is there a set price the illinois dmv has for sales tax on a used car? the car in question is a 2006. i am debating driving to florida to pick it up or have it shipped. if i pick it up i have to pay the florida 7% sales tax- if i have it shipped- i don't. they are telling me that if i pay the florida sales tax- all i have to do is show my paperwork to the illinois dmv- and i won't have to pay the illinois tax. for some reason i was thinking illinois had a flat rate for used vehicles? any ideas if that's the case or what the charge is?

i am kinda curious to see how this all pans out. my bank tells me one thing and the dmv tells me another. either way-even if i do have to pay a percentage- illinois is cheaper than florida- so that's where i am paying it. i would rather pay the flat rate- but i don't know if that's going to happen or not.
is that for private party or dealer? where did you get this info? i keep talking to wackos at the dmv who don't seem to know what they are talking about. i get a different story every time i call.
ain't that a b!tch. $30k on a 2006- looks like "the man" is gonna cost me another $40/mo because of the sales tax. what a crock of shat. i even get taxed on the money I am putting down.

When you go to transfer the title and get your plates or transfer your plates is when you pay the tax. If you get this done at a currency exchange or bank you will pay them a service fee to take your paperwork to the secretary of states office(some banks do it for free for their own customers). You can go to the SOS yourself and save a few bucks, usually around $20-25 depending where you are.
Last car I did was $196 for title, plates and the minimum $25 tax thru the local currency exchange.
If you buy your car through a dealership, expect to pay county sales tax also.
