1987 Firebird Formula - what to offer?

I ran across a 1987 Firebird Formula, 305, auto, t tops, for sale locally and not by a member of this board for $900. It has 170xxxmiles, i was told by the owner that the fuel injection has been removed and replaced with an Edelbrock carb, painted primer black, driver's door is slightly dented, improperly seated and a replacement ( manual window vs. power on passenger), headliner drooping in places, and wing removed from back. Original color was yellow, which can still be seen inside of doors, dirtyish interior, but very little rust. Motor seems smooth, but owner says it smokes a little when quickly accelarated.

I don't want to insult the guy, and I think he's been honest about the problems (then again, he has only owned it for two months) but I think that $900 is high. What would seem a fair offer? Or should I run from it?

I am not mechanically oriented, but a mechanic friend of mine owes me about $1,000 and would do the work and parts for free, but he doesn't paint.

Thanks for all replies.

i would agree just because its the edelbrock, but a holley would be a totally different story.

Most importantly, get down on your hands and knees and look under the whole car and make sure its not rusted to hell. And if you have to pass emissions, the carb wont do it.
