Everyone with a cowl hood please look!

Last pass I made with my car the hood seemed like it was going to fly off after about 80mph. The front is latched and works fine. The problem is the back of the hood where it meets the hinges. If I pull up on the ears it comes up about 6 inches very freely. It happens to both sides identicly. At first i determined that the hinges went bad but both sides??? I want to run on saturday but I don't feel like this is safe. I know it's not going to come off but it's scary when its shuttering very violently. Any thoughts? does your hoods rise from the body 6 inches???

Re: Everyone with a cowl hood please look!

I almost crapped the first time I noticed that too, but have been going 130+mph for at least a couple years with it like that. I think it comes up 1"-1.5" if I remember right, as I'm usually watching where I'm driving at those speeds.

I am with fast82Z on this one. I have the 4 inch outlaw and I have ran it on the street and track both for 4-5 years with no problems. Been a whole lot faster then 130 in it to with no problems. Although it does move around a bit.

Re: Everyone with a cowl hood please look!

I'm guessing this is why a lot of people at the track do away with the hinges and have hood pins all the way around?
Very interesting that it goes 6 inches at a, somewhat low speed of 80 mph.

Don't think I've ever noticed the hood moving around at any speed. Running a Harwood 3 inch bolt on and so far have had it to 126 mph.

So basically don't worry about it. As long as your hood is latched in the front properly you shouldnt have any problems.

if its moving THAT much i'd be worried about the hood actually breaking and try to figure out a way to make it stay put

My old harwood with the stock hood latch would peel up at the head lights I could look thru the cowl and see the head lights.

Re: Everyone with a cowl hood please look!

IT shutters very badley. When I say 80 I mean like 100mph and up. IT's all you can here in the car is a loud shuttering. I am not worried about it comming up I am worried about it breaking totaly off. If I walk up to the car and lift the corner the hood stays secure to the hinge but the arm of the hinge rises up and will come up about 4 to 5 inches. Maybe less but its enough for me to see the whole corner hinge clearly.

So you guys are going down the track with the back part of your hoods shuttering and it's not bothering you? The car's not that fast but at 122-123 an accident will ruin my day for sure. There has to be some kind of fix?

You should add pins in the back on both sides. My old Glasstech did the same thing...over 130 mph

Re: Everyone with a cowl hood please look!

I replaced the hood struts and the problems is gone. When I was pulling up on the hood it was pulling the tension from the struts and allowing the hinge arm to extend. They were both shot.

One wheel peel....Have any more pics? I dont know if mine is a stock color. I was told it wasn't but I would love to hear that is is so I can get more of it.

Re: Everyone with a cowl hood please look!

I had an aftermarket cowl on for a bit, it did raise about 3" if you tugged on it and over 80-90 mph it would shudder a good bit too. I ended up selling it and plan on buying a full pin-on for my piece of mind :/

Plus pin-on looks more sporty imo.

I am thinking about getting a cervinis cowl bolt on hood. Will I have any problems with this going down the track without hood pins?

Have a GoodMark 4" all steel, never had a problem like that, been over 145 more than once... If my hood was jumping or moving at all at high speeds I would worry, that's not right...

I have seen a couple that resembled this color but I remember you telling me something like mid 90's GM. Do you remeber where this color came from because I really need touch up paint and the can you gave me melted in the back of my truck .

i belive it was available on the cutlass/le sabres/regals maybe even the achieva. Some body shops can use the light gun to get a close match. I know the shop i use has a gun like that, they just used it to match my formula.
