My 383 HSR first shakedown passes--VID INSIDE

First passes tonight on my rough street tune and the results are pretty good so far.

I really honestly was expecting mid 12's tonight cuz the car doesnt feel that fast. It really doesnt haha. IT was mid 80's degrees tonight with a DA of 3000 ft so i didnt expect much being that hot.

BUT results speak for themselves. I was running a high 38-39 degrees timing and roughly 12.5 to 1 air fuel. had alittle miss or something on my last run but the first and best run was no problems

My build is listed in my vbgarage linked in sig below. Basically a 383 11:1 decent sized hyd roller and ported HSR with AFR 195 eliminators

No subframe connectors and stock 10 bolt made me want to go easy on launch but i got alittle on it, abit harder than i originally wanted but the car handled it ok

HERE WE GO

http://media.putfile.com/383-HSR-first-14-mile-passes

YES thats my hood louver peeling off haha

1.59 60 foot
4.767 330'
7.429 at 92 mph 1/8
9.728 1000'
11.67 at 116.3 mph 1/4 mile

Shifted at 6000 first gear, 6500 or so second.

next passes i tried 2 degrees less timing and shifting later. hit rev limiter in second, trans wouldnt shift right at 6500. limiter at 6800 and i was on it for alittle while, you can hear it in the second run in the vid if you listen
probly would have been a good pass but i spun bad, 1.66 60 foot.

So thats where i leave it..... stock TPI air intake with gutted bottoms and screenless MAF. I cant imagine how much more is in it with perfect ignition, perfect air fuel, perfect timing and more air flow thru the intake, oh and cooooold weather.

pretty much met my goal with this build but when i think about it, i think it should be a good bit faster considering the car weight and motor specs i guess i'm getting greedy

^ Your running a rough street tune to boot, wait until she's dialed in. Heh, reminds me a lot of Tim's run when he installed the Lethal cam from Joe Overton, he too was surprised the first time out running 11.66....

Man that car is running good. You will be able to knock a few tenths off. Hell my new combo has gone .6 tenths faster since it first pass and when the cold weather comes I am sure to pick up a lil more. 10.60s to a 10.05.

Outstanding. I agree with the above posts. You are going to inch closer to the 11:00 second mark and maybe even a high 10 in your future. That is a job well done. Excellent pick of parts for your motor combination. I bet my prediction of 400rwhp is not far off.

You absolutely killed the other cars you were up against.

Definately....and I think he said he was going to run nitrous as well. But I defiantely see low 11's in your future.

Hmmm....makes me want a BRE cam now considering we are running the same engines except for the cams.

Congrats! As I said on pittspeed, good to meet you last night.

I got to see the first two passes, how many more did you end up getting? Between lots of breakdown (same diesel truck 2X) and late start, if you got more than one more pass, i'm surprised.

What rear tires were you running?

11.67 / 116...and somebody said, "The car doesn't feel that fast...."

Good job, Orr89RocZ!

haha IT DOESNT!! thats the funny thing. on the street it feels slow to me. go figure i'll never be satisified now

Rear tires are 26x10.50x15 mickey thompson ET streets. I may go to a 11.50" tire because it looks better behind the car

One more that was it. I launched good, again not 100% but strong enough i thought, but only did a 1.62 60 foot. Ran same 11.67 but at 115.44. 1/8 mile was quicker at 7.427 instead of 7.429 haha but my trap was 92.4 instead of 92.0.

i think it would have done better on that run but in third at 5800 rpms or so the rpms dropped alittle like i hit a limiter but then started pulling again. I think it was an ignition problem or something

Quote:

haha i didnt line up against anything worthy til last round, a new mustang on drag radials with bolt ons. he did 12.96 at 107 but i still got him good. civic ran 14.4 at 104 and neon ran like 15.7's.
Kinda sucked i was hoping to get an ls1 car or one of the sprayed fox bodys.

Congrats! Those are some very impressive times. It pays off when you do you research and match parts up well together which it appears your combo works very well.

I just loaded my car up on the trailer im headin out tomorrow night for some midnight madness. Well see how it does if it does mid 12s ill be happy! Street tires+5 speed arent really made for the drag strip.

Re: My 383 HSR first shakedown passes--VID INSIDE

Well thats the thing, the car has loads more in it. I did only 75% on those launches if that, the two runs felt like it slipped a bit. even that first one could have slipped a bit or so it felt. Wasnt 100% smooth

I will wait til i get the rest of the car done before i switch tires out but i think it could help me, especially if the nitrous comes this year

Madmax whats your opinion on stock sized maf sensor and TPI style air intake? I'm seriously considering making a new air intake system. I wanted to make a new bigger MAF but right now i may hold off and try to make a CAI to see if the TPI lid is hurting me. I was thinking of buying a highflow lid that 1bad91z makes but i figured a true 3.5" to stock 3" MAF sensor would work even better for similar price investment

I would think these airboxes are hurting alittle bit even tho i have a homeade ram air system so it helps at speed

Orr!...that is great to finally see your car at the track..very nice times. I just havent had time to get out there plus I wrecked mine and its been in the body.

I can only hope to touch what speed you grabbed. With my cam I should be close. Not as big as yours but its not always the cam that gets you down the track. Ive seen smaller cams go in the 11's so I guess one day we'll see. I need tires first so I can cut a sub 1.8 60' ...I did it with 1.7 with my 305 so I know my rear can hold it.

back to watching "pinks" they finally picked a 12.5 class which is more realistic to the normal street racing.

Thanks man! it feels good to drive the car again and especially race again. I'm impressed with what it did so far, i really wasnt expecting that. From your setup i'd think your in the high 11's easily. Cam aint as big but doesnt matter, its big enough to power that car to 11's i'd say. Fully tuned in good conditions for sure, you definately need converter and slicks to get it off the line

not wanting to put the pedal thru the floor...LOL

10 bolt and no subframes will do that to you lol

I stalled it to 2400-2500 but it would go alot higher. I then went roughly 3/4 throttle then mashed it once it hooked and left. second run i did same thing but went 100% and spun a good bit since i didnt burn out long enough and track prep was abit lacking. Went 1.66 so it wasnt a bad 60 so you can see there is some power to be had.
Last run i did same stall with good burnout and same 75% throttle. It felt better than first run, but it only went 1.62 that time. I short shifted alittle to see if the motor liked it. matched the 11.67 but at 115 mph. motor hit a wall for a split second at 6000 rpm, i'm not sure why. May have been ignition related. 1/8 mile was same but .40 mph faster

So i didnt quite stall it up as high as it could go and mash it off the line like i normally would. I rolled into it basically and only 75% throttle so i would say with full launch, on a day like that, i'd see lower 1.50's to MAYBE a 1.49. In cold weather with gears, i'd hope to see mid 1.4's but that may be optimistic

If i dont dyno soon, i'll head out again maybe next week and try 1500-2000 stall and let if flash 100% instead of full line brake stall and mashing. Its just a tad softer on the rear i think that way as it leaves a tad softer/slower

Thats not really a TPI intake, unless you're referring to the part between the filters and throttle body. I think you're nearing the point where the <3" ID is coming into play though, if you're looking for that last bit of power. I'd imagine you can break into the 10's with it though, quite a few have. Your engine may not be able to, and that might help at that point but I'd look at that plastic Y box first and go from there.

Good runs Justin!
Car is running great man! Does look really strong out of the hole, may want to stiffen rear just a little - might be bottoming out, then unloading tires. Not sure, seemed to squat pretty hard. Looked really strong though, keep playing and it will go much faster.. You deffinetly have deeep 11's and high 10s not out of reach either.
Took 5 out of jets last night on mine, got it down to an .87, but 60ft is still a 10th off.. Seems I might be extending rear on mine after watching vid, still running stock shocks in back, probably no rebound left in them to keep rear from extending to quickly.

Re: My 383 HSR first shakedown passes--VID INSIDE

yeah i ment the TB to the filters section. I want to try to make a CAI using a LT1 aluminum intake elbow and connecting that to the MAF and having a 3.5 or 4" section to the fender well with filter

That way i shorten the overall length of the air intake passage and force the MAF to be the restriction. I hear the longer the intake tract the more restrictive it is,to a degree. Diameter also plays a role there but a long 4inch section may be restrictive too compared to a short 3inch diameter pipe.
So 3 inch diameter to the MAF then opening up to a large 3.5" or 4" will reduce the length restriction effect due to the larger piping diameter at the end. I think it will help me. I just need to figure out how to properly relocate the battery to the trunk

Hahaha. Looks like the power and speed was to much for the louver.

By the way our local cars always pick up power with a bigger intake on the dyno. They make less power than your car so I'm sure that is holding you back quite abit.

Congrats, that's definately moving. You definately made a nice clean pass all the way down. Traction doesn't appear to be an issue for you yet.

See my sig... about .2 faster, but I make 5 more MPH. I definately need more tire to see what the car really has. You're getting most of the power to the ground for sure.

I know it felt good to be racing again.

Re: My 383 HSR first shakedown passes--VID INSIDE

yep it sure does feel good to race. i had a slight traction issue on the 1 run since i didnt burnout good but so far those little 10.50 ET streets are hookin good enough. I made a new tune thats a touch leaner and less timing so i want to go back out and try it wednesday but we'll see. I kinda want to wait for subframe connectors atleast. I want to get 11.4's and get kicked out

AS far as intake goes, i've ordered a battery relocation kit and soon as i get that installed i'll work to make an intake setup that should flow abit more than the TPI airlid box

yep i'm 1/2 Irocz now, louver was completely peeled off at 116 mph It was crazy. That thing went 50ft in the air

Re: My 383 HSR first shakedown passes--VID INSIDE

It all depends on the track, I went 11.48 and all they did was give me a second glance. I bought a Wolfe 5 pt. for when they do start getting on me. I'm surprised they've neevr checked my helmet - it's S95 rated. There have been two more certs since then to my knowledge. I still need to get a jacket & a 5 pt. harness too. Then they shouldn't have anything else to bust me on.

Yeah, mine is an S95... IIRC - there's been an S98 and an S2000 since then. I bought that helmet back when I was in HS over 10 years ago. I'll keep rocking it until they tell me I can't anymore.

I'm going to get new stuff that's up to date for the belts and jacket though. No sense messing around with that, the helmet I can't see going bad or spoiling like produce.

Well done.
Love the launch. Looks like a little daylight under the front tires!?
Life is full of surprises. Some of them are really cool like 11's out of the box!
What did you eventually end up with for an exhaust? I never saw a follow up after your muffler swap.
And you're right (as is 1989GTATransAm) in that the TPI air lid is a restriction. It's less than 3" at more than one point and it wouldn't flow nearly enough cfm for your application.
I still like 1bad91Z customized air box.

I don't know either. But I would hazzard a guess at 75 or 100 more horsepower.
