I think some tracks also require you have an air cleaner as well if you don't have a hood?

It may be a track discretion. Typically there's no problems running without a hood but some tracks may say 11.50 and slower cars must have a hood. I don't have a current NHRA rulebook handy.

I'm almost tempted to ditch the hood just to save some weight. Third gen hoods are heavy even the fiberglass ones and I have a cowl and aeroscoop mounted on it.

Lift off should be the lightest since bolt on ones go on like a stock hood.

less weight, more air getting to the filter, cooler engine temps..

Because my fuel cell is at the front, I have to open my hood after every run just to fuel up. A lift off hood without a helper could be a pain. If I had a pit crew, having a very lightweight lift off hood would be the way to go.

I was considering fabricating a lift off hood from some sheet aluminum I had access to years ago. I couldn't get a sheet big enough to do it as one piece. I figured just weld 2 pieces together down the center. Now with the cowl on my hood, it would have easily covered up the welds.

yup, thats the problem. the car needs a 2 man crew to operate with the lift off hood. im trying to come up with an aluminum hinge for mine. its just not fun having to get somebody to help with the friggin hood after each pass.

i'm always at the track with at least one other buddy who either rode with me or has his car parked next to mine, it's never an issue, even for a stranger just walking by to just ask them to help me grab the hood real quick.

could always cut some kind of hatch/cover to fill the cell through without lifting the hood...

That would look horible. I have a lift off hood. It can be alittle more of a pain sometimes but it makes working on the motor so much easier when you dont have to wory about ducking around a hood.
