Re: rear end gearing for auto cross

Thats tough without knowing your entire setup, 406 + 5 speed dosnt tell me much.

What are you running for wheels tires? If that 406 is built even mildly or equipped with TPI then even super sized tread would be hard pressed to put any power down with 4:xx gears.

What have you done for suspension?

Re: rear end gearing for auto cross

thanks for responding. im running 15in wheels with slicks 255 45 i think. wonder bar, strut tower brace, poly bushings, boxed lca and pan hard, custom traction bar..dont remember what size the rear sway bar is but i think its 3/4in and the front is 1in. the problem im having is coming out of the corner, just dont seem to get a good launch.

with the 3:42 gears in it now it will do 150 mph. the fastest i need to go is 100 maybe 110 at most

Re: rear end gearing for auto cross

i'm guessing 2nd gear takes you to that 100mph then???

if so, leave it. switching to a stupidly radical gear like that will only slow you down. the less time you spend shifting, the faster you get.

it sounds more like you're having problems hooking up coming out of a corner. with a 406 and 255's out back, that doesn't really surprise me. get some wider tires, they will help dearly.

also, what slicks are you running???

Re: rear end gearing for auto cross

on one hill climb i get up just over 100 mph in 4th gear...and its only one long striaght. on another hill climb the engine is screaming for 4th gear right at the finnish. im running kumo 710s all the way around. planing on running 10" wide rim on the back this year with the widest tire i can get. do you think that would cause push in the corners? thanks for the help

also found out the gearing is not 3:42 its 3:23 so im thinking maybe 3:55 gears ..any thought?

Re: rear end gearing for auto cross

a 3.55 will be just fine.

general rule of thumb with tires though, the fronts and rears should never be more than 20mm difference in width. so if you run a 345 out back, you want at minimum a 325 out front.

you said this is for autocross? If so check your class rules. You may not be able to run a non-stock gear ratio and remain in the rules. Also, boxed lower control arms are TERRIBLE for performance handling. They don't allow the rear axle to rotate in the car and get in a bind causing a snap loose condition. You need stock arms, or tubular ones with heim joints at the ends. www.hotpart.com also has a great selection of lower control arms. I'm running them and they are great.

from my friend Russ Wiles. he's only got two SCCA National Championships under his belt lol. i've found that what he told me is correct though. my first two years were on staggered tires: 235's front, 255's rear. this year i switched over to 245's all around, and the car seems to be better balanced.

Re: rear end gearing for auto cross

i do run some auto cross but when i say hill climb most pepole think im talking about somthing other then a paved road course. guess ill change the lca's back to stock for this year and see how it works out. what about the traction bar (from the rear end to the tranny) how much movement does that need? right now i have almost none. thanks for the help.
