700R4 Rebuild, What skill level is required?

I would like to try to rebuild my tranny myself to save some money and to learn more about it. I have mechanical aptitude (above average but not like some of you guys) and the drive to learn new stuff. I can rebuild motors, and do most other things on cars. The only things I havent tried are rearends and Tranny's. Is this something I could do or would it be over my head?

If you've done a motor, I think you'd be fine. See if you can find an auto parts store that sells the Haynes Techbooks. I bought the one called "GM Transmission Overhaul"- it covers the TH-350, TH-200-4R, TH-400, and TH-700r4. The book gives a picture-by-picture rebuild of the 700r4! There's only a handful of tools to buy, some of which you probably already have from rebuilding engines.

For a tech aspect, if you don't have the GM Service Manual (Helms) for your car, buy an ATSG (auto trans service group) manual. It's basically the in-depth transmission chapter from the GM service manual. However, at the end, the ATSG manual shows all the latest service bulletins and parts info! That way you can put the "updated" parts into your trans. My ATSG book cost me $16 from http://www.northernautoparts.com . They make an 82-86 book and an 87-up book.

Rebuilding my trans is something I'd like to do this summer. Er, well, I mean rebuilding a junkyard trans. I need my car in the meantime!

Oh, okay, I talked myself into it. Here's the link for the Haynes books: http://www.haynes.com/na2.html Here's the link for the ATSG books: http://transbuilder.com/store.html (Click at the top on "books", then click at the left on "atsg 1"). Buy the book from http://www.northernautoparts.com ; it's cheaper.
