What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
I guess it's finally time to start the thread and ask the question, what are your goals for this racing season? Near the end of the year it will change to "and your failures"
I suppose my goal is the same as last year since I didn't reach it. I'm still after that 8 second time slip at altitude. That's providing our track gets the new lease and is even open in 2010. If not then I need to travel to a different track and the other regional tracks are about 1000' lower in elevation which makes it a little easier.

re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
I managed to get into the 12's last year which was my objective at the start of the season. ( sea level mind you)
This year will be to decommision the 86 IROC ( too much body work needed ) and transfer all the good bits to the very clean 87 Coupe I picked up almost 2 years ago.
What I would like is to drive a car that I'm not embarrased to take to the local cruise nights.
Maybe a few tenths quicker too.

My goal is and has been to put together an 11sec pump gas autocrossing, roadcoursing drag car. Last year I missed my goal of an 11sec timeslip and went from a previous best of 12.6 to a 12.3 with traction problems. (posi clutchs went south) My goal will again be for a wheels up 11 sec multi purpose street legal pump gas car that will be scary fast on an autocross track.
re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
Gotta sort out my issues with the turbo car. Needs new converter, and fix some oil leaks. Work the tune, and hopefully shoot for low 9's. Wont be getting out much this year
re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
Fixing to order in the line lock and ratchet shifter. Plan to spray the poor little 305, hopefully making it into the low 8's in the 1/8th mile.

hopefully get the berli out after 2 years of body work and other misc work, and then just spray the hell out of my little 305 in the iroc, looking for low 8s in the eighth with that one.

First goal:Learn how to shift a 4-speed properly.
Second goal: get my car to run high 9s in the 1/8 mile.
went out twice last year, best time was a 10.48 at 70mph
re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
realistically...get the new motor in the car and tuned...drive it a bit, and enjoy the car. as far as performance goes, i'd like to see some 10.8's n/a...but realistically, if the car goes 11.3's or better i'll be super happy.
i'm doing a 4th gen dash swap right now, and i've decided to do away with every bit of wiring that i don't need, as well as re-route the harness in the engine bay...it's proving to be extremely tideous, so i hope that i can just put the car back together right now.

re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
I agree with the above posts. Goals should be something that's obtainable. I'd like a goal of having a full tube chassis car but I know that's not going to happen any time soon plus it's not really race related. Trying for that 8 second timeslip is something to shoot for but unless I can make more HP, I doubt I'll get it since the car runs consistent in the 9.3's - 9.4's. It is still an obtainable goal no matter what I need to do to get it. Cam swap, NOS etc could do it for me.
Wanting to do some exotic engine or driveline swap or wanting to do some major fabrication project isn't the same as preparing and expecting to get it done. Remember, this is the racing forum so they should be racing goals.
Trying for a ET or MPH goal is possible. I understand the "not breaking anything" goal as I was at that point a few years ago and if you regularly race, that can be challenging. Even a goal to win one race or even the season championship is possible. I'm not sure what kind of goals an autocross racer can set. Just to win events I guess.
re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
Would love to run a 11.50 or quicker. Not to far off from my 11.72 best last year. I have a aluminum radiator, fiberglass hood and a bigger cutout. Hopefully that may be enough, but probably won't be

re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
First goal is to get the car out more than once this year. Would like to chase for points.
Performance wise is some mid 11's, hopefully with a little more gear, intake and some tuning time I can get there. If not, a new set of heads will be on the way.
With any luck, when I reread this in 11 months I can say that I accomplished what I want for the year.
re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
well we need to lose about 400lbs....only realistic way is to sell the car which I am working on...need to be 2200 or less, looking at running 5.0 in the 1/8, the bump spot in our class has been getting lower and lower, need to run 5.90 or quicker to make the show in a 16 car field, last time out we ran 5.60 and was the #16 qualifier....so hope it sells..Rob
re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
I also would like to add that I want to eliminate some weight off the car but I dont think it will happen. In fact, i'll end up adding MORE weight just because i need to go to a real rear end, time to ditch the 10 bolt stocker for a 12 bolt or 9" and thats heavier unless i get an expensive fabbed 9" or something.
Then I need to go to a full 10 pt from my 8pt... tubing size is 1 3/4" when it could have been 1 5/8" all over in the first place if i just would have went 10pt instead of 8....
Sigh... just added a dual 3" exhaust system and ditched the single 4" which I think is lighter overall.
Being a street car I dont want to ditch the carpet since its only like 25lbs anyway but I'm tempted to cut it out and cover the floor in black truck bed coating to make it looks like it has a floor
re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
Keep my 'IronMan' streak alive. I was one of only three drivers in '09 to earn points in each race. Started 41 races since I started in 2008 (3-4 races per race weekend).
So far I've had a few 5th place finishes and only one 4th place (avg ~10 cars). My other goal for 2010 is to get on that podium this year.
Last goal is to beat my buddy of mine (Burro here on TGO), who started racing last year, in season points

you'll love the dash, and the wiring will be worth it in the end.

no doubt. I'm upgrading to stick with the OL632 class for this season, as 10.5 has just gotten too far out of hand for me $ wise. We're hoping to finish up the blower combo this year, but if I push it harder than mid-high 4's in the 1/8 it will just eat more parts than I can afford to put in it. Since it takes a low 4 to be competitive in 10.5 anywhere remotely close to me, I just can't justify it, even though I would much rather run the blower than the n2o.
My goal is a bottom 5 in the 1/8 for the 496/single carb combo; it should be capable of a 5.1x once we get a handle on the tune-up. I went a 5.51 a couple weekends ago in the 1/8, clicked the n2o off and ran on through the 1/4 to a 8.73. If the tune-up was clean I would have left the nitrous on to see what it would do, although 99% of what I run is 1/8 mile. - I'm currently looking for a Mark IV low deck 502 block to build a 530+ CI combo to bolt the t-ram and twin dominators on top off, along with a 2nd stage of da juice.

I would if i was still in the area...i'll be in Houston this year for sure and possibly the rest of my life haha, i guess its up to me and this economy if my job keeps me down south.
re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
Well last spring I knocked the bearings out of the 406sbc. That combo went good for what it was. I got mid 9's at 142 with a 175 shotat 3300lbs. The cam wouldn't let me add anymore spray. The car ran same time with .063 jet as a .102. Since I had to pull the engine out I had the engine bay painted and firewall smoothed. A buddy did that for me. I also had the axel shortened one inch for a mini tub job. I spent many hours researching 700-850hp sbc's and realized one they were expensive and two that they run on the edge with that power level. So I found a fresh 555 BBC and decided that it makes more power and was cheaper. So after fitting the car with a front and mid-plate, I ordered up some Ed Quay headers 2 1/4 stepped to 2 3/8's.
The rear of the car needed attention and is in the process of getting 40 spline axels with a pro geared aluminum center section. I sold the th-400 and am getting a sfi cased Powerglide and purchased a Neal Chance bolt together converter.
The car is at home and is in the assembly process. My ETA should be two months to get the car going. I would expect 9.50's on motor and sub 8's on a 300 shot. I have both a plate and a pro-fogger on the engine. The car should scale in at roughly 3400 with me in it. I have both radials and Et Streets for the car and it will be run through the exhaust.
EDIT: also added a 6 inch cowl and removed the stripes.
re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
Goal 1: Get the car back on all four tires.....has been on jack stands since the day I bought it, getting gutted and decked out in a full cage, 4-link and various parafanailia.(90% done)
Goal 2: Get the 421 on the engine stand and finish it and maybe, just maybe install it...
re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
well, when it is a heads up index type of deal, it don't matter how much you spend as you're limited at an et you can't go under...which is pretty cool. i'd like to run some 7.00 or 6.50 headsup stuff (1/8mile)

re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
It's still bracket racing the same as Super class racing. 8.90, 9.90, 10.90 index racing. You adjust the car to run as close to the index as possible without running quicker. You need more power than required in case the air gets bad and you use throttle stops to slow the car down to the index. I run 9.3's at 144 MPH. When you see a SuperGas car running a 9.90 index at 160 mph, you know he has a lot more HP than is required to run that index. A car like that would be on the stop for 3-4 seconds to slow it down enough to make the index.
Watching 2 cars go down the track in a heads up race and both running the same index ET gets boring real fast. It's still a bracket race but instead of changing the number on your windows as the car's performance changes over the day, you adjust the car to speed up or slow down to make the index.
I have the opportunity to run in SuperGas/SuperRod but index racing needs a lot more attention to the weather for adjustments than I want to do.

.
Thats the way I feel about bracket racing. I feel like Index racing is more competitive and the adreniline factor is there over bracket racing. IT's more exciting to see a car go too fast or screw up the run. Even know it's the same thing in bracket I feel like index racing is a true drag race. Two car heads up is a race. They both have the same goal. ex... 10.0 or bust!
What is the 10.90 index.....Super street? or super stock? What is required for that?

10.90 is Super Street. It uses a .500 full tree. Super Gas/Comp use a .400 pro tree.
Super Stock is a modified version of Stock Eliminator. More changes are allowed to the cars.
All the index classes are also corrected for altitude. The SuperGas 9.90 index is corrected to 10.24 here in Calgary. I think SuperStreet is 11.27.
Quote:

And they can still break out and lose. Most spectators don't understand throttle stop racing. A car launches then suddenly it bogs off the line for a few seconds, picks up and powers it's way down the track. Spectators think a car missed a shift or something without realizing 60' time means nothing to a Super class car.
re: What are your goals for the 2010 racing season? and your failures...
generally speaking, throttle stops are not allowed in most street car style index racing, and unlike a stock eliminator class where the AA guys will run the M guys. a 10.00 headsup class is just that, ONLY 10.00 cars run in it, on a .400 pro tree.
