You mean you are rebuilding the tranny? And yea its kinda weird having another car I feel like I am cheating on the camaro and to make it even worse with an import
Yea its just easier that way all i have to do is machine the heads to fit the intake and it runs with more torqe and power than stock wich is better than no extra power. Plus TPI magnifies low end torqe by alot so it will feel more powerfull than carbed. that and TPI is what makes an 89 an Iroc so why get rid of what made it what it is?
cause tpi dont flow too good esp on a 400. tpi was designed for the 305 HSR will give u lot more power all over the power band. that's what i would get. (just i have 2.77 gears )

Hey BLACK ICE! - Honestly, I didn't know machine work would be required to run a 400 with TPI. If that's the case, then going carb might be the cheaper way to go. It would be neat to have a TPI 400 though!!
Due to rod angularity on the 400's, it's always wiser (and cheaper) to build a 400 for low to mid range TQ and HP. And that's the range TPI is built for. Thus the name "Tuned Port".
Of course other mods may be needed like bigger injectors, ported runners etc..
You already know I'm partial to carbs though, and I'm no expert on TPI.
"It will feel more powerful than carbed"?? Now you're gonna hurt my feelings!! .....
If the stealth ram is what you mean by hsr then you will be happy cause that is what I am saving up to get.I just want to stay tuned port so I dont have to convert to carbed and back over to fi when I get the stealth ram. Confuzed one I have had carbs and I have had throttle bodie and now I have tuned port AS far as stock setups the tuned port has been very impressive as far torque and as far as cost efficiency it would be better to stay with what I was impressed with rather than convert to something else when that is not going to be the final intake setup. I do not need lots of high rpm power to drive on the street so I am not worried about chocking my motor.I dont have alot of money so this will be an ongoing project and I want to keep my car running trough the majority of its building cause I cant stand seeing it sit cause cars are meant for driving especialy the ones that are fun to drive
O-yea something about water jackets or ports or something in the heads and bolt angles require machining to use the tuned port on a 400sbc remember 400s are an earlier block and the heads where upgraded on sbc 2 times beetween the 400 times and the tpi times.
Ya sorta, we got the rest of it apart and its got some issues. Not worth the time to write it all down except that I got lucky and the transmission shop on the south side needs some work done around the shop and in trade they will replace the gears and rebuild it for me.
Thats sweet you must have some connections to get a sweet deal like that. Maybe I should do some stuff like that to get my car on the road Im gonna call some shops tommorrow maybe I will get lucky! If not for work on my car at least for some $$$$$!

Denny, aka lafn at u is putting together a show at his place south of Chicago Memorial day weekend. Some of us from Milw are trying to put together a caravan to go down there...anyone interested?
hey sorry i havent been on in a while. life gets busy sometimes. im fighting to get my car to pass emissions. i have failed 3 times.
i have a 305 tpi with shorty headers and a crane cam fireball ignition running msd wires and bosch 4's.
the first time up i failed hc by .034 abd nox by 2.4. so i checked the egr it was pretty carboned up so i put a new one in and put a new cap and rotor in. my emissions got worse. my friend has a checker so we hooked it up and i got a coolant temp sensor fault. so i put a new sensor in. went and got checked and my emissions got worse. honestly that really confuses me. so i thought about about it, maybe the O2 is bad, so i threw a new one in and my friend said to try with the fireball ignition disconnected. so hopefully today it passes.
on other subjects, i cant wait for the spring. im really getting anxious to get up to the track. i want to see how my car does in the 1320. and to be able to keep my car clean for more than a day. later
Bryce
Man that sucks you would think the more money you put into a car the more it should pass. Sounds kina silly but check the pressure on the gas cap. It is more of a 4th gen problem but it can happen to thirds too! I have heard a few stories about camaros that wont pass emmisions and no one can figure out why and that turns out to be the problem!
Now on to my car! The block I am getting from one of my old bosses he said no knocks or cracks and they run good (I have a couple to choose from) He has one with 60 miles on a rebuild but the motor was built wrong and seized up from lack of oil. The other 3 are just stock so I will take the one with the lest miles unless one of them is newer with decent miles.
I have not pulled my heads yet so no I havent started porting them yet. Still kinda scared to f*ck somthing up.
Do you think I should put new bearings and rings in the new motor and do the port work or wait untill I get my stealth ram?
That's cool, maybe you'll find a good one with low miles, also I got my truck back and running again.. as it normally goes for me, its not the same but i don't care, i have it back.

When you say you will take the low milage one, that leads me to believe the seized up one????
Dude!!! - I'd take one of the other three you said he has. No telling what damage you'd find on a seized engine. What caused it? Crank might need turned, due to damage or ...etc...Cylinders gouged bad...who knows?? Could be costly.
And yeah, if it looks good, I'd get a gasket kit and bearings. Both crank and rod. So long as no bearings have spun in thier bore, and the journals look good it would nice to just replace them with standards. If ya can afford it, get the heads gone over by a machine shop. Don's did mine.

The heads are where the power is. A little bowl blending will waken up whatever cam you put in it. It'll work even better whenever you do get a stealth ram...
No no no not the sized one that one would be free if I wanted it but I dont want it. Why take on another problem? no I was gonna go thru the other three and decide!Sorry if I confuzed you guys.
On a good note, I passed emissions with flying colors. I was putting in for Collector's plates, and they came in the mail a week ago.
But in order to apply, I had to send my ORIGINAL title along with the application. So I got the plates, then I realize - "Hey!! Where's my title and registration???"
I called, and of course- they said they should have been here BEFORE I got the plates.....so I guess thier lost in the mail....
....Or they weren't sent.
But they could never make that kind of mistake!!..
So now I have to send these people a "signed" letter stating I didn't recieve them. WHAT?? Do they think I want to call and try and get 2 titles for my car?? Why would I lie?? OK - done now.
If you see a 83Z in primer with collector plates, it's most likely me.
well i ended up taking my car to the dealer to have them check it out and get it to pass. they told me the reason its failing is cause there are oversized injectors in it. now this is something i am unaware of. the seller of the car didnt mention that. so now i have to get the numbers off the injectors and try to figure out how big they are. well they got it to pass but they said they detuned it and took it through. i tryed asking if he could show me what he did, but the dealer would have have it. he said you could come back next time and he could do it again. yah right.
anybody have a clue what he could have adjusted.
thanks
My buddy has the same problem with his 92 GTA. The way he was told GM used some of the leftover Corvette parts on a few of the lucky 91-92 TPI Camaros and T/As. He also has to have his car detuned to get it to pass. When you check your injectors see if they belong in a vette maybe you got one of the lucky cars
corvette injectors?? the dealer said they were aftermarket but couldnt tell me what kind. i do not know if i should believe him. were is the part numbers on the injectors. i took a quick look and didnt see any. the only thing i could tell you about them is they have a grey upper section. hopefully i could figure this out. not to sound like i am asking a stupid question but what is the difference between a camaro injector and a corvette injector. i didnt know they put 305's in vettes. but isnt a injector just a injector? thanks
I dunno... I think there most likely aftermarket injectors someone put on it.
Whole thing sounds fishy to me. Not telling you what injectors are in there?? I would think a better shop would get the numbers off the injectors you have in it now, let you know what size they are vs. what size you should have and give you a estimate on what it cost to fix.
Won't tell you how he "detuned" it to make it pass?? Again, seems crooked. Go somewhere else. Just MO...
Not whole motors just parts! some 91-92s got leftover parts. I did some studying and that rumor appears to be true for injectors and runners. Not sure what makes them different but there is supposed to be a performance plus which would mean a factory freak car. As for the whole passing emmisions thing my buddy with the gta says they put hotter plugs in it and retard the timing he said it runs like crap until he brings it back in to get tuned up again he has a set of plugs just for emmisions he brings them in and the shop does thier "magic" .
well LEMAY did the work.
just as a reminder i am new to domestic v8's. so if it sounds like i am asking a stupid question its not im just nieve. i can talk importese fluently though. other that this injector problem my big concern it this spring when GLDW opens up. my friends are all running turbo cars. both hitting over 20 psi. one is a conquest and the other is a turbo jetta. i cant get slattered. what are some free or cheap mods that i could do. i need every hp. i want to knock there socks off. this is what im working with.
305 tpi 700r4 w/ 111,000
crane came hi-6 ignition w/ coil
msd wires
mac exhaust w/ high flow cat
shorty headers
2200 b&m stall converter
and b&m shift kit
the (oversized) injectors
i only have acouple of months to get ready. so any help ill be thankfull.
Well, I don't know what type of power a Conquest or Jetta turbo puts out, but you may have an uphill battle.
What rear gears you running? You more than likely make more torque than either of them. If you can get a good jump on them off the line, it should help.
Lemay huh?? Well, if they got my car to pass emissions, and then not tell me what they did to make it pass like it's some kind of secret, I'd have a problem with that!! Especially for as much as they charge!
WELL THE JETTA HAS AT LEAST 240 HP AND ABOUT THE SAME WITH TORQUE. THE CONQUEST IS AT LEAST 250 HP AND OVER 300 LBS OF TORQUE. IF I CANT BEAT THEM I AT LEAST WANT TO HANG CLOSE TO THEM. THE CONQUEST IS A MANUAL SO HE HAS TO BE CARE OR HE SMOKES HIS TIRES.
I NEVER GOT A CHANCE TO SEE THE MECHANIC JUST THE FRONT GUY. AND DUE TO CURRENT EVENTS I HAVENT BEEN ABLE TO GET BACK OVER THERE TO ASK.
BUT STILL ,IS THERE A LIST POSTED OF ALL THE FREE MODS?
I HAVE TRIED THE SEARCH BUT ICOMES UP WITH LIKE A THOUSAND OF HITS. I DONT HAVE THAT MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS.
Interesting with the injectors thing. I don't know much about getting power from tune port, I know there is some 7 page article that says how to get more power from TPI systems, all I remember is raising the fuel pressure. Drop a 454 bored out to .30 and put twin tubros on and then complain about not hookin up. Ya that costs to much money and time, which nobody I know have both.
funny how you mention that twin turbo thing. i know a guy who is a welder who would make me the pipiing to go twin turbo cheap. just need the two turbos, copper head gaskets, and a larger radiator, plus a few hoses here and there. the 305 has 8.something compression right? that perfect for boost. but i dont have the $$$ right now which sucks. then comes the question about emissions. ohh wait then there are the injectors and fuel pump. thats more $$$. ohh crap nevermind
Ya I wanted to try the twin tubro thing out, I had a guy that was going to get me the two tubros and a big enoght intercooler for like $500. Then i started thinkin about all the work that would be and the injection process. The tubing and welding is something i could do on my own so that wasn't a problem.
Wasn't done yet, I wanted to say you could try Nitrous, they say a 100hp shot is safe on a stock motor. Check out the Power adder section , they got good info on Nitrous if ya find it.
Ok last year it looks like BLUE 86 TA tried to set up some meets but nothing happened maybe this year I will try. Lrts try to set up some weekly meets at the wendys car shows and maybe start a car club. Who all is interested. I can have t-shirts made and probly some small rear window stickers that can be put on the sides of the back window that can be veiwed from the sides of the car. any body that would like to get involved please reply so I can start organizing to have this in full swing and well planned by this summer. lets say its open to anybody in the Southeastern WI-Northeastern ILL area that owns a thirdgen. We could set up cruises and trips to the dragstrip ect. Im also open to other ideas. If this gets a lot of replys I will move it to its own thread.
Guess i didn't tell ya BlackIce, but the Kenosha Car club people got kicked out of wendy's if i remember right. As of now i don't know where they will be meeting up at. When i find out I will let ya know, there was talk about something at BlockBuster.
Hey i've update the webpage and I got more updates coming so go and check it out.
