3" duals summit 2 chamber mufflers will put sound clip up soon
Love the way it idles. Engine doesn't shake around as much as my 383 sbc. Surprisingly it is more mild sounding. It's a lil better matched combo than my over cammed 383 lol

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
Hope to have at the track april 4th.
Got to fix the popping out the exhaust at idle and cruising. It is backfiring slightly out the exhaust plugs at charcoal black but not wet with fuel. Tr55 plugs gapped. 040" 33degrees timing. Maybe the carb is way off? Already messed up a set of tr6 plugs to the point it wouldn't start.
Any suggestions

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
turn in the mixture screws for a start. On a cold engine with no choke it shouldn't even run without pumping the throttle for a minute. If it starts up no issue, then it's super rich. Toss a wideband on it or learn to read spark plugs, and you'll go through a lot of them.

I may have a blown power vhalve it back fired through the carb pretty hard when I was trying to start it when my plugs were messed up.
Should I stick with tr6's or go with an autolite racing plug?

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
found my problem. the black dry soot plugs were from the power valve. i guess sometime over the years i removed the power valve to plug it. when i did i double gasketed the power valve paper gasket with a rubber one. this allowed fuel to enter intake at idle. threw my tr55 plugs away. threw a set of autolite 5245's gapped at .050" in it (stock heat range), fresh gas, adjusted 4 corner idle screws with a vacumn gauge. set idle at 1000 rpm. was able to get 11" of vacumn at idle. no black smoke at idle. doesnt burn my eyes at all. took it for a spin. holly cow this thing pulls hard up top. pulled plugs after a 20 min cruise and some wot hits. plugs look clean and brand new

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
Track results
Leaving off brake at 3700rpm
Best run was 60'. 1.657 330'. 4.962 1/8. 7.730 Mph. 88.36 1000' 10.112 1/4. 12.153 Mph. 111.80
Shifting between6500-7200 rpm had no effect on mph.
Feels like it doesn't like anything over 7000 rpm. It originally was cutting out at high rpm so I jetted up 4 sizes from 76/84 to 80/88 helped a lil as far as missing out up top but no help in mph or et.
Did a hot compression test
All cylinders 190-200 psi
What gives guys?

that thing is WAY down on power, what is your timing curve like? you running 93 exclusively? come on up here and i'll take a look at it
I'd start with TR6 plugs gapped at .035 and take a look over that 60' too, that's horrible.

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
Wasn't really concerned about 60' times. Its a given I can get them back into low 1.50's for sure. I was really just concerned about the mph. I think it should be at least 10mphI quicker in 1/8 and 1/4. 111mph is a bolt on ls1 car lol
Yes 93 octane.

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
what did plugs look like after a single pass?
how was fuel pressure going down the track? what's the fuel setup as well?
what air pressure in the slicks? drag radials?

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
I need to upload the pics of the plugs.
Fuel set up.
hole drilled in bottom of stock tank. Bulkhead fitting to a 90* barbed fitting to 3/8 fuel hose to holley black to inline filter to stock tpi fuel line under car. I have a holley regulator with guage on it mounted on drivers inner wheel well. No return. 8psi at idle. I have no way to check it going down the track. Was plenty to feed my old 383 with same carb.
13psi in tires only checked them one time was more worried about mph than 60foot.

Amazing engine build!! I see you live down by Indy, where do you get your N20 Bottle filled? I live up north and can't find a single place to fill it.

too much pressure. 6.5lbs at most. you're pushing beyond what the float will properly regulate. the guys at quickfuel explained this to me though don't ask me to explain it, lol! all i know, is i had 8psi, turned it down to 6.5psi and picked up a bunch of mph, like 4 or better if i recall (it was before i was logging stuff so strictly)

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
well if timing is locked, then i'd imagine you're running out of fuel pump and it's going lean on you. You running 10 gauge wire direct to battery for the MSD setup? Also stupid question but you have the proper amount of trans fluid in the trans too right? I've seen cars be 1 quart low and down on mph as well, then add a quart and pick up several mph

no wideband i'm guessing, i'd definitely get a better hold on that a/f ratio before running it again. If your ignition is "fine" like you say but it felt like it was missing, could be lean. Not to mention you should have started at 28 degrees of timing and slowly added it, based off mph and the plugs. Having tons of timing, and lean are just asking for trouble.

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
if i can also second a couple things that steve said:
-start at 28* timing. i think the ls3 type cylinder heads like less timing than cathedral stuff, don't touch it till you get the carb right...lean and lots of timing with your compression will make for a very expensive paperweight
-take it to 6200 or so at first
-6.5psi of fuel pressure
-keep adding jet size in 2 size increments (2 front, 2 back) till it slows down, then go back one step, then bring more timing in in 2* increments
-once you get the carb and timing setup working right, start adding 250rpm's to your shift point.
-make sure you are checking tire pressure every pass, it's a good habit to get into
-write down EVERYTHING!!! make sure you record things like DA and weather conditions too.
tuning systematically like this is the only way to see real progress.

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
may have found a big part of whats wrong. I AM NOT GETTING WOT WHEN PEDEL IS ON THE FLOOR!!!!!! didnt have linkage adjusted right
secondaries are about 1/8 of the way open.
that would explain weak 60ftlow mph, and not pulling up top?

lol, get it right and back to the track! Keep my systematic check list though. Don't blow this thing up
Also, I don't like your throttle bracket...looks really flimsy and like it'd get in the way of the primary accelerator pump arm. I know you made it, and that's cool, but I don't think its beefy enough

I did some adjustments to the bracket since I made it. I didn't like how close it was to the accel pump either
Next time I can get to track is the 15th!!!!

haha i didn't mention check throttle opening because you made your own throttle bracket and I didn't want to sound like a dick if I asked if you checked that very important part of a custom bracket

91_B4C_RS,
You may want to think about going to a bigger fuel line. I started having fuel starvation issues with the stock fuel line once I got into the mid to low 11sec range.

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
i second that also. my 305 was having fuel volume problems into the mid 12 second range. went from 12.6x to 12.4x range when i replaced the mechanical pump and factory 3/8" line with an aeromotive s/s pump and -8 line. go ahead and do a -10 to the pump and -10 to the regulator now so it's setup for future mods.

1.531 60' 6.991 @98mph 10.97 @ 124mph Off transbrake 30 degrees timing shifting at 7200 rpm.
Need to lower instant center. Front end goes up imediately. Feels like it needs more forward push than going up.
Currently have lower control arms at lowest position on rear end and higest setting on front torque arm.
Need to lower instant center. Front end goes up imediately. Feels like it needs more forward push than going up.

how did the plugs look? Now you have a chance to jet up for max mph and do the same for timing in 2 degree increments.

Re: Project 10sec lq4 91rs
did not mess with timing left it at 30* all day left off the transbrake at 4500 rpm all day. never plugged laptop in.
the only thing i changed was tire pressures (12.5psi worked best) and shift points. ( 6500-7200) it liked 7200 the best so far. got the most mph out of it. didnt try to spin it any harder.
plugs look ok but i eally need a wide band setup
