Finally got some more finishing touches done... R!cer mods as some would call it Side exhaust (muffler removed), hood/hatch pins, removable steering wheel, whiteface gauges, push button start, sequential shift light, fire extinguisher and tow strap.
Nice ride! I like the back part of the cage. The front part I have a caveat - front side bars sloping to front look like a nice street set-up for easy entry, I would not want this for road racing though. There is a vulnerable area there and I would check the rules to make sure this is legal, we had something written in the rules (another bar most folks do not have) to make that area stronger. The protection should be so a car nose cannot get in to compromise the driver. I'll e-mail this thread to my cage builder (Alan Blaine) to see what he thinks for ya.

Reason: wrong word!
The exhaust 'tip' is just a Dr Gas round to oval transition bend cut to match the car.
I'ld love to know what AB thinks! I know I should complete the 'X' for the door bars, but then getting the dash in/out will be fun along with emergancy egress time (not to mention regular egress ease). I've got short legs and the seat is pretty far forward. Just getting around the shoulder bolsters with a helmet on is fun, and I don't even have the HANS yet.
I remember reading somewhere (I think Chassis Engineering by Adams) that it was preferred to tie bars to the plates rather than each other if possible. I don't know if he meant to do it or not for a bar such as the door bar. I also did that for the rear diagonal, tied to the plate rather than the other bar.
The only thing I saw in the rules was that you now need two door safety bars. I don't see why this won't meet that requirement. I'm still keeping the door intrusion beam. The hope is that should I have a small side impact, I may get away with just replacing the door and not be cutting and redoing bars. In a big side impact, that's three and a half bars/beams between me and the car/object. I do realize I'm giving up space between me and the bars. Guess I'll admit part of the reason I chose to go with an X over Nascar bars is I'm a WRC fan.
Always great to see folks joining up. I have had a lot of great times since 2000 when I joined the series with my '84 TA, which, I am glad to report, has moved on to a new California home and will be active in CMC West this year!
Here's what AB had to say:
Quote:
The lower door bar needs to be touching the Apillar and sharing a common footwell pad - I can't tell if it does from the pics. If not it could be
gusseted. Probably would be accepted by CMC if it was close. Safety and structure wise, it needs to have the diagonals completed from the
middle of the door bars up to the Apillar at the dash bar. Simple addition, and would be a nice cage then.
Regards,
Alan
Good news!!! Rock on third gen brother!

I just enlarged an existing hole in the horizontal part of the bumper and bolted it up there. Ideally, you'ld want something attached to the frame, but that's too much a PITA.
A few tips on the stickerage, since that can be done wrong! Make sure you read the rules on where and what size everything should be. Bigger numbers on the doors are better.
Julie, what are the yellow loops stickign out of the hood of that formula?
----------
Wait a minute, it looks like it has a TA back bumper, do you have any more pics of that car?

That is a TA- I got in a crash and my spare front was from a Formula. It was nicer with the brake ducting! I got tons of pix of this car. The loops are new for this year, those are tow hooks - rated for 3 tons each!
if the car has not has an annual tech and will be getting one after 1/08 the door bars will not pass the scca tech. which is pretty close to nasa rules. door bars must be nascar style bars horixzontal to the frame of the car.

I did not know that. Is that a change in the GCR or the ASedan rules? I was dissappointed when they changed ITE to not allowing big cube cars. I wouldn't be able to run in AS anyways (no fuel cell) but would have liked to run in ITE every so often. I heard that a few people would run ITE as they were in the process of building up their AS cars.
Even already got my first rookie ding in my second event (TWS) courtesy of oil on track + tire wall. Thankfully, the racing gods are breaking me in gently and it was only a very minor dent in the font fender.
That's great Gary! What a nice lookin' ride too. My first intended race car was an '84 Z28, brings back some good memories for me. Your car reminds me of Nick Steel's 3rd gen Camaro that he won the championship in a few years back.

GMan, great job! Don't worry, you'll get faster as you get more experience. You're giving up many feet of track on turn in (called pinching the turn)...work on getting as close to the edge of the track as you can and definitely use those berms, that will get you a ton of more speed.
Good job avoiding the car spun out in the middle of the track!
