up (I plan on running a local outlaw 8.5" class)
Oil pan sealed up and O-ring wires installed
Valve job cut.
Blending the valve job, and cleaning up some of the CNC porting.
Ready for heads.
I wanted to see how the headers fit, so I dropped the heads on and bolted them up. Should clear with no issues in between my strut towers.

Moved the car into its new home which is much closer to me.
Had the cage certified to run 8.50's
Got the new rear gears installed and the rear end back together and ready to go under the car.
Front bumper and chin spoiler ready to go to paint.
Been working on a bunch of the little stuff in the car.
- Parachute handle
- ECM mount
- Window net
- Meth tank and pump
- CO2 bottle mount

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
Question for you, just read through your build, nice job by the way, I have a Camaro drag car with a Pontiac headed 406, the block is filled, no way can I drive it on the street, it would for sure over heat with very little water running through the block. now I read and correct me if I am wrong, did I not read that this will be street/strip car, if so how do you plan on keeping that engine cool enough with block filler in it, or am I thinking of another engine you built for this car. I tell ya, I have only seen one other person swap/change is mind on what he wanted in the car, my buddy is like this!
Another question, why fuel injected and why turbos? I am pretty sure you mentioned in the beginning you where a carb guy, I am only asking to see what made /got you to change your mind?
post car dyno numbers when you get them, I'm interested in this engine when its finished!

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
We have lots of local cars that have zero issues with a filled block and cooling on the street. I went turbos because you cannot beat the power capability of the turbos and still have the car driveable on the street. I went efi because blow through carbs are the most useless thing ive ever seen. Efi is a no brainer to me.

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
Update.... wiring and more wiring...
everything is soldered and heatshrink, but butt connectors anywhere. may not be the nicest but there was a lot of wiring to run and tie together between the EFI, gauges, digital shift light, fuel pump controller, meth system, Holley EFI, Boost leash boost controller/pulse leash combo, transbrake, neutral safety etc... while still keeping the lights and whatnot fully functional. The Holley EFI has internal datalogging which has been tied into a input on the ECM so I can trigger it when driving. Both gauge panels were wired on weatherpack connectors so they can be easily removed.
Dash back in.
Boost controller fired up.
Powered up the car, set the inputs/outputs for the various functions, configured the parameters for igntion and uploaded a rough tune to fire the car once the time comes.
LS-3 coils mounted, along with the dipstick, vacuum manifold, various relay etc....

two separate downpipes with no crossover. I'd run a O2 in every cylinder if I had a economical way to log it. lots of money for a race pak.

Starting converting the intake for EFI...
Intake elbow ported for the Wilson 95mm throttle body.
Intake port work roughed in.
Anti-roll bar ready to bolt in.
Finally got all the correct bolts and spacers for the front drive mandrel, crank trigger and alternator and got all that mounted aswell.

Mine is 1 3/4" aswell and I just use a bit of brake clean to lubricate it going on and once it dries it doesn't want to come off. The hose is just a stock 86 camaro carbureted hose.

Re: My 1986 Z-28 build thread *PIC HEAVY*
Thanks for that. I haven't been able to find a lower hose with 1 3/4" on both ends. My old stocker was 1 3/4" on the pump and 1 1/2" on the rad. Still looking.
Same with the upper ( 1 1/2" on both ends) but I found a sweet hose that has only one small bend in it that fits with a small trim. I imagine your turbos would get in the way of that one though.
PM sent.

Bungs welded in
Starting to machine for the injectors
injectors bungs machined. These are the Bosch 160lb/hr injectors I am going to run.
Fuel rails stands fit and welded on
Made some more progress on the intake porting, the plenum is nearly done.
Rails bolted on.
