went out to the musclecar-evolution.com track day today. hopefully car_fixer will chime in with some footage and times for his own car. but i just wanted to let you guys know how the little 305 did:
i think the 4.56's in the newly installed 9" are too much. i was going through the traps at ~6300rpms and i shift it at 6000. i could feel the car start to nose over right at the mph markers. for this combo, a 4.33 gear would be perfect, but i'm not gonna mess with gears for this combo anymore. i'll be putting a 4.11 gear in it soon to get ready for the 350. overall i'm pleased. i made two launches off the transbrake. it felt strong both times, but i was actually slower to the 60', and about a tenth slower to the 1/4 traps. it seemed like it wanted to snatch the wheels off the ground though! i want to pull the tires with this 305 so bad i can taste it, lol!

A 150 shot will have those wheels up in the air, that's what my old 305 took to go wheels up.

Don't need to change the gear. Ya need to change the camshaft. The lil 305 wants to rev and needs a solid lifter cam. Try adjusting the valve lash preload right at the top, even with a slight ticky of the lifters (.001" lash). Will make the hyd cam act like a solid and rev a little higher. Retarding the cam a little bit (4-5deg) will shift the power band up if you think more top end will help.
The ignition timing may be just slightly too high. Try locking out the distributor advance and take a degree or two out of er.
for a 305 it hauls, it is running out of steam on top, might not be cam though, I say spray it, nice little 150 shot, it will pull the fronts just fine, then the driver will freak, but that only lasts a pass or two with the wheels up, and i dont know if doug was shootin your car or not...ill have to check on that, my times sucked.......9.36 or something, i was lookin for 8's damnit
i got to talking with my machinist a little last night when i dropped his trailer off...i'm wondering if i'm running out of fuel volume due to lack of fuel pump. i'm still running a stock return style mechanical pump. an aeromotive street/strip pump would be really nice about now. it never nosed over at any of my 6100rpm shift points, just at the very top of the track, right at the mph markers...if this is the case, the 4.56's will match my little 305 just fine then.
i need a linelock bad now though. the aerospace component disc brakes that came with the 9" do their job very well...a little too well actually, doing a burnout is a chore now.
things i'd like to buy to try on the 305 before going to the 350 that will transfer over to the new motor:
-Aeromotive Street/Strip fuel pump
-Electric waterpump
-all new ignition system. distributor, coil, wires, plugs, and put in a box that has a few revlimiters. i'd like a high side, 2 step for the launch and a 3 step for the burnout.

don't run a fuel pressure guage up on the windshield wiper area to see if it truly is nose-diving due to lack of fuel pressure? That would be a quick check before spending money you don't need to spend. Seen mechanical pumps on vehicles in the 10s, possibly use a higher volume mech. pump if needed as that'll be the cheapest and quietest option.
Nice times!! I ran a carter strip pump yrs ago and sprayed a 150 shot and went high 10's w/o any probs what so ever.....So, you could still stick with a mechanical imo...

Right on Matt! You made it to 12.31 with the old solid cam and the AL heads right? And 12.16 with the 350? I'd say you're doing damn good for that combo, especially the 1.66 60'.
Instead of removing gear, what about taller tires? Just curious if you're considering that route at all?
the 12.31 was with this same camshaft, the comp magnum 280H, but yes, it had the aluminum l98 heads on it then.
i'm a little weary about going to a taller tire cause the next size up drag radial is a 295/65/15, which is 30" in diameter, and i think it might look a little goofy. the 28's just look so damn good right now.
i think there is a little left in her. i'm wanting to get all the supporting mods together before the 350 is put together, so that means even longer before the 350 is in, so i'm thinking that the extra time i'm giving myself and the new supporting mods, i might be able to squeeze another tenth or two out of her.
rich, let me know when you get those up! my vids don't show CRAP....

one of the vids on mce have you in it, its just i ah...dont remember which one......most of them seem to be their buds cars, us nobody's are not worth of airtime.
you are on the looooong video at about 34 minutes, it just might take 3 hours to download, i think his site is kind of busy, and that sanchez guy.....i dont know about him......i dont like one of his comments

what kinda percent slippage does a "good" converter have? mine is like 8% based on what i calculated it at. goes 104 at 6200rpms, mph calculaters say that with a 4.56, 28" tall tires and third gear should be 113mph @ 6200rpms...is this ok?

You're right where you want to be. The engine torque curve, converter and rear gear all have to work together over the quarter mile. Your combination is working well now. 8% slippage is well within the expected working range.
So the car does not like the transbrake? Are the tires loosing traction? or???
is the suspension overreacting?
i think it just wants to go up instead of out. best 60' on transbrake was a 1.70, best on foot brake was a 1.66, and stayed in the 1.6's all day. i want to put a two step on the car to keep the launch rpms consistant, than i'll probably run the transbrake all day long. and i'll set it low (like 2800-3000) so i can still flash the converter when i'm on the brake.
Nice times for the combo!! That`s strange about the 60`s and the brake, my car would not even go 1.5 without the brake 1.7`s on a good day and after the 2 step and finding the sweet spot low 1.4`s on a 3500 9.5 verter..4.30 /29`s
To gain consistancy i would try locking out the distributor. Then using the trans brake for a quick stall test determine what the motor likes for spark timing.
The best timing will give the highest stall on the brake. (Quick stationary test)
Just watch the trans temp when doing stall tests on the brake. Let it cool off.
Even 1/2 a degree makes a difference.
A Big trans cooler and a big fan in front of the car helps to cool of the trans between stall tests. A great way to set up the carb accelerator pumps too.
Keep in mind that the trans temp can/will affect the stall. Don't overheat the trans. Do say 1 or 2 quick stall tests on the brake then go for a cruise to cool off the trans.
Once you find what timeing makes the highest stall (most engine torque) , the best mph in the traps very well could/will be a little less than this. Thats where a ignition retard box comes in in third gear. Can also be used to adjust the power on launch.
I would switch to a colder non projected tip spark plug to run this aggressive timing.
AC R42T or Champion RV8c works well for me.
If the motor is hard to start with the timing locked out, just install a simple ignition power switch to cut the spark during hot cranking.
Might help to get some one to video the car and rear tires during launch to see what is going on. I found that adding a air bag in the right rear spring really helps these cars.
like i said, i think i'm just hitting it too hard and i'm wanting to put the two step on it to limit the launch rpms...who knows, maybe a 1.5x out of the 305? i'm actually going with a 3 step for a burnout box limiter too...
edit: f-bird, i just saw your post and i'll be taking everything you said in consideration and will be playing alot with it early next february. i think i'm gonna start a computerized checklist, one for all the things f-bird 88 says, and then one for everyone else, lol! i can't remember all the tricks to try by myself, hahaha!

LOL and another column for all the stuff F-BIRD suggests that don;t work....LOL thats drag racing........
oh, i'm sure i'll have SEVERAL columns just like that, lol! the one thing i've learned so far about drag racing is that every single individual car like things just a little different...
They all seem to like money thrown at them thou....
truer words were never spoken

Ian was watching your car from the water box, said it extended the front all the way but didnt lift the fronts. I definitly agree that the accelerator pump could use some tuning, was the back fire in the water box before or after changeing the squirter, 8% slip isnt bad for that combo (i get less then 5 lol)
and whats with all the long island street racing stuff?
and i can cut you out of the looooooong vid if you want
update i did trim one of your passes out, letme know if u want it maybe they wont know lol
the backfire in the waterbox was after i put the size 37 squirter on it. i'm gonna play with that some this weekend since i have thursday through sunday off.
the long island stuff....hehe, i have a TON of friends from new york, jersey, pa, and pretty much the rest of new england...all of which i have met at numerous NSCA, NMCA, Ontario Street Car Association, and many other street legal drag racing orgs. that originated in new england, and i kinda relate racing to the guys that i hang with from jersey and "the island"...i know, it's wierd...oh well...
...so by rights, xpndble and i should be like mortal enemies or something, him being from the midwest and me hanging with the east coast guys...but i'd actually like to end up in detroit, so i'm an oxymoron from the get-go!
i forgot to mention, my car tipped the scales with out me in it at 2975lbs with a full tank of fuel. weighed in at 3230 w/ me...i'm pretty stoaked about that, cause until i put a cage in the car, this is about as heavy as it'll ever be since i have the 9" in it now and it has iron cylinder heads. i'm hoping to shave off another 40-50lbs. from it when i put the aluminum headed 350 in it with an electric water pump...and then hell, maybe i'll pull the backseats for shits and grins...
psssh matt, chitown rules all. Let me know when you want to run down this way for our grunge match, of course my old 305 was doing 11.60s, so you'll have to strap on a cannon to match what I was doing 4 years ago. 150 shots are fun. Look for a pair of twins on my ride this spring

that'll be badass. i've got respect for all street style racers for sure! i think i'll be putting the squeeze on it soon, already got most of a kit lined up, just gotta get a plate...and wait for the guy to come off of it...i think i'll be able to do better than 11.6 on a 150shot, since i'm 4tenths quicker than you were already on motor.
Nice times out of a 305. My best motor pass was a 12.5023 @ 108.70 With a powershot 125 ran a 11.1263 @ 120.97. Foor brake launch 1.59 60ft

Reason: Automerged Doublepost
You can easily twist the 305 well past your trap rpm's. Recam it up and loosen up the converter a bit. The front raises fine, it just needs a little more snap off the line. You may also find after swapping cams it may want more gear as well. I can't tell you how hard I twist mine but suffice it to say it's way past 6300. My best run to date as a J/SA combo is 11.355 @ 115.31 with a 1.49 60'. My min wt is 3345 and it was way heavy on that run. Now I grant you your 305 isn't as maxed out as one of our class motors, but the same principles still apply. Which cam are you running in yours? I wish we could run more lift but due to rule restrictions my combo is limited to a .357 int/.390 exh though we can run any duration.
I think he has a comp xr280, atleast thats what i think he said at the track, it does seem to run out of steam , like matt said it may be running out of fuel at that point, the cam range is 6500, i didnt look where float is, but it seems a little small, i asked if he would consider going to 1.6 rockers for now untill he builds his new engine, he has alot invested in good 1.5's so i cant blame him for not wanting to do that, i say just spray it see what happens.
it's the old 280h magnum cam. 230*/230* .480"/.480" 110lsa. rpm range is 2000-6000. i'm not gonna recam it. i'm thinking of adding about .003" of lash to the rockers to allow it to spin up a little more. i was gonna put an isky solid cam in it, but i'm going hydrualic roller with the 350 and don't want to spend any more money going in the wrong direction. i don't want to build the car around a motor that spins to 7500rpms and then build a 350 that only wants 6600.
Mod313: I know alot of what goes into the stock eliminator motors...and i know that Rich Aman was spinning his H/Stock 86 305 car to 8200rpms, so i'd imagine yours is up about 7500...but he's running a jericho 5spd...
rich, thanks for the vids man, that is fine just like it is!
did you get the other one i e mailed?
and i agree if you are going to use a hyd. roller dont build the car to rpm to the moon and then just have to change it back. gather up a plate for that nitrous kit...i will take another look at the old plate i am not shure which fitting it is thats stripped, if it is replaceable, i will let you know
cool deal bro, just let me know, cause then i could by the kit off of greg to go along with it! yes, i got that vid as well. tell ian and the guys thanks for the vids, and thank you for sending them!
no problem, sides it was cool being neighbors lol, next summer we might borrow the neighbors air conditioned enclosed (duh) trailer, if you wanna hang its cool with me lol, and when you get the kit from him, check the date on the bottle, they are good for 5 years then need to be recertified, both are bottles just turned 5 lol. the guy down at summit said depending on the brand, most of the bottles on the shelf are atleast 2 yrs. old...just giving you a heads up, i dont think the track studys them , but some places will not fill out of date bottles
i hear some fire departments, and supply places, also maybe scuba shops, but i am going to give nos a ring and see what they recommend, also possibly a welding supply place might do them, i really want to check with nos first, Ian is going to PRI show and said they had painted bottles cheap last year so he might pick up 2 new 15 lb bottles (have 10's now) have to wait and see on that though. put the new t-brake solenoid in today now i need to put those old sportsman tires on it and play around in the parking lot (and maybe do a big smokey burnout for fun)
yeah, my dad showed me my credentials. it's like the weekend before my finals, so i'm a little hestitant to go. if i have to drive, then i don't think i'm gonna make it, but if i can ride with him, then i'm gonna go.
wow that sure is moving out for a 305 with that combo! makes me wonder how quick i could go with better tune, longtubes, more gear/converter and proper drag suspension/some weight reduction! awesome ride man
awesome times, and awesome video! lol that black car seemed to want to give ya the head start at the line huh? about as bad as me! haha. sweet.
