She's mechanically sound, but in need of some body work (miscellaneous dings, horrible paint, but only a tiny bit of minor surface rust). So I'm now officially an Ohio third gen owner. Can't wait to start putting some blood, sweat, and tears* into her getting her shipshape.
*And, alas, cash, too, I'm sure. |

Car: '88 Formula Engine: 5.0 TBI Transmission: T5 | Re: Ohio? Me? For now, no. The car only has 100,000 miles, and the 305 actually runs strong (well, as strong as a 305 can). I'm kind of taking an "if it ain't broke" attitude right now, although headers and a cat-back are on the horizon.
For now, the priorities are (1) body, since it looks bad at anything less than 20 paces, and minor surface rust can turn into serious cancer really quickly around here; (2) subframe connectors. |

Amen to that. I'm resurrecting a 92 that's been sitting for 4 or 5 years. And with no money to spend, it's quite a challenge. You should see the paint damage! It makes me shudder. |

I just reregistered my car today and got insurance yesterday and you wont believe what just happened.
I went for a little cruise and got pulled over at a dui check point so im thinking this is no biggie since i dont drink and drive. Wrong. I put my new temp tags in the window and didnt think twice about removing the old plate since the new one that was being mailed to me was the same plate (1fstgta). Bastards game me a ticket for "display of plates" but thats not all. My speedo has a short in it so it turns off from time to time so i had my laptop running next to me so i could see how fast i was going (aldl still reads speed). I explained this to them and they gave me another ticket for "attention of operation". Then they threatened to tow my car but finally let me go with a court date of 6-10-08. I am so frustrated right now and i just had to vent somewhere. |

and hecks yes, we need a thirdgen fest in ohio. i remeber one time i was driving to the bloomington gold show (i also have a corvette) and i saw a good thirty or so thirdgens goin down the highway and it looked amazing. id be willing to work to get one going if i knew enough people were gonna come. |

So question then. I'm looking to get historical plates on my '83 now that its eligible. I was wondering if anyone else has done this or has another car with historical plates.
I wanted to know how strict they are about not being for general transportation and only for shows, parades, etc. I would imagine it is just used for an extra fine if i get a ticket doing 150mph. especially considering the Ohio bmv even says the phrase isn't explicitly defined. but I don't want to get the plates if i'll never get to drive my car legally.
i looked into collector plates b/c the driving is more loosely defined but it seems like too much work to keep registered considering how little i drive it.
THANKS. |

Well, it gives the cops one more out to pull you over and be d!cks. my 62 yr old father got a stern talking to by an old statie while we were getting the GTA inspected, saying that he had his car (fully restored 1970 dodge charger R/T w/440) out for illegal reasons and that he would let him slide this time but ticket him the next time he saw him, my dad said he followed me to get gas, and the guy said he didn't care next time he's going to ticket him, to which my father replied, how the hell's the car work if i can't get gas for it,, and the statie said you can get gas, on your way to or from a parade or show only.
that guy was literally murdered by bees two months later, stung him to death. maybe he pulled one over...

THANKS. | I have a friend who has "Collector" plates on one of his cars, and he drives it all the time.it's plated for ohio, but he works in D.C., so he puts some serious miles on it when he comes to visit. I emailed him to ask if he has restrictions on the allotted miles. I'm also part of an organization that has a 69 Cadillac Hearse with Historical plates, and we drive that thing fairly often(well, we did, before it died), and have never gotten pulled over for it.
As far as getting hassled about going to car shows or what ever, I'm not sure, but I doubt that it would hold up in court if you got a ticket without breaking any other laws.. |
