Alternator noise... tried everything

Alternator noise... tried everything
Its not bad, just enough to hear when playing soft music or light volume. I've got a good ground, RCA's are on one side, power cable's on the other side, they only come together for a small section and this is the ONLY thing I can think introducing this noise. The problem is, they come together where the amps are, and they're mounted into the seat, so pulling that apart is OUT of the question.
The amps are screwed into WOOD, so there is no chance for a ground loop.
I have the stock timing and distribution system.. NO MSD or any aftermarket system.
In a car audio book that I bought a while ago they suggest wiring a capacitor (about .5 microfarads and non electrolytic) into the power output of my alternator then grounding the other side of the cap. Well, Radio Shack doesn't have the cap that I need and no audio store sells one specifically made for this application. Other solutions they suggest are various line noise eliminators that are supposed to work better but I've seen nothing in any audio store like this.
Has anybody done this, heard of it, or know of a better way to eliminate this noise???

I know how much of an annoyance this can be and how much of a pian it can be to isolate the problem.
try this, start the car turn the radio on where the noise can be heard then disconect the alt wires just the plug in and see if it goes away. If the noise goes away when the alt is disconected the you can guarente thats the problem. The loom inside the alternator is loose or a diode is failing.
You could replace the alternator but it might not fix the problem entirely. You might want to tray a cheap noise filter. Scoshie<-- I belevive is the cheapest, "wall mart Kmart" and they seem to work well.
If the noise doesent go away then its the actual stereo equiptment and becomes complicated to chase down the problem as you know
