Re: my cp class autox car

Had another race yesterday. Set the fastest raw time overall even with wet pavement by 1.6 seconds. Car was great but needs more spring rate in front. Unfortunately i coned on that run but even with the penalty it was enough for 9th overall on index so i was happy.

Awesome! I as well would like to build an CP car. Looks like too much fun! I just need a universal car though, if I had a car for everything I want to do, I would have 6

Re: my cp class autox car

Well just had the last autocross of the season here in st.Louis. after some body work to make new rear fender flares we have all the tire rubbing issues out of the way for the most part. Car did fantastic now that it was finally dry out to use the new tires grip for once. Won the cp class which was my goal but also set fastest time of day with a 40.1 and was sitting #1 in the overall index until the third heat went out. Unfortunately for me there is some really fast sts cars here and it pushed me down to third overall, still by far the best the car and I have done this year. Ill post some new pics of the fender flares and hopefully video of the race as soon as I get time

Re: my cp class autox car

Well its been a long time since I've posted anything. Took the winter off and was lazy and did absolutely nothing to the car. Now that its warm out its time to get back to building the car up some more.

We have ordered new suspension parts. Gone will be the bilstein shocks and in come the new koni's . We have decided to run 950 lbs. Springs in the front instead of the 700's and 175 lbs. Instead of 250's in the rear.

I said I would post some pics last fall of the car in action and never did. I will do it soon. I have an excellent one that was taken at the last event of the season and if I can figure out how to post it I will.

Re: my cp class autox car

1 more update. We weighed the car and unfortunately from all the removal of extra weight we are now to light. 2920 lbs. So we will have to add back in some in the frame. Oh well at least we get to put the weight were we want it.

Re: my cp class autox car

Next up is possible switching to a custom 4 link suspension. We might also need to remove some inner fender well. Been itching to step up to 27x14 rear tires and now that we got some take offs from another car we need to make them work. Another step we are wanting to take is putting a full fiberglass hood on it. When I was removing the underside support from the stock hood I got a little over zealous and removed to much. Hood is to dang flimsy to almost even open now (lesson learned).

Re: my cp class autox car

I responded to your PM as well. 4 links just don't seem to work in an autocross car. All of the serious competitors in CP are running 3 links and most that I have seen pictures of are useing a torque absorber style upper link. I was never nationally competitive but thats what I ran.
Lots of good pictures of various cars here http://cp.carlc.com/modules/myalbum/viewcat.php?cid=24 including some that are showing the rear suspension. I believe the best pictures are in 2007. You can also sign up for the CP email list, Most of the guys are very helpfull but there are a few that are somewhat jerks.

Well we finally stepped up to 27x14 Hoosier tires in the rear. Had to have it mini tubbed to accommodate them without rubbing though. Here are some pics. I cut the first side out and took it to a fab guy who did the rest for a mere 500 bucks. I think it was well worth every penny.

I'm building a C Prepared Camaro for SCCA autocrossing too. Your car looks good. How does the rear spoiler feel compared to without one?

Re: my cp class autox car

So its been a long long winter of upgrades...First we had to build a new 355 for our car as the old one lost oil pressure and when we pulled it apart the main bearings looked like a dog chewed on them.

So we took the parts up to the local engine builder and discovered that the block was cracked in 3 spots also. Lots and lots of money and time later we have a brand new 355 completely balanced with aluminum heads and custom ground cam. Still waiting to get it on the dyno later this week.

We are also going from 4.10 gears to 3.23 so that we can run 1st and 2nd instead of 2nd and 3rd on the autox courses.

Our hurst shifter was giving us fits so a brand new competition plus hurst shifter has been installed along with an ACT 6 puck clutch and pressure plate.

We were quite light when we weighed the car towards the end of the season last year so we have been adding weight to the rear end too. Still trying to get that all figured out as there is limited areas to put it but its a work in progress none the less.

I am almost done with our new custom hood cowl mounting to stock t/a hood too. Had to put one on it to clear an air cleaner.

Ill post pictures of all this as soon as my phone hurries up and emails it to me.

Re: my cp class autox car

Some updates. Car is now on 1440 lbs front springs and 250 lbs springs rear. We did this as they repaved part of the local parking lot and it is so smooth now that going really stiff should be ok. Also put a new Quickfuel 750 carb on which gave us a bump in power to 328 hp and 387 tq at the rear wheel on dyno. Still short on power but we may have our heads done and see what that gains us. We will be upgrading to larger brakes in the front this off season which should help smooth things out too. Ill post some new pics and a few videos of the car running.

Re: my cp class autox car

Yes we are definitely going to upgrade to the watts link at some point. Haven't really done much with the car in about a year. We did just go to the first race of the year and car performed excellent even on the 1 1/2 year old slicks that sat on concrete garage floor even through the winter (woops). Still haven't done the front brake upgrade either but it is on the list.

Anyways, talk to Jim Fay, at Fay's2. .. really easy to work with and knowledgeable about suspension setup, he's who I got my watts link from.

Re: my cp class autox car

Time for an update. After a long long time we decided to finally get moving on the brake upgrade. This should make a drastic improvement in the car. So far we have almost everything done. We did have 1 issue with a hub that we had cut down. When we tried to install the new arp 12mx1.5 wheel studs into it. For some reason it kept splitting the outer portion from the stud hole out. Seemed like the arp studs where just slightly to big and put to much pressure on the holes.

So we learned our lesson with the first hub and used some old studs we had laying aroung for the second hub. Unfortunately this means having another hub cut down.

All in all I would say this project is not difficult by any means....just time consuming.

Here are some pics

before installing hubs

hubs installed

and finished product

Will post another update after we run this thing. There is a race this weekend and fingers crossed will have other hub cut and back on car so we can see how it does.

So how did these brakes work out for you?

Is this the LS1 Big Brake Upgrade?

And some wheel adapters?
