New Best for the Camaro Friday Night

Friday was the "Club Clash" series, mufflers & DOT tires required. The track is often not very good at this event (the groove gets torn up by the highway tires), but they prepped it very well this time.

We had really "good" air for us, DA went down to 7300' (5800' physical elevation - DA usually in the 8500-9000' range). I figured when my first TT pass was one of the quickest the car had run with me (it's always a little quicker for my son because he's about 40 lbs lighter than me), it would get even quicker if I went rounds.

It did go rounds, made it to the 6th round (quarter finals) when I dialed quicker than we ever had, 14.15, and even taking 2 mph off broke out by .002. Had the better light, too. Just didn't back off enough because I knew the other car was going to out MPH me.

60' times were down as low as 2.02. I usually have 2.08 or 2.09. Not that it slips, it was just feeling good Friday night.

This coming weekend it'll be in Topeka for the NHRA Div 5 Summit ET Finals. First time I've run it at a low elevation track. I'll be running it in Pro ET, where you need to run a 9.00 to 13.99, so it shouldn't have any trouble running 13.2's or 13.3's. I hope to drive the low-9 sec cars bonkers. . .

Re: New Best for the Camaro Friday Night

7300' Wow, that is good air for you. that's like here, last Friday night, the air started at 4600 and by the time the sun set, it was down to 3900 which for me is fantastic air. Typical race day is around 5000' and bad air is over 6000'. Track's official altitude is around 3400'

So many people don't realize how much altitude and density altitude affect performance. I always tell people that if someone says they have a 12 second street car in Florida, I say big deal but if they have a 12 second street car in Denver, that's a fast car.

Heartland Park has an official altitude of 1000'. I think bad air for them would be around 2-3000' and I doubt it will be that bad this late in the season. You'll need to really jet up to keep the engine from running lean. The engine is going to sound so clean and crisp in that dense air.

The Camaro has a CC q-jet. It hasn't seemed to have any problems on the primaries when I've had the car at lower elevation (just on the street). The secondary air valve acts as a mass air flow sensor, so it'll just open the air valves more with the denser air. The rods will be rich enough.

The '57 is a different story. I'll need to jet it up.
