If you know how to weld and have a MIG or TIG welder with sheilding gas you can do it yourself. NHRA says NO stick welds, or gasless flux core welding. Only Mig or Tig
I installed a 10 point cage, with swing out sidebars in mine.
I had a cheap flux core gassless welder. My idea was to cut/fit all the bars in and tack them into place with my welder then call a pro out to mig weld all the joints.
Ended up the pro welders wanted too damn much to do it. $50 less than I could buy a new hobart mig and rent a argon/c02 bottle for.. So I bought a 140 amp hobart welder and rented a tank.
Ground all the flux core welds off and weldedit all my self with the mig.
thank you i just bought a cage and i wondered about that, my cousin i guess will help me hes certified to weld...underwater..but ive been welding for a wile...but yeah thanks for the pictures there a big help to
A 5 point roll bar is legal to 10.0 as long as your firewall and floor are unmodified. Putting in wheel tubs at the rear is not considered a floor modification. Just don't relocate the firewall or cut out the floor to make an access area to remove the tranny.
Most people put in the passenger door bar to make it a 6 point roll bar. Adding the tubes under the rear crossbar and running them down to the driveshaft tunnel area makes it an 8 point roll bar. After that, you get into a full cage classification.

The only time the tubes can be welded straight to the car is if they're welded directly to the frame. Third gens do not have a frame so you must weld the plates to the floor then weld the tubes to the plates. Depending where you position the plates, they can also be bolted to the floor with a 6 x 6 x 1/8" plate on the top and bottom of the floor and a minimum of four 3/8" bolts through each plate. Because of the floor contours, it's hard to bolt the plates into a third gen to position the tubes in a functional position.
You can not weld the tubes directly to the sheet metal. Well, you can but only if you plan on driving only on the street since it will offer no rollover protection and won't pass a tech inspection.
ok another question i have the 8 pt set up....can i use the bars the cnnect to the drive tunnle that would normally make it 8 when used with the door bars instead of the door bars? i guess im saying could i have a 6pt without using the bars that run by the doors
No you can not get by with out at least the drvers side bar or a five point. I have both side bars swing out and when im not at the track I take them out.
