Let me know guys, I'll drive it over, let you swap them on and pay. I need this done asap. Can't keep throwing $30-$50 in coolant every hot day.

P.S. Swapped a replacement trans in...finding out I had a trans from 84 and earlier and it wasn't the original transmission. Fun.
I would find out why your hoses are blowing off. There is no reason that should happen. I've used rubber hoses on my car since i've had it and never had a problem. Maybe it's the summit racing hoses you are using. Did you try and replace either one with a hose from a part store, or a GM factory hose?

They're blowing off because they have no lip to grab, just slipped into an adapter, and since they are ribbed aluminum the only way to clamp them is with a rubber adapter over the aluminum hose, which allows it to slip easily, or at least easier when the car is over 200*F. I can't use stock hoses as the stock hose is too short (hits my alternator pulley) and too small in diameter to work with my thermostat outlet, which is larger than stock. I'd rather not try another style hose, and just go with a hard pipe with curled ends so I can put a coupler on it and once tight, won't be able to back out due to the lip on the hard pipe. Plus. I like that style a lot, the hard pipe look.

I've marked the hose and outlet to see when it starts backing off, but it's only one section of the upper hose where the hot coolant flows into a 90* adapter and this is where it pushes the hose out of the adapter. Anyone want to make a few bucks? Shouldn't be too hard but I just finished moving and swapping in a trans, I'd like to get this done for ease of install this weekend, if possible. I just need something that can hold on stronger.

This is what I have.

Re: Ohio?

Can you post up a picture of the front of the motor? I'd like to see what you are dealing with. If you weren't so far away i'd be happy to help try and find a solution if you wanted to try some rubber hoses. I have both of my stock rubber hoses just sitting here.

Re: Ohio?

are use still using the lo3? if so I just cant see why stock hoses wouldn't fit
unless you have done something so custom then it might be an issue but even still
all the aftermarket radiators have the hose ends in the proper spots
and all sbc water necks are in basicly the same spot and the water pumps are in the same spot
I mean worst case get the ones for a truck as there bit longer and cut to size

Re: Ohio?

Sorry, became busy. The hose is as I repaired it last time it blew; new clamps (with an inner ring). It hasn't been as hot as the day it blew, so no overheating test yet.

Also sorry for forgetting the pictures. In the morning I'll snap some of the hose setup.

Hopefully trans mount and finally the new headlamp install after work. I just had to go with Wagner, NOBODY stocks Wagner. Next time, Sylvania.

Re: Ohio?

Alright guys, here we go. Picture 4 shows where the outlet of the hose goes into the inlet of the 90* adapter. This is where it blows off on those hots days. So far it hasn't backed off and I check the clamps every day. I make sure they're always snug. I had a few regular worm clamps strip on me, so that might have had something to do with it, just crappy clamps.

No, and that's where the problem arises. It just doesn't have a smooth end or lip to clamp on to and hold if it does come loose a little. They come ribbed end-to-end. This didn't come to mind when buying them as I figured a clamp could be tightened more than enough to keep it from allowing coolant or a hose to slip out.

So far it's still holding. I may just get 2 hard-pipes made for the upper and lower. Flare the ends a little for a lip. But the new clamps seem to be doing a good job. I don't know if I already said this but the old ones were stripped, so they were only able to go so tight before snapping down a thread or two. To which I tightened them to that point and checked on them daily. But a hot day or a cruise to another state I can't be checking this hose all the time, hoping these new clamps hold it forever more.

Re: Ohio?

could also be the engine flexing combined with heat and if you get full hard pipes you will end up with the same problem as the engine always flexes to the passenger side well or do you have solid motor mounts aswell to stop the flex as normaly when you want fancy custom lines like this you need the solid mounts aswell
my guess is you don't so when it flexes under load you yank the hose a little by little till it also gets hot and the rubber softens and the engine still flexing and wam coolent line yanked off
that's the reason for using rubber hoses coming off the radiator if all that's stopping that is the water neck put a stock neck back on get the braided radiator hoses and call it a day

Re: Ohio?

That sounds about right, but, it's not popping off at the water neck, it's coming off at the hose end going into the 90* adapter attached to the radiator inlet. Update again, the hose is still in it's place. Hasn't budged since I changed the clamps.

If the hard pipe had a lip (like my water neck) and the hose backed off, it would still have something extra to grip around. The couplers would also allow the pipe to flex/move around a bit during hard accel and decel.

I do plan on getting either poly mounts or go hard with the solid mounts, we'll see. Right now trans mount is in order.

Anything going on this weekend nearby? Azrael? I'll try and stop out, show the IROC.

Re: Ohio?

Going to wire up my fans the rest of the way tomorrow morning. Hit a snag when I read the fans and the relay need separate fused circuits, and that the controller needs to be on a separate circuit from the fans. I have separate ones for them, just unsure what size would be best etc etc. I have one 24a and one 30a max rating fuse links. I already wired them up per the diagram showing them all just needing 12v, so fix that, link them up, mock-up the wiring to the interior to the controller for test.

I'll keep you guys posted.

Re: Ohio?

I ran both of my fans off of 1 relay and 1 30 amp fuse. I had it set up so when the computer turned on the first fan, both of them would come on.

Re: Ohio?

Everything done and working. 5a fuse for the controller and 30a for the relay and fans. Everything works, turns on and off properly. Just need to route the wires to the interior and I'll have 2 working fans, set to whatever I want, with a temporary temp gauge. My stock unit had it's wire fried on the harness.

I'm happy.

Re: Ohio?

Looking like I may need more powerful fans. Idles at 205-206 (this night) with both fans on. I'd like to see around 195-200 with just a single fan. Imagine if I were racing or high revving like I have plans to do. Sitting on a cold night at 205 can't be good with a 95* day at the track.

Quick question. Fans, push or pull? They're set to push now. I wired them up opposite of before and still, they run as push. So I'm wondering if a pull setup may be the better route, pulling air from the front, working with the wind as well, over the motor and out the back of the cowl.

Re: Ohio?

What fans are you using? I remember a few years back that tons of people were using fans from a ford taurus. They fit like the tpi dual fan setup and flowed even more air. You might want to look into that. I have the factory dual fan setup on my car and I believe they are pull.

Re: Ohio?

Edit: I know about the taurus fans, but being me, I'll just buy some new aftermarket fans. Might try and find something pushing around 2,000cfm per fan. The ones I have now flow 1300CFM at max speed. So 2600 all together, and I hear this is less than stock electrical fans and/or mechanical fan. As we all know mechanical fans kick CFM butt.

Another day out and it was hotter than last night. But the car never made it to 200? Idles around 195 on this hotter day. Anyway, for now the cooling is fine. Until I see above 210* idle, I don't think I need better fans.

Also, I was cruising the freeway and the temp got down to about 177*, in the heat, at about 60mph. What is the closed operation temperature of the O2 Sensor? I don't want the computer going in and out of loop because of the temp dropping below that point. I'd like to stay around 185-200* (or at least 5-10 above the O2 operation), for ease of tuning later on. But if it's dropping to 177 on a hot day with the fans off, I may need to change something to keep it up higher, while cruising the freeway. If it starts getting colder, my car may never get up to operating temp. Maybe a closed 180* stat would benefit?

If the fans cool better as pullers, I may keep mine pushers, since the car seems to stay below that 220* mark I don't want to creep around. I know it's what they run at factory, but not what's best for performance.

I also noticed that when I come down to idle RPM, what seems to be no matter what, the temp usually goes down 1-2*. I can come right off the freeway to a light and once I stop, the temp goes down another quick 1-2*. I would think as I come closer to idle from off the freeway, the temp would increase quicker, not decrease. Am I backwards here? So many new things I'm learning about the way these cars run.

So nice not having to slam my hood closed at 1am next to someones bedroom window because I have to turn off the hotwired fan. Less stress. More for you guys later.

P.S. Did I ever mention it was another bad headlamp? So far the 4th one is fine. Could something be shorting these, or did I just get a bad batch? I need to get some di-electric too.

Well as of tonight, my car is sorta alive. We got most of the wiring hooked up (some of it temporary) and sorted out some little bugs. Hopefully thursday will be another productive day and we can actually keep the car running and put a tune on it.

No. But I did tighten my column, swap polarity of my fans, replaced the 2 courtesy light bulbs for the kick panels and hit 235* this morning driving around Downtown.

Hey guys. How accurate for a point to have the fans turn on and off with, is the passenger side head for reading temperature? I hit 235* today and am wondering if this is reading 240* at the CTS or 230*, or very close to what my sender is picking up. Let me know. I may be looking at a temp that is cooler/hotter than what I should be using to adjust fan on/off operation. Then again, this is where the Aux fan switch was too, so it can't be too bad of a place to read from.

My fans are set to come on @ 200 and 205. I don't want to run it too much "hotter" due to the hose situation that I haven't officially fixed. Hopefully next paycheck I can pick up another hose for fitment. Also to get my exhaust fitted better and get rid of this exhaust leak. Definitely coming from the header area. Maybe the collector. As more gets done, my smile grows larger. I may need to buy another face.

Did you end up going? Myself and 86base went this morning for a couple of hours. He picked up a brand new tpi distributor and a set of aluminum heads for good deals.

Re: Ohio?

Finished more of the wiring tonight. Hooked up the torque converter control, park/neutral, oil pressure gauge, and the tach. The gauge shows 46 psi oil pressure at idle, so I guess that's not too bad for a 75k mile motor. The tach is hooked up and works, but doesn't read properly. I guess it's just a simple adjustment in the tune. Tomorrow i'm going to pull the car out and let it idle until it gets up to temp. I still need to make sure the fans are going to work, and the thermostat opens. If all goes well i'm going to take it around the block once or twice. Later this week i'm taking it to big dog fabrication in stow to get the y pipe reworked.

Re: Ohio?

As of yesterday, my car is back on the road. Finished some wiring, checked the fans, and pulled it out of the garage finally. Took a quick trip around my neighborhood then put it away for the night. I'd post a video but it's on facebook and I doubt a link would work.

Re: Ohio?

I wasn't really looking for anything in particular. Just really wanted to go because I haven't been to one in a few years.

Good to hear your car is back on the road. The link didn't work on my phone.
