first time at the track.. have some ?'s

first of all, let me appologize if i make this to long and rattle on to much.

well a few weeks ago i took my car to the track for the first time with members of the car club im in. mind u this is my first time at a strip, with the 406, 150 shot nitrous, and MT E/T streets, 26x11.5x15 on my 15x10 rims. On motor my best was 12.916 @ 106 mph w/ a 1.8 60". On spray my best was 12.3@117 w/ a 1.76 60" and the car bogged in 2nd gear. the run before this i ran by myself and go a 12.4@126 w/ a 1.7x 60". and a major bog.

I had my tire pressure set at 18 psi *for the 1st run*. but forgot that that warm air will raise my psi... and didnt check my tires till the 2nd to last run, my 12.4@126 run. So now i know to check the tires constantly.

On both of the last 2 runs the engine bogged in 2nd when it hit the window switch. My window switch is set at 3000 and 5600 btw. i felt the nitrous kick in when i got on it at 3000 in 1st, and when it went into 2nd, the car/engine bogged, ie fell on its face and felt like i was going nowhere, untill 4500 rpms and then shot off like a rocket. and did fine through out 3rd. on my 126 mph run im sure i just nailed it off the line and spun my tires like crazy and after 2nd, when the car took off again i had some wheel spin again. in my 117mph run i launched off the line easier, but it bogged again once i hit 2nd, and rocketed/turned on again around 4500 again and i shot off with traction/wheel spin problems.

besides me having to practice my launches any helpfull hints? And any ideas what caused the bogging(is that even a word)?

i know to wait for the 3rd yellow, then nail it, but for some reason id just go brain dead and by the time i hit the gas the green light was on, and i would just nail it off the line vs getting a feel for whats best for the car, which i found out is around 1500-1700 rpms, so far.

the fuel pump is a 245 gph, and i thought it was good enough, but now im thinking a 255 and a booster pump. the car also needs some more tuning done to it cause i know i was spraying alot of fuel into it, which i think may have saved my engine when the fuel pump took a break/when it bogged.

and what sucks is i was going to scan my best slips, but found out XP pro dpesnt liek my scanner, and the sdcanner company doesnt have any plans on updating their program to also for XP pro. that and since christmas is near, my mom got all the decorations out of the attic and went to town on the house.. and in doing so i think she threw away my slips that were on the counter near my room cuase i havent found them yet and i know my dad wouldnt have tossed them.

What tranny are you using? Sounds like the deep gear spread is pulling the motor down on the shifts. Do you have a convertor? That will help with the bog. You will have to play with the shift points. Did you scan and record the O2's on the runs?

Try raising your shift points a couple hundred rpm.

i have a 700r4 *not stock* and a 2200 stall. i had 26LB injectors in, but since i got the NX in i put some SVO 30's and did a quick tune, but far from great.

yes it did.. big time. as stated above i thing i got lucky with the bogging cause i think the fuel pump went out for a sec and i think that extra fuel i had making the car rich might have saved the engine.

The 2200 stall is hurting you on the shift recovery point. Go out and find out what rpm you car drops to on the 1-2 shift when shifting manually at 6500 rpm. I have a 3500 yank and mine drops back down to 5000-5200.

Like was said before, you could raise your shift points as a solution.

Why are you shifting at 5600? Why a 2200 stall? Just wondering?

y at 5600.. cause i have a 406 and the power band stops at 55xx, so y push it past the point where its not making any more and actualy loosing power. I got a 2200 cause that was the best 1 i thought i could use seeing how my powerband starts around 2500.

You say your power band stops at 5500? Is that from a dyno sheet or what cam card claims?
My 400's cam card claims 6500 as max but chassis dyno and track tests both show it pulls to 7000. Also I'd go to a 3500 stall conv.

If you dynoed 399 rear wheel horses under 5600 rpm,,, you have seriously messed something up since that dyno session to only knock down a 12.9 on the motor. You should be WAY low in the 12's even with a 2200 stall,,, and shouldn't be bogging solely regarding shift point. The bogging and taking off could be lean or rich,, or could be your timing. Or a combination of "fueling" and timing. Hard to say over the internet. I'd go back to the track with the same injectors and tune you had when it pulled 399 horses and go from there.

I'd definitely lay off the nitrous until you got the motor running where it should be.

sorry for the delay in replying. i think the main problem is TO MUCH fuel. when i went out today to mess around with the car, it wants to bog in 1st and 2nd alot and i think its cuase it has to much fuel going into it. so im taking it back to the shop in a few days and have him mess with it and get everything correct and then take it back to the strip and get some much better times. im hoping for atleast 11.9's on engine alone if not 11.6-11.7's.

jwfirebird- the intake/plemun, T.b. runners have all been modified. actually the 406 has a TPIS big mouth intake, a BBK 58mm t.b.,plenum and TPIS large tubes.. all have been extremely ported and matched.
