rear wheel bearings bad? help me out my 3rd gen brothers
Is it possible for both my rear wheel bearings to be bad? when i jacked my car up and moved my tire side to side it moves alot . on both sides. i notice it when iam going slow around corners to... this rear end is not a factory unit it is a 12 bolt posi unit. that was swapped in with my 350.
it shifts fine. no problems with that . its just the movemant and it makes a clunking noise when i move the tires in and out on both tires????????? I figured i would ask here first. thanx let me know please
Re: rear wheel bearings bad? help me out my 3rd gen brothers
could be the C-clips and or cross pin is worn out. No big deal to replace. The C-clips are on the end of the axle inside the rear end. I'm sure lots of info and pics on this site and all over the net as to what the setup looks like and how to replace them. Pretty much a normal wear type of item on a 12 bolt...

the c clips hold the axels into the chunk. the cross pin holds the axels apart so they cannot go in too far. if they are worn out then both axels will move together.
how much is alot????
does it clunk when you go around corners? or forward and backwards?
Re: rear wheel bearings bad? help me out my 3rd gen brothers
it doesnt clunk unless i pull on the tire . it does it on both sides? but when i did it today the noise was coming from the punkin. its almost like my rear end has a locker or something. I have no issues with it shifting at all just when i go around a corner at like 10 mph it feels like the tires are grabbing ? ? I fear iam gonna have to pull the cover off
Re: rear wheel bearings bad? help me out my 3rd gen brothers
don't fear the cover. thats an easy part. then you can see if it has a locker, a spool, or if someone made a lincoln locker. its also a good way to see whats wrong, and if you have any question to what gear ratio you have you can find out then.
the nice part is you can see just about everything you need without having to undo anything(other than the cover) and you can put it back on and be driving again in no time
it will cost you about 15 bux or so for the fluid and you might need the posi additive if you don't get the gear oil with the additive in it.
Re: rear wheel bearings bad? help me out my 3rd gen brothers
ok I talked to the guy i bought the car from he did confirm it has a detroit locker in it with 411 gears and a shift kit . i dont understand why when it is a 12 bolt rear end but thats beside the point . would the locker cause that play iam getting? and the noise in the punkin. i googled it and some people said they get the same thing. is it normal??
Re: rear wheel bearings bad? help me out my 3rd gen brothers
now is this a aftermarket rearend? did someone build it in their backyard? i am now wondering if someone did a c clip eliminator kit on it. do you have drum or disk?
Re: rear wheel bearings bad? help me out my 3rd gen brothers
it has drums in the back. the car was being built for a drag car bye a father and son as a project. thats all i know. the motor and tranny are built and he told me the rear end was done to with the 411 gears. which aint good street gears i might add. I drove it to the store and back and i can tell u this when i hit the gas it lifts the front end. iam wondering if i should put differant shocks on the back?? while iam at it
