How about a meet tomorrow? That storm shifted, and its going to pass a couple hundred miles above us, its supposed to be partly cloudy all day tomorrow with a 20% chance of rain.

ooooooh So you do automotive painting?

How much would it be to paint my Iroc if i did all the prep work and bought all the supplies. I just need an experienced painter to spray it and bake it or wet sand it or whatever. I don't even know all the processes, i just know anything beyond getting it ready for paint is above my skill level.

Not sure to be honest. I don't have a paint booth or anything. I just work out of the bus garage where I work. Mostly I just do small jobs for friends and co-workers. I'm trying to talk the boss into a paint booth but he doesn't seem to want to go for it. I could take a look at it sometime and maybe figure something out.

well, we were thinking of renting a booth anyways and trying to spray it ourselves or have someone spray it. It's already black, and we're painting it black, so no color changes to worry about.

And i can do everything all the way up to rolling it into the booth. From tehre on im stuck!

That doesn't sound too difficult. I might be able to help. I just don't like coming up with a price. It always seems too expensive to me but thats probably because I never have to pay someone to do it I guess. When were you planning to get it done?

Re: PIttsburgh

If any of you guys remember that 355 4-bolt main of my buddies that i was trying to sell, he needs the cash. New price is $700 OBO, and this should be a very recently rebuilt engine. Must go ASAP. Kinda wish i didn't have the L98, or I'd buy it. Maybe i still will

anyways, move fast cause there were offers even at $1000.

edit: on a more personal note, anyone know a good engine shop for my L98? I just want to get it boiled/cleaned, bored, and balanced for cheap for a 355. I can't do the 383 on my budget .

oh, and Orr, you burn proms right? How much do u charge per burn, because I am 99.9% sure i'll need at LEAST a prom with the new cam, cubes, and hopefully heads. Maybe some new 1.6 rockers too

dont give up man! its only a few hundred bucks more, depending on who clearances the block. machine work on a 383 will be like 500 bucks compared to like 300-400 for a 350 cleanup. rotating kits are the same price so do 383 You could get a shortblock for around/under 1500 i'd say.

Yes i can do proms for MAF cars. I dont know SD well enough but i could figure it out with time. I wouldnt charge anything except you have to buy the adapter and chip which is 55 bucks. I'll do the rest for you.

I still dont know if i'm gonna change heads yet or not. I kinda like the nitrous feel. I may just change intakes and go with slightly larger shot for next year. i just dont know if i want to swing into the turbo idea yet. 10 second car is pretty quick... haha i dont know if i'm ready for more yet

Wow.. Are they really only $100-200 more??? What about the price of the 383 pistons (isn't the wrist pin further into the piston?), and then you can do the 6" rods if you want (what does that do to clearance anyways). A month ago i said i would do the 383 if it was less than $200 more. /thinking.

Is it really only $200 more? I know you built a 383 so you should know... /ponders

And my car is still a MAF car so that's fine, although I'm trying to figure out how i can ram more air in there for cheap. Also, what chip? I have the original L98 chip and computer. When i said i got the L98 from plenum to pan for $200, i meant it. It included all vacuum lines and electronics. Working. FOR $200!!

And i understand on the heads. I actually would be surprised if you got rid of them personally, even just because it's just too perfect for me . What kinda intake and shot you thinking?

edit: This article http://www.compcams.com/Community/Ar...?ID=1945664039
has me thinking maybe the 383 provides more of a performance gain than i thought.

coupled with this: http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/383-...osts-3797.html
which, at least as far as i can tell, supports what you said,

has me really thinking I can't give up yet! What's an extra $200 while you're already into the nitty-gritty anyways?

Re: PIttsburgh

check it out man

the price difference you pay is roughly the block machining. I had a quote done for me when i was gonna use my stock block but i cant remember what it was. I think its 200 bucks or less for clearancing. Depends on how much is needed. I think its not much more than 100.

For internal balance 1 pc blocks the price of a 383 is a touch higher, but normally its same price just about

Eagle stuff

5.7/6" rod 383 crank, cast steel for our blocks 300 bucks
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...I&autoview=sku

same crank for 355 is 190, 110 bucks more there. add 100-200 in machining depending the cost is roughly 200-300 higher for a 383 for a 1pc rms block

Pricing will depend where you get stuff.

scats 9000 series lightweight 383 stroker crank is $231 depending where you get it

Rods are the same price for 5.7 or 6 inch and those can be used on 350 or 383s

pistons are slightly different. 6inch rod raises the price alittle bit for the piston. Keith black 383 piston with 1/16 , 1/16, 3/16 rings are 260. Same piston for 355 is 240. But you can get a 355 piston with 5/64 rings for 190, so you could save abit of money there

Also if your stock crank is in good order, you can save some money there and do a budget 355

All in all the cost of a 1pc rear main 383 over a 355 will be closer to 300-400 probly but again depends on what you get.

I think 300 is worth the extra cubes for power and torque.

CHIP, you have to buy moates.net G1 adapter that comes with 2 chips for 55 bucks

I was going to do this crank:
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...L&autoview=sku

from Scat. I wouldn't buy from eagle due to their customer service. When i was researching bottom ends a few months back, i was in contact with both Scat and Eagle. Eagle took a week or more to reply to e-mails and even then the e-mail hardly ever answered my question. Scat, however, e-mailed me back within 15 minutes. By the same time the next day, every single one of my questions had been answered, I really liked the answers, and they had sent me a big thick envelope with their catalog and a bunch of stickers in it for 100% free. That's why I will only buy from Scat .

I was going to go with Forged 5.7 summit rods (probably Stage 1) and forged pistons with somewhere between 10:1 and 10.7:1 compression (still researching those. Any fav brand of yours? Mahle's seem sexy but Speed Pro looks like the best deal).

my stock crank is indeed in good condition, but with 166k+ miles on it, I really don't want to take the chance. Especially when i can get a brand new cast crank for so little.

Re: PIttsburgh

well if you get forged stuff the price evens out more. i think forged pistons are same price for both setups. I got SRP pistons in mine with forged eagle crank/eagle h beam rods.

Scat is fine. that crank is fine. Says for use with 5.7 rod, but i think you can use a 6" with the right piston. But you'd have to check that. Its not 100% necessary to run 6" rod but its nice to keep piston speeds down with better rod/stroke ratio.

I would buy scat's I beam rods with 7/16 cap screw. Those are a good deal for the money and hold 500-550 hp or more if you keep rpms down. i almost got those for my motor but i spent the extra 150 for h beams

SRP was one of the pistons i had targetted in my research. Are you happy with them?

The Scat was for the 5.7 rod, which is fine because that's what i was gonna get, and i tried to somewhat match it to my engine.

from an e-mail from scat:
"To answer your question, Scat's 9000 series crankshafts are Cast Steel. we use our exclusive space-age 9000 material. and they are rated up to 600 hp for small block motors, and 700hp for big blocks!"

That was the $231 crank. So ~600 hp safety in the crank, and 500-550 for the rods, and, well, you can't get any better than forged pistons. I feel that should safely handle my ~400 HP and ~450 TQ with plenty of room to spare if my build passes expectations or if i just want to spray some nitrous for fun. Matched to a TKO-600 with 600 ft lbs of safety, I shouldn't have any problems running hard to ~6500 RPM.

for rods i was thinking either
http://tinyurl.com/42qb2s
or
http://tinyurl.com/4ohuux

personally, those Stage 2 rods look like they'll best match my crank, though they don't show up when i click "clearance for stroker" so who knows. Ideas?

Re: PIttsburgh

thats gonna be a big thing to look out for. clearance around the cam with different rods. You may need a small base circle cam.

Not a big deal tho, probly just a few more bucks tho.

For my goals next year, i may shoot for high 10's on motor and 9's on spray using EFI single plane. If that be the case i may sell my heads and possibly cam for a different setup, but we will see. I like this cam and wasnt looking forward to pulling motor for all that jazz.

But if i do i could sell you my whole top end, heads/cam/hsr/tune haha. That work great for you

But like i said i dont know yet.

if you could i'd try the scat rods over summits. I like the 300 dollar scat I beam with 7/16 bolt. That be a strong rod, should handle 500-550 hp easily. 600 if you keep rpms below 6200

I may not be around this weekend so Irwin may not happen for me but i'll let you know

yea I e-mailed scat and they told me that if anything the crank will break before that rod does. Well not in those words but that's what i picked up . Jegs has it for $288 for all 8 so i'll do that with the $231 scat crank. That'll be good and strong with some forged pistons up top.

How much for the entire topend you think. It maybe be extremely temping. Plus i think the first system that i really wanted would still match the tune and cam of the HSR well enough to get a baseline if i still want to do it.

/pondering.

What cam you have in there anyways? What's your RPM band? I was shooting for maybe 1300-6300 or so and shift at maybe 6500 with torque out the a** due to the torquey 383 and first setup combined.

edit: OH! and the sexy part about Scat, their rods are "clearanced for strokers". Which partly means that you can use a standard base circle cam. It says so right on their website.

Re: PIttsburgh

this is all too early to tell since i have to find out if the cam and block/ring gaps will support a planned 250shot. It may not be necessary to swap out the cam and heads if the HSR is actually holding me back which i dont really think it is. I'd love to try the single plane on this motor first to see if it picks up. If it does then i may not need to swap stuff.

Else i will have to look into slightly different cam and maybe comp port 195's or something that will work. Getting a 383 to hit near 10's on motor will be tough i think. A 250 shot is pretty large too, i may be over my head.

taking this convo to AIM

Is that the one in Robinson? That's the only S/S i can think of, and Robinson is about half the distance for me from Irwin.
