I have been running 12.70's pretty consistantly with flow tech shorty headers and y-pipe and single 3" flowmaster cat back w/o a cat. A friend told me I could pick up half a second or better going to a good pair of long tubes and 3" duals and bullets. My question is could that really get me 12.0's Current set up is 450 h.p. 383, turbo 400 3500 tci stall, 9" with 4.11's 60'-1.70, 330'-5.21, 1/8-8.11,84 mph, 1000-10.63, 1/4-12.79 @102.9 mph. have had a few 12.60' on cold nights. you could get a set of dyno don's shorty headers and run a bit quicker, but a 1/2 second over shorties with long tubes is a little far fetched. I run shorties with my 383 and I make 395 hp and 407 torque at the wheels and run 11.72 in the 1/4.

I do not think long tubes will make that much difference.
If you are running 102 mph I do not think you are making anywhere near 450 hp. However, 12.7@102 means you are making great torque.

Any info on your setup?
Just your average set up, seems to nose over @ 1000' shifting @ 5800 rpm. tried shifting @ 6000 rpm... lost .15 sec. I think it would rev better and more power at the big end with better exhaust? I think I' running plenty of fuel pump, mech. holley 110 gph.

I'd hate to say it, but your friend is wrong. By running 3 inch duals you will actually decrease flow. An efficient exhaust system has a common length throughout the whole system. When you run larger than needed piping through your exhaust system, you will lose overall pressure, and that will cause a loss in heat, which will therefore make the gasses flow slower.
Basically what I'm saying is, you run bigger pipes, you have too little backpressure for your application, the exhaust gasses cool, and it is common knowledge that colder gasses will flow slower. Running an adequate exhaust size will help you.
The absolute best setup you could run would be any brand of steel Long Tubes you prefer. About them 3 inch duals though, that is non-sense. You will see FAR higher gains from running a 2.5 inch X pipe into dual Dynomax Bullets.

I have to agree with the one response, if you're only trapping at 102 you're not making anywhere near 450hp unless you're at some wacky elevation. Hell I trap higher than that and I'm not making anywhere close to that power.

thank you for the response but, most people at the track I run at say the reason my car won't mile per hour what it should is because of my exhaust. What do you think?
Invest in some dyno tuning, possibly your timing is off. Timing makes an extreme difference in how an engine will run. Flowmaster, Dynomax, Magnaflow, Borla, they will all see similar gains, similar setups between the companies will at most probably see a 5 horsepower difference.
I'm positive that with a 2.5 inch X pipe setup, dynomax bullets, longtubes, and a decent tune, you will gain that 5 tenths of a second, or at least pretty close to it.
What tires are you running? Investing in some DOT approved drag radials will give you a decent gain incase you're spinning a tad at launch. I've been told that Mickey Thompson drag radials will last a whole summer of dragging, or up to 5,000 miles of cruising. Don't quote me on that though, it could be false.

thats kind of the direction I was wanting to go, thanks for the input,I'm already running mickey drag radials, had bfg drag radials before. they took twice the burn out to stick, love the mickeys! my head bounces off my t-top on the launch with mickey's. Any thoughts on what I would run with the exhaust you mentioned and 125 shot? Thanks.
I'm not an expert when it comes to nitrous, I know the basics. I'm not sure if a 125 shot would mess with your timing, but you may want to invest in an MSD timing controller just incase, you may plan to go with a bigger shot in the future. It will come in handy with a 200+ shot.
Plus.. You wouldn't have to spend time on the dyno frequently with a timing controller. Exhaust/nitrous wise there's not really anything else you'd need to run. Ignition is the place to focus on when you're running nitrous though.

at one point just bolting on a set of tires.
from a 26" tall ET Drags to 28" tall ET Streets i picked up 3to4 MPH.
what all do you have in your car. 3600lbs is that with you also?
28in. tall drag radial and yes 3600 with me in it, I have a six point bar no back seat, took out everything not needed behind the dash, and took off all the fire wall A/C and heater core stuff.
I'm lacking a little in camshaft, but will certainly be switching to true duals. My cam is 236/240 @ .050" anf .501/.510 comp solid flat tappet.

I'm from Reinbeck, run @ cedar falls alot. I don't think I'm ready for 90/10's yet. A guy recomended front limiters because I picking up the left front wheel about 4-6 inches off the ground and I need to stop the twist before the weight transfers back. He said would help reaction time and 60's quite a bit. Also I think most of my performance problem is that nobody removed the electric pump from the tank. I wondered why I couldn't get a solid fuel pressure readings and severe inconsistant E.T.s I bought the car with it already switched to a carb, but the a$$ that put the motor together didn't know crap. That leads me to believe the lazy a$$ didn't drop the tank to remove the pump. Probably why it falls on it's face at the 1/8th, I think it's starving for fuel by then. I hope this is it because I need to get this figured out so I can spry it. I don't think it would last long leaning out that bad!
wanna buy a aluminum fuel cell that takes 1 -10 an fitting and -8 return with vent tube. It fits in the rear hatch
I don't think right now is a good time for that. Will be laid off in a couple of weeks, the year is about over @ PCI. Planned on exhaust and front limiters for my iroc this winter. I am converting my 69 camaro to disc brakes this winter too, thats pretty much my budget for this winter. Look me up next summer I may come look at it though, ive always wanted one of those.
I'm trying to raise like 2 grand this winter to do my floors, cut the wheel wells and finish the cage. I also need to get a FAST air fuel meter so I don't lean the engine out into a very expensive pile of metal. I have old parts I sell all the time I can't find a buyer for the fuel injection I got, and well the fuel cell I'm selling is a specially made one out of aluminum designed to fit in the rear hatch. Lol now if I could only find a buyer for the radio out of my 84.

I am really interested in the cell, I need some picks though. I have my tank out right now and some one converted it already. The pickup tube was cut straight and I think it was flat against the bottom of the tank. I ground it at an angle , but if your cell is good I may just go that route. Does it have a lid like the ones on ed quay, to keep it from the drivers compartment?
I will try it's fricken snowing hardcore outside. Both my jobs have been flooded with people getting cars fixed and getting new tires. That combined with people plowing curbs and monsterous snow falls. I guess I can go try to take a pic now...

I think I am going with long tubes and true duals with an x pipe into bullets 2.5 in. My current headers, y pipe, and three in. catback will be for sale, I think it would work great on a more stock car. I only had it on the car for a year and it really sounds good.
